Description

C. KRAFT.
ASH RECEIVING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 12. 1920.
1 3% L8& Patented June M, 1921.
AR EF INVENTOR a ATTORNEY UNITED STATES CARL KRAFT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ASH-RECEIVING DEVICE.
Application filed February 12, 1920.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL KRAFT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Ash- Receiving Device, set forth in the following specification.
My invention relates to the receptacle used for cigar, cigarette or pipe tobacco ashes. Observation shows that the ordinary receptacle serves only to hold the ashes and makes no provision for eliminating the annoyance of smoke from the unburned tobacco in said receptacle. An object of my invention is to accomplish this by suitably designing the ash receiving device.
The details of my invention will be better understood by reference to the illustrative embodiment described in the following specification in connection with the accompanying illustrative drawings in which like ligures represent like parts.
Figure 1 shows a front elevation of one preferred design of the ash receiving device.
Fig. 2 shows a plan view of the ash re ceiving device.
Fig. 3 shows a full sectional elevation of the ash receiving device taken through the axis XX.
In Fig. l, A represents the base and B the body of the receptacle. A container C is provided to retain the matches D. This may be so designed as to hold the different shapes of commercial matches, or match boxes. The body B contains the wells H, I, J, separated by the partition G. A semicircular cover E, provided with handles F, is hinged about the axis K.
In Fig. 2 the well I is shown uncovered, while the well H is completely covered by the cover E. The well J is only partially covered. Assume ashes deposited into well I. The cover E may be turned over to completely cover the well 1, thereby shutting oil the supply of oxygen and hence extinguishing any fire that may exist. Simultaneously the well H is exposed for use. Either well l[ or H is exposed for use at any time. The well J is always partially exposed and is Specification of Letters Patent.

provided to contain water, or a pad saturated with water so that a lighted cigar or cigarette may be dipped into it, the light being extinguished before being deposited into either well I or well H, depending upon which is exposed.
In Fig. 3 is shown a full sectional elevation, the cover E being over the well H.
It must be understood that many different designs embodying these principles might be involved. The one described is but one type.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and what I desire United States Letters Patent for is:
1. In an ash receiving device, a well, so
situated and divided into compartments that a cover, suitably hinged, may be made to cover one compartment completely at any one time, thereby providing a means to cut off oxygen supply to the covered compartment and hence extinguish any combustion in said covered compartment, at the same time leaving the other uncovered compartment or compartments in a condition ready to receive the ashes. 2. In an ash receiving device, a well, so situated and divided into compartments that a cover, suitably hinged, may be made to cover one compartment completely at any one time, thereby providing a means to cut oil oxygen supply to the covered compartment and hence extinguish any combustion in said covered compartment, at the same time leaving the other uncovered compartment or compartments in a condition ready to receive the ashes; in which ash receiver is provided an additional auxiliary compartment or well to contain water or a water saturated pad, said auxiliary compartment never to be covered completely regardless of the position of the cover.
In witness whereof I hereunto subscribe my name this 9th day of February 1920.
CARL KRAFT.
