JOSEPH Z. WAGNER AND HENRY B. FRY, OF WABASH, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LATHES FOR TURNING HUBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.138,303, dated April 29, 1873; application filul October 7, 1872.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that we, JOSEPH Z. WAGNER and HENRY B. FRY, of Wabash, in the county of Wabash and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lathes for Turning Hubs; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement, with a machine or device for turning hubs, of horizontal and eccentric or perpendicular rests in which the mandrel is securely held. It also consists in the construction and arrangement of the chisel-head so as to give the same an oscillating or hand-cut pivot motion, all of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing which forms a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a transverse vertical section, of our machine.
We construct an iron frame or bed with suitable ways turned upon the. same. Upon these ways rests a frame or bench, A, having the side planed and movable on the ways sidewise for convenience. On the side pieces of the bench A are placed horizontal rests B B, which are-connected by a downward-projectin g frame, G, provided with ribs to a fitting in horizontal grooves on the inner sides of the side pieces of the bench A. 'The front ends of the horizontal rests B B are forked, forming jaws b b, which extend over the mandrel d. D represents the chisel-head, which is pivoted at both ends in the horizontal rests B B,
and is on its rear side in the center provided with an arm, 0, extending back to a connect in g-lever, f, and this lever is fastened to a cross-piece, E, connecting the two side pieces of the bench A. The journals of the chiselhead D are extended out beyond the horizontal rests B B to receive the eccentric rests G G, which are formed with eccentric or perpen dicular jaws h h to extend past and over the mandrel d. The lathe-head, mandrel, and hub are the same as commonly used and worked in the customary manner known to turners, except that the power is reversed so as to throw the chips from the operator.
After the hub is placed in position the chiselhead and rests are brought forward to the face of the block until the proper size is obtained.
The peculiar manner in which the chisel comes up in our machine, is the same as used by all wood-turners, when holding the chisel by the hand, and is effected by pivoting the .chisel-head and by connecting it in the manner shown and described with the bench A.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The movable rests B B, provided with jaws which receive and embrace the mandrel, for the purpose set forth.
2. The chisel-head, connected and used in combination with the eccentric rests G G, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the pivoted chiselhead D, arm 6, pivoted lever f, and cross-piece E, all as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The combination of the chisel-head with the rests B B and G G, in such manner that the rests close upon the mandrel when the chisel begins to cut and hold said mandrel securely in position, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 21st day of September, 1872. h J. Z. WAGNER.
HENRY R. FRY. Witnesses:
