UNITED STATES THOMAS LUCIEN TALIAFERRO, OF CHICAGO,
JARcLosunE.
Application filed July 8, 1920. Serial No.
To all whom it magl concern:
'Be it known that I, THOMAS L. TALIA- rnnuo, a citizen of the United States, re-
useful Improvements in Jar-Closures, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the figures of reference marked 10 th ereon. The invention relates to new and useful improvements in jar closures, and more particularly to a jar closure having spaced lugs formed thereon adapted to engage screw ds or lugs on the jar for securing the closure to the jar.
An object of the invention is to provide a closure of the above character wherein the lower edge of theflange of the closure is strengthened by infolding or bending the metal and wherein the locking lugs or projections for securing the closure to the jar horizontally indenting inwardly the strengthened lower edge so as to provide vertically extending looking lugs or projections.
1 showing the In the drawings which show by way of illustration one embodiment of the invention- Figure 1 is a side View bod ing my improvements;

completed closure and the line 55 of a closure em- Fig. 5 is a similar view on of Fig. 1.
My improved closure for jars is made of metal and consists of a top portion 1 having a depending flange 2. his flange is rolled or bent inwardly as indicated at 3. The rolled or curled portion 3 is formed in the first operation, made more or less open, and in the second operation is reduced to smaller proportions and the raw edge of the metal concealed between the vertical portion of the flange and the part of the flange which is turned in. The flange is then subjected to further operations which produce the curved outwardly projecting portion 4 which is provided with knurls. This curved projecting portion lies between the upper and lower Specification of Letters Patent.

lower edge, thus 1,129,150, wherein the metal 4 disposed between having a depending made without departing from the spirit of i the invention as set ters-Patent, is-- 1. A jar closure comprising a top/portion having a depending flange with an outwardly projecting knurled curved portion disposed between the upper and lower edges of the flange, said flange being rolled inwardly and flattened toconceal the raw edge of the metal and strengthen the lower ends of the flange, said flange within the limits of the strengthened inturned edge being provided with spaced lugs formed by horizontally indenting the strengthened edge.
2. A jar closure comprising a top portion flange formed with an outwardly projecting knurled curved portion of the flange,,said, flange being rolled inwardly and flattened to conceal the raw edge of the metaland strengthen the lower said flange within the desire to secure by Lethavinga depending the upper and lower edges hold the closure on limits of the ing horizontally lugs with the metal forming adapted 'to hold the closure m place ..on the jar extending in a direction substantially parallel with the flange.
3. A jar closure comprising a top portion flange, said flange being rolled inwardly and flattened to strengthen the lower edg'e' of the flangie, said flange within the limits of the strengthened inturned edge being horizontally indented to provide spaced holdi g lugs. v
4. A jar closure co prising a top portion having a depending fl ge, said flange being rolled inwardly and flattened to stren then the lower edge of the flange, said ange within the limits of the strengthened int irned edge being horizontally indented to provide spaced holding lugs, with the metal forming the portion of the lug adapted to the jar direction substantially parallel with the flange.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
