vary the space between the feed roller and the heated iron, to accommodate Work of different thicknesses; widening this space,
.of course, facilitating insertion and permitting the withdrawal of the work Without necessitating its being passed completely through the machine. It is desirable, however, that the force, such as spring tension, holding the iron against the work, should remain active throughout the variations of the feeding space, and that both hands of the operator be left available for handling the work. It is also occasionally desirable to stop the rotation of the feed roll while the iron is held momentarily away from the feed roll, and at other times to permit this separation to take place while the feed roll continues to revolve.
An object of my invention is to provide means whereby the results above mentioned may be conveniently and practically attained. Another object is the arrangement of foot controlled means for separating the feed roll and heating iron, with provision of additional apparatus, which may be set, when desired, either to cause the foot controlled separating movement to disconnect the roll from its driving means, or to .permit the drive toremain uninterrupted. A further object is the provision of an eflicient safety device whereby if an operators fingers or sleeve should be caughtbetween the roll and iron these two members will become separated and preventserious injury to the operator.
These and other objects will become apparent as the description proceeds. A preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and the essential characteristics are summarized in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sec tion through my improved mangle showing parts in end elevation; Fig. 2 is a plan of the same; Fig. 3 is a front elevation, parts being in section; Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the driving mechanism, the housing therefor being removed; and Fig. 5 is a detail showing parts in different position from that illustrated in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings by numerals,
10 designates the work table of a power driven mangle, supported by a frame 11 resting on a bench or support 12 The usual felt covered feed roll is shown at 15 fixed on a shaft 16, mounted in bearings 17 on the frame 11, while the numeral 18 designates a heating iron mounted adjacent to the roll 15. A pipe leading to burners (not shown) for heating the iron 18, is shown at 80 in Figs. land 5. The shaft 16 is shown extending through one end of the frame 11 into a housing 20 secured thereto, in which its end has a bearing as at 21. Carried loosely on the shaft 16 and releasably connected therewith by a clutch mechanism hereinafter described, is a worm gear 23 in driven engagement with a worm 25, on a drive shaft 22, mounted in a sleeve 24, rigidly secured to the frame 11 as by a bracket 26. The shaft 22 extends rearwardly of the machine and is driven by any suitable power mechanism (not shown).
The iron 18 is preferably held against the roll 15 under the tension of springs 30 having their upper ends connected as at 31 to the iron and their lower ends embracing blocks 32 constituting rock arms mounted on a rock shaft 33. Adjusting screws 35 may be provided to pass through lugs 34 secured to the iron 18 to vary the tension of the springs 30.
A rock shaft 40 is mounted below the iron 18 in bearings 41 in the "frame 11, and has cams 43 secured thereto adjacent to each of the springs 30, adapted to engage the springs. To rock the shaft 40 an arm is secured as at 45, having a link 46 pivoted thereto and to a foot board or pedal 48.- Depression of the pedal by the foot of the operator will rotate the shaft 40 and cause the cams 43 to bear against the springs 30 and force them and the iron 18 away from the feed roll 15 to an extent depending upon the pressure exerted on the pedal.
The shaft 40 projects through the bearing 41 into the housing 20 and has secured thereto a rock arm 50 constituting part of a" clutch release mechanism whereby the shaft 16 and worm gear 23 may be disconnected.
This clutch mechanism comprises a peripherally grooved collar 55 splined as at 58'tois normally closed under the influence ofa spring 68 surrounding the shaft. Loosely embracing the peripheral groove is a yoke 59, which is inturn embraced by and pivotally connected to the upper bifurcated arm 60 of a bell crank pivoted at 62 to the lower end of a hand lever 65.
The other arm 66 of the bell crank extendsparallel with the rock shaft 40,. and when theghand lever 65 is in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 4 is adapted. to be engaged by the rock arm 50. Depression of the pedal .48 actuatestherefore the cams 43, and also tilts the arm 50 upwardly, thereby swinging the bell crank arm 66 upwardly and the bifurcated arm 60 inwardly toward the roll 15, thereby causing the collar 55 to be moved along the shaft 16 against the tension of the spring 68, thereby breaking the clutch connection at 56 with the gear 23.
If it is desired to separate the iron 18 and roll 15 by actuation of the cams 43 from the foot pedal 48 without stopping the roll .15 by breaking its clutch connection with the shaft 16 and gear 23 at 56, the hand lever 65 may be swung rearwardly about its pivot'on the shaft 16, thereby oscillating 60 embracing the yoke 59 wlthin the groove of the collar 55, and disengaging the arm 66 of the bell crank from the rock arm 50, as
shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4. The bell crank being thus moved manually when desired, out of the path ofthe rock arm 50 by r turnbuckle having right and left hand threaded links 7 6 connected by a nut 7 7 and the parts are so arrangedl that rearward movement of the bar 70 will rock the shafts 73 and 33 and move the iron 18 away from the roll 15 through rearward movement of the springs 30. If the fingers or sleeve of the operator should become caught between the roll and iron his arm will immediately strike the bar 70 and efi'ect the disengagement of the parts as indicated, and thereby avert possible serious injury.
In operation, the hand lever will be set in either of its two positions according as it is desired or not to disconnect the drive to the roll when the pedal 48 is depressed.
With the lever 65 pushed rearwardly as shown in Figs. '1 and 4, the bell crank arm 66 will be out of the path of therock arm 50,
the bell crank tating feed roll, a driving connection thereand disconnect the worm gear 23 from the shaft 16. Thus, the movement of the roll 15 will be stop ed so long as the pedal is depressed, an as in the preceding instance, the cams 43 will be actuated to separate the iron from the roll an amount depending upon the amount of movement given to the pedal 48. i
In the above manner the iron may be moved away from the roll to facilitate insertion or removal of the pieces to be ironed without releasing the spring tension tending to hold them together, and without necessi- 'tating for this purpose the use of either hand or its removal even temporarily from the work. By asimple setting of a lever this same operation will simultaneously either disconnect the drive to the roll or permit it to continue'uninterruptedly as desired.
7 I claim p 1. In a mangle the combination with a r0- for, an iron pressed'against the roll, manually operable means for separating the iron from the roll, foot operable means connected with the iron and driving connection, whereby a movement of the foot operable means may separate the iron from the roll and disengage the driving connection, and other manually operable means associated with the driving connection and adapted to coiiperate with the foot controlled means, whereby the foot controlled means may be operated to move the iron away from the roll without disengaging the driving connection.

