AUTOMOBILE SIGNAL-SWITCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Iatented May 31, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANsEL C. HULBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a new and useful Automobile Signal-Switch, of which the following is a specification in such full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to construct and use the same.
This invention relates to an automobile signal switch and an object of the invention is to enable the driver to indicate on a certain circuit which way he intends to turn, and to provide him with a pilot light to show that his signal is workmg properly.
A further object of the invention is to enable the driver to signal either a right or left turn or to display a stop signal, as may be desired.
Other objects of the'invention will appear as the description proceeds.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawings in which the same reference numeral is applied to the same portion throughout, but I am aware that there may be modifications thereof.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the switch,
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the switch with the front casing removed, and with one of the lamps removed from its socket,

Fi 4 is a vertical sectional view of the switcih looking at right angles to Fig. 1.
The switch is mounted within a box casing 1, which casing is provided with a cover 2, said cover being secured to the box 1 by means of screws 3 and 4. The box 1 has an insulating bushing 5 at its back, through which the electric wires are passed. The insulated block 6 which supports the switch contact point and lights, is fitted within the casing and is prevented from reaching the bottom of the casing 1 by means of a ring of insulation 7. This block carries two screws 8 and 9, which screws are also connected to two spring contacts 10 and 11 which are adapted to touch the center contact on the base of the electric bulb 12, only one light being shown in place in the socket.
The lamps are of a well known form hav- 1ng lugs on the side and they are held in place by means of a flat plate 13, having a hole therein large enou h to pass the plate of the lamp and this plate has notches l4 and 15 which permit the lugs on the side of the lamp to pass through; and it has raised portions at 16 and 17 to hold the lamps when turned so that the lugs will pass under said raised portions.
The lower ortions of this lamp holding base is exten ed as shown at 19.
At the center of the block 6, there is a screw 20 which supports a slotted spring contact arm 21, said arm having a knob 22 for its operation. The contact arm may be turned either to the right or left and will make a contact with the point 19 on either side; or, by reason of the slot in said arm, it may be mounted vertically to bring it into contact with both of the contacts 19. The front of the case is provided with two raised receptacles 23, 24 within which the lamps extend and which receptacles have a colored glass as indicated at 25, 26 to indicate to the user which light is operated.
The screw which carries the knob 22 passes through a slot 27 which slot has a vertical opening at 28 to enable both of the contacts to be made when that is desired.
What I claim is as follows, but various modifications may be made in the construction shown in the drawings and above particularly described form, within the purview of my invention.
A switch for signals comprising a base having a pair of plates adapted to receive the bases of a pair of lamps. supplementary contacts to complete a circuit, on said lamps, a switch arm adapted to connect either or both of the lamp holding plates with an electric circuit and a cover plate for the switch base having a segmental slot to permit the switch to be moved to one side or the other or to be moved to connect both of the switch points and also having casin with transparent windows to cover both of the lamps.
