FELIGIANO GONZALEZ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DENTAL TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 24:, 1921.
Application filed. March 9, 1921. Serial No. 451,066.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FELIoIANo GONZALEZ, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new Dental Tool, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a dental tool and aims to provide certain new and useful improvements over my prior Patent #1356352, dated October 19, 1920.
Reference is had to the preamble of this specification, and to the advantages derived by means of my appliance, but it has been found, with regard to the structure proposed, that certain difiiculties have been encountered in that it is awkward for an operator to grasp the chuck, and to operate the cap at the same time, with one hand.
With this in view, my present invention aims to provide means which will permit of the operation of a tool of the nature specified, which operation may be eifected by the same hand which grasps the tool, thus permitting the freedom of the second hand of the operator.
A further object of my invention is the construction of a device of the character stated in which any accidental disengagement of the cap from the stem of the chuck will be prevented.
Further objects of my invention will appear in the annexed specification, taken in connection with the drawings, which latter present one practical embodiment of the same, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of a dental tool embodying my improved construction and showing the same associated with the conventional chuck.
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof with the chuck detached, and
Fig. 3 is a front view of the same.
As in my preceding application, the reference numeral 5 indicates the chuck, which is capable of receiving any number of different size drills 6, the drill being detachable in the usual manner from the chuck, and being provided with the conventional operating stem 7 by means of which the drill is driven.
Also, as in my previous application, I employ a cap comprising a cylindrical portion 8, which is conveniently closed as at 9, and is provided with a bore 10 capable of receiving and engaging the operating stem 7 Further it will be noted that in addition to the structure disclosed in my previous patent, that the head portion of the cap has its bore 10 screw threaded or otherwise formed so as to permit of a stem 11 engaging the same, this stem being rotatably supported by a handle 12 of any desirable construction which provides a sleeve 13 adapted to encircle the cap aforedescribed.
Any suitable means may be provided adjacent the outer end of the sleeve for permitting the same engaging th chuck 5, such as for instance set screws 14:, or, as has been indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, the further end of the sleeve 13 may be split and provided with ears 15, which are engaged by a screw 16 to permit of the sleeve being constricted to engage the chuck 5.
Thus it will be noted that the cap is primarily applied, as in my previous patent, to the chuck 5, to permit of the manual operation thereof, subsequent to which the head of the cap is engaged by the stem 11, upon the handle 12 being applied, and the sleeve 13 forming a part of the handle is also caused to grip the chuck 5 by means of either of the set screws 14 or constriction.
It will be noted from the foregoing that the chuck 5 is held immovable with respect to the handle 12, and that a movement other than a rotation by the cap with respect to the chuck and handle, is prevented by means of the stem 11. Thus upon the handle being grasped by the hand of the operator and the finger or thumb being caused to engage the cap through the cutout portion 17 forming a part of the sleeve, it will be seen that a movement of the cap and the drill may be effected.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a structure by means of which any objection incident to the operation of my original dental tool may be avoided in that a simple structure is proposed which will permit of the chuck being firmly held by one hand of the operator, which hand will also be capable of rotating the drill 6 by moving the cap.
Obviously numerous modifications of structure might readily be resorted to Without in the least departing from the spirit of my invention, which I claim as;
1. A dental tool including in combination with a cap adapted to engage the operating stem of a normally mechanically driven chuck, of means adapted to engage said chuck for retaining the Whole in applied position. I a I 2. A dental tool including in combination With a cap adapted to engage the operating stem of a normally mechanically driven chuck, of means adapted to engage said chuck and cap for retaining the Whole in applied position.
3. A dental tool, including a handle, and
means associatedwvith said handle for per mitting of an engagement of a normally mechanically driven chuck.
4. A dental. tool, including a handle, means associated with said handle for permitting of an engagement of the same with a normally mechanically driven chuck, and
means attached to said handle and engaging -sleeve presentingcutout portions, means attached to said sleeve for engaging a normally mechanically driven chuck, and a stem rotatably secured to said handle and engaging a cap having a portion-of its body lying within saidsleeve, said cap engaging the stem of said chuck.
6. A dental tool including a handle, a
sleeve forming a part of said handle, said I sleeve presenting cutout portions and being adapted to receive a normally mechanically driven chuck, a stem rotatably secured to said handle and engaglng a cap attached to said stem, said cap being adapted to lie partially Within said sleeve. and means adjacent the outer end of said sleeve for engaging the body of said chuck. r
'FELIOIANO GONZALEZ.