In a mangle,a work-supporting table, a feed roll, a heating iron adjacent to said roll, a rock shaft, leaf springs pivotally mounted on said rock shaft and'adapted to force said irontoward said roll, cams-adapted to engage 'said springs, and means for actuating said cams to cause varyin degrees of separation of said iron and r0 1.

In a mangle, the combination with a driven roll, {and-an iron connecting means between said roll and the driving gear,'foot A controlled means for interrupting the drive to said roll, and hand controlled means acting on said connecting means f r rendering said foot controlled means operative or inoperative.
4.. In a device of the character described,
the combination with a power driven feed roll, a clutch for effecting the interruption,
roll, of a heating iron pressed against the heatin iron, of a feed roll having a member separa ly connecting it with driving means therefor, means comprising a foot'controlled rock shaft, whereby said roll and iron may be separated at will, connecting means between the rock shaft and said member and a manually controlled lever for causing engagement or disengagement of said connecting means with said rock shaft.
6. In a mangle, a rotating feed roll, driving gear therefor, a heating iron adjacent said roll, a clutch connection between said roll and its driving gear, a bell crank in engagement with the clutch, a lever associated with said bell crank, a rock arm for engaging the bell crank to shift the lever for swinging it out of the path of the rock arm.
7. In a mangle having a rotating feed roll and an iron spring pressed thereagainst, a normally closed clutch connection between said roll and its driving gear, means controlled by the foot of the operator for varying the distance between said iron and r0 1, and manually shiftable means whereby in one position said clutch connection may be opened by actuating said foot controlled means.
8. The combination with the feed roll of a mangle and the heating iron therefor, a shaft for said roll, a gear removably connected to said shaft, by clutch mechanism having two positions, manually controlled means for shifting said mechanism into either of its positions, and foot controlled means for engaging said iron and variably spacing it from said roll, and having a part adapted to simultaneously intersect one of said clutch mechanism positions.
9. The combination with the feed roll of a mangle and the heating iron therefor, a shaft for said roll having a clutch connection with a driving gear, manually controlled means in engagement with said clutch, and foot controlled means for variably spacing said roll and iron and simulta neously controlling said clutch to disconnect the drive or leave the same undisturbed depending upon the setting of said manual means.

In a mangle, a feed roll and iron, said feed roll having a shaft, a driving gear on said shaft, a member separably connecting said shaft and gear, means for actuating said member comprising a lever having one arm pivotally connected with said member, a rock shaft having an arm adapted to'extend into the path of said lever, and means for oscillating said rock shaft;
11. In a device of the character described,
a feed roll and a heating iron adjacent thereto, a rotatable shaft carrying a clutch connection between'said shaft and a driving gear, a rock shaft having means thereon adapted to shift said iron from said roll, means for connecting or disconnecting said clutch with said rock shaft and controllable means for oscillating said rock shaft, whereby said iron and roll may be separated a desired amount, and the'drive to said feed roll interrupted or not, aS desired.
12. In a mangle, a frame and feed roll, an iron supported in said frame, said feed roll having a shaft projecting from one side of said frame, a rock shaft extending through said frame, means for oscillating the rock shaft, a driving gear loosely mounted on the feed roll shaft, a collar splined on said shaft and spring pressed toward said gear, a tongue and groove connection between said roller and gear, a bell crank having one arm pivotally connected with said collar, and means for swinging said bell crank about said pivot into or out of engagement with said rock shaft.
13.In a device of the character described, the combination of a work supporting platform, a feed roll adjacent thereto, a movable heating iron, springs tending to hold it tightly against said roll, means on said iron for adjusting the tension of said springs, a rock shaft, cams carried by said shaft adapted to engage said springs, and means for oscillating said rock shaft, whereby said cams may separate the iron from the roll.
14. In a device of the character described, the combination of a work supporting platform, a feed roll adjacent thereto, a heating iron supported from a rock shaft by sprin s tending to hold it tightly against said rol, means on said iron for ad'usting the tension of said springs, asecon rock shaft, cams carried by said last named shaft adapted to engage said springs, and means for oscillating said second rock shaft, whereby said cams will engage said springs and separate the iron from the roll.
15. In a mangle having a work table'and feed roll, a heating iron supported adjacent thereto, springs tendin to press said iron against said roll, a ro extending parallel to and above said roll and iron adapted to be engaged by the arm of the operator in case his fingers become caught between the roll and iron, rock arms connected with said rod, and mechanism connecting the rock arms with said springs, whereby movement of the rod will separate said iron and roll.
16. A mangle having a Work table, a feed roll and a heating iron in approximately the same horizontal plane, springs tending to press said iron against said roll, a bar above said roll adjustably connected with said springs, and adapted to be engaged by the arm of the operator in case hlS fingers become caught between the iron and the roll, whereby said iron and said roll will be instantly separated.
17.
