Description

P. SOLAINI.
LOCK. APPLlcATlN FILED vJUNEa. |920. 1,380, 1 1 6. Y Patented May 31, 1921.
l E ZZ 'rEDj sjrATEs PETER soi-.Amr oF ASTORIA, NEW YORK.
LOCK.
Application led June 8, 1920.
To all whom `z5 may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER SoLAiNI, a subject of the King of Italy', residing at As* toria, Long Island, New York, have invented a new and useful Lock, of which the following is a specification. Y
My invention relates in general to a lock, and particularly'to a lock which cannot be picked by inserting an instrument between the door and the jamb.
It is an object of my invention to provide a lock which may be used on either sliding or swinging doors.
It is another object of my invention to provide a lock which cannot be readily picked. s
Other objects and advantages will appear as the specification proceeds.
In the preferred form of my invention7 I provide a casing adapted to be secured to one door member and a keeper adapted to be secured to the other door member in position to be engaged by the dead bolt ofthe lock. Within the casing is pivotally mountedl a substantially arcuate dead bolt which passes through apertures in the edge of the casing, and through correspondingly situated apertures in the keeper. Means are provided in the casing for locking or securing the dead bolt in either the locked or unlocked position.
In the drawings which show merely a preferred form of my invention,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my lock and keeper, parts being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view4 on Vthe plane of the line.r 2-2 of Fig. 1, and showing the lock and keeper applied -to door members.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of parts of my lock.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detail of the inner end of the dead bolt.
In said, drawings, 5 indicates the lock casing. i 6 is a keeper casing. Within the keeper casing there is mounted an abutment 7 about which the dead bolt is adapted to pass for locking the door members together. Suitable apertures 8-8 are provided in the edge of the keeper casing through which the dead bolt from the lock casing may pass.
Passing through an aperture 9 in the lock casing there is a knob spindle 10. The dead bolt 11 having an aperture therethrough fits over the knob spindle 10. Projecting from the spindle there is a pin 12, and in the dead Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 31, 192i.
Serial No. 387,313.
bolt is a recess 13 which passes over the pin 12 and provides a lost motion connection between the spindle and dea-d bolt.
Means are provided for locking lthe dead bolt in one or more positions. Mounted upon or integral with the dead bolt is an angular boss 14 for a purpose to be hereinafter described. Within the casing 5 there is provided a pair of guides 15-15, and slidably secured between these guides is a locking plate 16. A recess 17 preferably of the same general shape as the boss 14 is provided in the locking plate. Springs 18 are provided for urging the locking plate in the direction of the boss 14. Mounted upon the spindle 10 is a cam member 19. Thiscam member cooperates with a pin or follower 20 provided on the locking plate, and the cam is so able lock 22. This cylinder lock has a pin 23 projecting from the back end thereof. Upon the pin 23 is a lug 24 for cooperation with the lug 21. It will be seen that the pin 23 and spindle 10 thus have a lost motion connection with each other.
The operation of my device is as follows 5 The parts being in the full line positions shown in Figs. 1 an-d 2, the dead bolt will be engaged with the keeper and the two door members locked together. The angular aperture 17 in the locking plate will be engaged with the angular boss 14 on the dead bolt, and since the locking plate is nonrotatably mounted in the casing, the deadbolt cannot be moved without first disengaging the' locking plate and boss. If the cam member 19 be rotated in a counter- 14 before the dead bolt is moved. Upon fur-y ther rotation of the cam in a counter-clockwise'direction, the pin 20 will ride upon the portion 25 on the cam, and the dead bolt lio be moved by the springs 18 into engagement Y with the boss 14, and the locking bolt will t-hus be locked-in the dotted line or unlocked position.
The spindle 10 may be rotated by means of the knob 26 on one side of the door or by Y means of the pin 23 of the cylinder lock from the other side of the door. It should be noted that a lost motion connection between the pin 23 and spindle 10 is desirable for the reason that when a key is inserted into the cylinder lock 22 in one position, the key cannot ordinarily be withdrawn when it is in another position. spindle 10 may be turned by a key in the cylinder lock, and thekey afterward turned back to its original position and'withdrawn without affecting the position of the spindle 10 and consequently of the dead bolt.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a lock which cannot be readily picked. It will also be seen that the lock may be used to lock either sliding or swinging doors;
While I have described one specific em-l bodiment of my invention in great detail, I wish it to be understood that various modilications in the embodiment thereof may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as defined in the claims.
I claim: y
1. In a lock, a casing having an aperture, a knob spindle extending through said aperture into said casing, a pivoted dead bolt having a lost motion connection with `said spindle, an angular boss on said dead bolt, a recessed locking plate for coperation with said boss and guidedin said casing, a cam member mounted on said spindle and cooperating with said locking plate for moving the latter out of engagement with said boss and resilient means for urging said plate into engagement with said boss.
2. In a lock,` a casing having a vknob spindle extending thereinto, a dead bolt mounted on said spindle and operable thereby, means for locking said dead bolt in either the locked or the unlocked position, and means operable by said spindle for unlocking said irst' mentioned means to permit the dead bolt to be moved.l
3. In a device of the character described,
a lock' casingmounted upon one side of a4 Therefore, the
locked position, a cylinder lock mounted upon said door member upon the side opposite said casing, a lost motion connection between said spindle and said cylinder lock, and means carried by said spindle and operable upon rotation of the latter for unlocking said first mentioned means to permit said dead bolt yto be moved.
4. In a lock, a casing, a rotatable spindle in said casing, a pivoted dead bolt in said casing and having a lost motion connection with said spindle, means for locking said dead bolt in one position, means for releasing said locking means, said spindle having a lost motion connection with and being operable by a key operated cylinder lock.
v5. In a lock, .a easing, a spindle in said casing, a dead bolt mounted on and having a lost motion connection with saidspindle, coperating locking. means between said casing and dead bolt for holding the latter in` one position, and means carried by said spindle for releasing said coperating locking means to permit said dead bolt to be moved.
6. In a lock, a casing, a spindleI in said casing, a dead bolt mounted on said spindle, said casing and dead bolt having interlocking parts. for holding said dead bolt in one position land means operable by said spindle for releasing said interlocking parts to permit said dead bolt to be moved.
7. In a lock, a casing, a pivoted dead bolt in said casing, an angular boss on said dead bolt, a locking plate having a recess for cooperation with said boss and guided in said easing for holding the dead bolt in one position, a spindle in said casing for moving said dead bolt and coacting means on said plate and spindle for moving said plate out of engag'ement With said boss to permit said dead bolt to be moved.
8. In a lock, a casing, a spindle in said casing, a dead bolt mounted on said spindle,
interlocking parts mounted on said spindle and said casing for holding said dead bolt in one position, and means operable by said lsaid casing and spindle carrying interlocking parts for holding said dead bolt in one position, and means operable by said spindle for releasing said interlocking parts to permit said dead bolt to be moved. l PETER SOLAINI.
