Description

F. S. BALDWIN. Lumber Measures.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK S. BALDWIN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVENIENT IN LUMBER-MEASURES.
-Speoifioation forming Part of Letters Patent N0. 138,310, datec'l April 29, 1873; application filed November 16,1872.
T0 all whom it mag; concern:
Be it known that: I, FRANK S. BALDWIN, of St. Louis, in the eounty of St. Louis und. Stute of Missouri, have invehted a. new and Improved line w 00 of Fig'. 2. Fig. 4 is a. detail.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A rep1esents a. small eiroular sheet-metal case, with a reel, B, inside of it 011 the axis O, with a tape-measure, D, coiled 011 its face, a ooiled. spring, E, upon one side for winding up the tapemeasure, and a. disk, F, on the other side for transmittiug its motion 130 re'- cording-dials, when the tape is pulled out und stretohed along the piece to be measured. This disk has ratehet-teeth in the periphery, and is engaged by a spring-pawl, G, on the Whirl B, which runs back 011 the disk when the spring winds up the tape, a.nd engages and turns it when the tape is pulled out. H representsa cone of differentia.l gea.rs attaohed to this disk for transmitting the motion to the reoordingdials, of which there are in this example four sets, I, in whioh a is for the units, b the tens, und. so on. These dials are arranged immedia.tely under the platze of the ca-se, as shown ab L in Fig. 1, through whioh there is a hole, M, for tl1e inspeetion of euch, und they are geared together by a. train of wheels, N and. N, with pins und teeth arranged in the ordinary way for aotuating recording trains. The wheel N is oonneoted with any one of the wheels of the cone H by the 1011 g pinion 0 and the short one P, the latter being mounted loosely on the inner end of a. strong shaft, Q, projeoting into ehe case from a. short tobe, R, whioh has a disk, S, on its inner end, just in side of the plate of the case, and extends Outside through the curved slot T into another tobe, U, having a disk, V, 011 its inner encl against the plate of the disk, and a. thumbpiece, W, ab the outer end by which to turn it; and it is connected. by a pin, x, with the tobe R, so as to turn it, and this tube R has aslot, Y, in whioh a. pin, Z, of the shaft Q projects, so that seid. shaft is ca.used to slide out and in endwise loy the turning of the tube U to bring the piuion P into the plane of any one of the wheels of the 00110 H, am]. the shaft Q asses through a. radius-loar, e, whieh is pivoted on the axis of wheel O, so that in swinging the pinion P toward. und. from the axis of the oone H, as required, for gearing with the wheels of different sizes, Which is done by shifting ehe tubes R U and. the shaft Q a.long the slot T, the seid. pinion will be kept: in gea.r with the long pinion O, whiohtransmits the motion of the reeording-train. These differential wheels a.re gradu-ated to aetuate the recording-train correotly for several diflerent lengthsof lumloer-say the smallest one will beof the right size for turnin g the reoordingdials so a-s 110 indicate correctly ehe measure of lumber of te11 feet in length, the next one similarly for twelve-feet lumber, and so on. Ab the same time tha.t the pinion P am]. its sha.ft are shift-ed from one of tl1e oone-wheels to another it must be seeured also in oonnection with ehe seid wheels, so as not 150 slip out of gear, for which the disk V is provided with .as many angle-slots f g h, &o., as there are wheels in the cone H, 110 engage With a. stand pin, k, rising up from the case, whioh slots are graduated, in respect of their radial depth, 120 the differeut: wheels, and they are also zu. ranged eiroumferentially relatively 130 the spiral slot in the tube R, so tha.t when any notoh is engaged. with the pin k, as shown a1; f, the pinion will not only be adjusted to the plane of the wheel of the oone for whioh the noteh is adjusted, bul: it will also be brought into gear with the sa.id wheel. II: is, therefore,
only neoessary 1:0 turn the thumb-pieoe W,-
and shift it in the slot T properly for engaging any partioular slot With tl1e pin for ohanging the conneotion 0f ohe train of reeordingdisksfor setting the maohine for the length of the lumber to be measured. The wheel N will be adjusted to tl1e required osition for beginning the work loy the disk F when 1bhe tape is wound up, but the other wheels of Il7ll6 reoordingtrains will loe a.djusted by a key applied through holes in the sido platze of the ease to the axles 0f ehe wheels, as represent'ed at l, Fig. l. The wheelsof the recording-train areprevente. from turning, except when required, by springs m.
T0 change the transmiting-gears 0 P from one recording-train 150 another, they eure arranged. 011 a disk, n, Whi0h turns within the other portion of the top plate of the case on the axis 0 to swing them around from one set to another; and in order 130 pr6vent the trains from being disturbed 01 changed when this shifting takes place, by the unit wheels i being turned by the pinion O, either when passing 0ut 0f 01 into gear with them, a levercatch, p, is provided for each train f0r being thr0wn into gear with the whee1 N by a tappet, q, on the disk S, .and he1d in gear with it by the disk n, as long as the notch 1' in ehe edge does not coincide with the end 0f the 1ever, whieh is always the oase when the transmitting-gears are not in eonnection with the recording-train t0 which the lever belongs; but when they are so a spring, t, throws the lever int0 the notch r, disengaging the wheel N, and locking tl1e disk n. The train being thus held by the1ever p, the wheels 0 P Will turn sufficiently f01 engaging or disengaging with the whee1 N.
The shafts 0f the recording-train are journaled ab one end in a ring, A, arranged in fr0 nt of the diskF for their upport, and ab the other end they are journa-led in the plate 0f the case. The ring will be supported 011 rods or posts of any kind projecting from the same plate in whioh the ax1es of t-be trai-nsare supported.
Havingt' thus deseribed my invenoion, I clain1 as new and desire t0 secure by Letters Patentl. Two 01 more trains 0f a registeringinstrument in one mzwhine, with gears for counecting them with the tapemeasure real, ar ranged 1:0 shift the connectiou from one reeording-train 1:0 the other, substantially in the manner described.
2. The combinat-ion of the differential cone H, pinionl, shafl: Q, tubes R and U, radial plate e, and pini0n O, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, With the disk n and recording-trains I, of the stop-lever p and the tappet q 0n the disk S, substantially as specified.
4. The combination 0f the disk V with graduated slots, as described, with the shifting devices for the pinion P, and a stop-pin, K, substantially as speci fied.
Witnesses: FRANK S. BALDWIN.
