Description

W. T. MERRIMAN.
TIE .FASTENER.
v APPLICATION FILED MAR, 15, 1920.
Patented May24, 1921.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE."
TIE-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 15, 1920. Serial No. 366,026.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, VVILLEVE T. MERRI MAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Jackson, county of Jackson, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tie-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tie fasteners, and has for its object the pro vision of an improved construction of this character by means of which a tie may be readily secured in place, and which is of simple construction and efiicient in operation.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1, is a perspective view of a tie fastener embodying the invention,
Fig. 2, a section taken through the tie and illustrating the connection therewith,
and
Fig. 3, a perspective view illustrating the manner of fastening the tie in association with the collar.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a stud in the form of a flat strip of metal 4: having a rounded head 5 at one end and locking teeth 6 at its edges, said stud being arranged and adapted to serve as the ordinary front collar button, as indicated in Fig. 3.
Coiiperating with the stud 4: is a securing member arranged and adapted to be embodied in the tie proper, said securing member consisting of a single strip of sheet metal bent centrally upon itself to form a flexible arch 7, the ends 8 of said strip being brought together over said arch, as shown.- The strip ends 8 are separable along the line 9 when the arch 7 is flexed, and registering slots 10 are formed in the strip ends 8 to receive the stud 4, the arch 7 being slotted to permit passage of said stud 4. The strip 7-8 is secured and embedded in the tie 11, as indicated, suitable stitching 12 being passed through portions of the tie and the securing member.
In use, the stud at is employed as the front collar button, as shown in Fig. 3, and the securing member in the tie 11 is forced over Patented May 24, 1921.
said stud, the teeth 6 engaging the outer ends of the slots 10. When it is desired to remove the tie and the stud, pressure is applied to the ends of the securing member 78, causing flexing of the arch 7 and separation of the ends 8, thus opening the socket formed by the slots 9 and releasing the stud claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A tie fastener comprisin a headed stud; a tie; and a flexible securing member attached to said tie and releasably engaging said stud, said securing member being arranged and adapted to automatically engage said stud and release it by flexing produced by compression of said securing member, substantially as described.
2. A tie fastener comprising a headed stud; a tie; a securing socket attached to said tie and releasably engaging said stud;
and means for expanding said socket to release said stud by compression on the sides thereof, substantially as described.
3. A tie fastener comprising a headed stud in the form of a fiat strip provided at one end with a rounded head, and at the sides with securing teeth; a tie; and a securing member attached to said tie and releasably engaging said stud, said securing member consisting of a strip of sheet metal bent upon itself to form a central arch, the ends of said strip being rebent to form a bridge overlying said arch, there being a slot formed in the adjoining ends of said strip to receive said stud, the ends of said slots releasably engaging the teeth on the sides of said stud, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
