To all 'zo/1.0m t may concern.'
Be it known that I, THoMAs LUMSDEN, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Gatesheadfon-Tyne, in the county of Durham, England, have. invented new and useful lmprovements in (ii'inding-ll/lachines, of which the following is a. specification. f
his invention relates to grinding Vmachines, and has for its object to provide an improved construction of vgrinding machine adapted for use in grinding gages and form tools.
A grinding machine in accordance with this invention comprises abcd, parallel guide rods carried thereby, a swinging arm pivotally mounted on one of said guide rods, a grinding wheel and a pointer carried by said swinging arm, means for adjusting said pointer, means for rotating said grinding wheel, means 'for laterally adjusting said swinging arm, a work table carrying both the blank to be ground and a former or pattern, said work' table being'mounted on another of said guide rods, means for angularly adjusting said worlr table, means for giving a hue lateral adjustment thereto, and la spring for returning the swinging arm. In some cases a pointer having a reversed point may be used.
The accompanying drawings illustrate one construction of grinding machine embody,- ing my invention. In Athe drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation; and
Figs. 2 and 3 are elevations looking on the right and lel't hand sides respectively' on F ig. 1. f l
Fig. 4 is a part side elevation ofthe lower end ot' the swinging `arm and the guide rod on which it ismounted;
5 is apart plan ofthe work table; and
Fig. 6 is an end elevation of the-lower end of the swinging arm and the guide rod on 'which it is mounted. Y
F ig. 7 is an elevation .of a. modified form of t le pointer hereinafter referred to; Y
Fig. 8 is a section of a grinding wheel used gages; and l Fig. 9 is a section of a grinding wheel used for grinding form tools.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 6.oi the drawings,l the grinding machine therein illustratedcomprises a bed 10 which carries in ibearings three parallel guide rods, 11, 12, 13 and a countershaft 14. The guide rod 11 is arranged to be moved lengthwise by means of Specification. of Letters Patent.
Patented sito 1a isti. serial no. 361,220.
the handwheel 15 onl a shaft 62 on which is also mounted Athe pinion 16 which engages with an internally toothed wheel shaft 18, which is also provided with a pin` ion 19 engaging a rack 2O on the underside of the guide rod 11. Mounted on the1 guide rod 11 1s a swinging arm 21 which "is prevented f-rom moving along the guide rod `bv two collars 22, 23 (Fig. 4)
guide Iod 11. The swinging arm`21 carries a shaft 24 whereon is mounted theorinding a pointer `26 and an operating'flever 27. 28
to which is ivoted a pin 29 carrying' a spring 30, said pin passingthrough a lug l31 on the collar 23clamped to the 11. The springBO bears againstthe `lug 31 and its tension can' be adjusted by means of the wing nut 32 on the end of the pin29 which is threaded.l i The springBO returns the arm` 21 tonormal position .v after-it has been swung forward by theoperating lever 27. The swinging arm` 21 is'also'provided with a lug 33 (Fig. 6) with'a set screw 34 which co-acts with a fiXod lug 35 on the guide rod backward swing of the arm- 21.
The pointer 26 is carried by a holder 36 mounted on a plate 37 attached to the swinging arm 21 by boltsSS which pass through slots 39 and allow of vertical adjustmentv and by bolts 40`which pass through slots 41 andl allow of angularadjustment. j On the countershaft 14 'is mounted along pulley 42. The shaft 24 is, provided with apulley 43 (F ig.f1) whichis adapted tobe driven by the pulley 42 through the belt 144. The counter-shaft v 14 is provided with fast and loose pnlleys`45, .46 whereby itis adapted 17 on a clamped to theV guide rod which isjprovided h 11. The set screw 34" iorms an adjustable/stop 'for limiting the` to be driven `from a convenient source of rotary power. l l
The guide rod12'vcarri'es a table 47 pro vided" with slots 48 for receiving the' usual bolts lfor holding the worlr and the `former or pattern. The work table 473is lcapableoi fangular adjustment about the guide rod 12 and- 1s clamped in position after adjustment by a lockingA nut 49 4provided with ahandle 5l)v mounted on a screwed part of theguide rod 13, said nut engagingfa lugl'on the'table 47` having a curved Slot 52 lwhich embraces the;
the grinding wheel, which is swung forward and heldup to the work by lthe lever 27 against tlieresistance of the sprlngBO, en-
pointer 26m-acting with the former insuresl that'tlie wheel cuts the shape,T the wheel and pointer laterally by" the` hand wheel blank to 'the desired being moved 15,1thel blank being thus ground .to the` shape `or" the former. Y Y j WVhen it isdesired to grind' a snap gage,
the gage is first-roughly Y above described, using a grinding wheeler and theguide rod 1l is then locked byni'eansl of the clampingleverY 60' (Figs. 'lfandf 3) and the work .table 47 moved: laterallyby the worin adjustment operated'jby the graduated handwheel 59 to grind Vthe gage to the enact finished size. f Y Y j In somecases I maylsubstitute a pointer having a reversed end 61 as shown in/Fig. 'i'
so that thegrinding wheel mayproduce the converse of theV former.
