PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD E. PHVKERTON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FOLDING BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 28, 1921.
Application filed August 8, 1917. Serial No. 185,063.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD E. PINKER- TON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes, of which the following is a specification. 1
My invention relates-to improvements in folding boxes, and has for its object the provision of an improved construction of this character, which is simple and eflicient in use, and especially adapted for use as a The invention consists inthe combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the box spread out in flat form,
Fig. 2, a perspective view of the box made up and'closed,
Fig. 3, a longitudinal section of the box, and
Fig. 4, an enlarged transverse section of the box.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises an ordinary folding box made up of a bottom 5, side walls 6 andend walls 7, provided with tongues 8 adapted to enter slits 9 in the side walls and thus form the ordinary form of folding box body. Top members 10 and 11 are formed at the upper edges of the side members 6 and of a width adapted to cover the top of the-box, then top member 11 being provided with sllts 12 at its free edge adapted to receive the edges ofthe top member 10 as indicated in Fig. 2. The ends of top member 10 are provided with tongues 13 adapted to enter slits 14 provided in tile end walls 7 ,to hold the cover in closedrelation. Flaps 15, are provided on the ends of cover member 11 and are adapted to be inserted within the box, resting on the bottom thereof, and serve to reinforce and stiffen the top member 11.
Thile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my in vention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A folding box comprising a bottom; foldable side and end walls therefor; top members at the upper edges of said side walls, each of said top members being of a size to extend slightly over half way across the top of the box and overlap at their free edges, there being slits opening at thefree edge of the innermost of said top members, adapted to receive the free edge of the uppermost of said top members; interlocking tongues at the edges of said end walls, there being slits in said side walls adapted to receive said tongues; tongues at the opposite ends of the outermost of said top members, there being slits in the end walls adapted to receive -said tongues; flaps at the ends of the innermost of said top members, adapted and arranged to be inserted within the box and contact with the bottom thereof to support said top members, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence (if two subscribing witnesses. I EDWARD E. PINKERTON.
Witnesses:
