Stops for Graphophones, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in automatic stops for graphophones, and has particular reference to a device adapted to be mounted on the frame of the graphophone in position to be engaged by the tone arm for setting the brake.
A further object of the invention is to provide an adjustable automatic stop device for graphopliones whereby record disks of different diameters may be used, with the stop device adjusted for operation at the desired point adjacent the axis of the disk, the said device also including mechanism to permit a fine adjustment so that records varying in lengths of spiral grooves, as one or two spirals may be accommodated.
With the above objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinaftermore fully described and then claimed.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, and to which reference is had by like numerals indicating corresponding parts throughout the several views,

The invention briefly described embodies a mounting plate to which a horizontal cylinder is attached, and within which cylinder a plunger rod is adapted to be shifted for engagement with the stop lever of the graphophone. An adjustable vertical stand- 'ard is carried by the mounting plate and supports a swinging rodthat is adapted to be moved by the graphophone tone arm, which movement is communicated to the plunger for setting the brake. The vertical standard being adjustably pivotally supported at its lower end, is adapted to be movedlto different positions to cause the operation o f the plunger at different points.
Referring more in detail to the accompanyi'ng drawing, and particularly to Fig. 1, there is illustrated a conventional form of graphophone including the frame 5 having the'disk turn-table 6 rotatably mounted thereon with the tone arm 7 (shown in dotted lines) moving over the turn-table. A stop is provided for the turn-'table and embodies a leve-r 8 pivoted as at 9 beneath the turn-table 6 and having a spring 10 for holding the lever 8 at either sideof its center 0f throw.
The present invention shown in detail in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, includes an angle mounting plate, the base 11 of which is secured to the frame 5 of the graphophone at a point Vadjacent the stop lever 8, the leg 12 extending perpendicularly therefrom. A horizontal cylinder 13 is suitably secured to the inner face of the leg 12 while the inner end thereof is provided with crossed diametrical slots 14 and 15 that extend inwardly from said end. A spring 16 is secured eXteriorly of the cylinder 13 and overlies one side of the slot 14,`and is provided with a substantially S-shaped extension 17 projecting over the slotted end of the cylinder, the spring extension controlling access tothe slots 14 and 15. shown in Fig. 4, a plunger rod 18 works in the cylinder 13 and is provided upon the inner end thereof with a ball 19 positioned inwardly of the S-shaped spring extension As clearly 17, for purposes presently to appear. The
outer end of the plunger 18 is provided with a head 19El that is shouldered as indicated in said figure to limit the inward movement thereof.

With the device constructed as above described, and attached to the upper frame 5 of a graphophone, the tone arm 7 of the graphophone having the sound boX thereof moving over a record is adapted to engage the rod 25 to shift the lower end thereof in the vertical slot 15 of the cylinder 13 for engagement with the plunger rod 18. rllhe head of the plunger normally contacting the stop lever 8 when the lever is in its open position, immediately starts to shift the lever when projected from the cylinder by the movement of the rod 25 until the lever 8 is moved upon its pivot 9 to shift the spring to the opposite side of the center thereof, at which time the lever, under influence of the spring 10 will complete its movement and apply the brake to the turntable 6. In order` to accommodate the device for playing record disks of different diameters, and where the spiral grooves eX- tend to a position nearer the axis of the turn-table 6, the vertical post 20 may be moved upon its screw bearing 22 to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2 so that it will be necessary for the tone arm 7 to move a greater distance toward the center of the turn-table to operate the rod 25 and the plunger 18.
To compensate for a line adjustment of the coperating` parts and to limit a useless throw of the plunger rod 18, there is provided a screw 26 carried by the post 2O and adapted to be adjusted by limiting the swinging movement of the rod 25 and with the consequent control of the plunger rod 18.
W'hat is claimed as new is:
1. An automatic stop device for graphophones comprising in combination with the graphophone tone arm and brake lever, a mounting base Xed to the graphophone frame, a horizontal cylinder fixed to said mounting base, a plunger rod shiftable in said cylinder and in engagement with the graphophone brake lever during rotation of the graphophone turn-table, and means arranged within the path of swinging movement of the tone arm adapted for shifting the plunger rod to set the brake lever.
2. An automatic stop device for graphephones comprising in combination with the graphophone tone arm and brake lever, a mounting base fixed to the graphophone frame, a horizontal cylinder fixed to said mounting base, a plunger rod shiftable in said cylinder and in engagement with the graphophone brake lever during rotation of the graphophone turn-table, a post adjustably` fixed to said mounting base, and means supported on said post and arranged in the path of movement of said tone arm adapted to shift the plunger rod to effect the setting of the brake lever.
3. An automatic stop device for graphophones comprising in combination with the graphophone tone arm and brake lever7` a mounting base fixed to the graphophone frame, a horizontal cylinder Xed to said mounting base, a plunger rod shiftable in said cylinder and in engagement with the graphophone brake lever during rotation of the graphophone turn-table7 a post adjustably fixed to said mounting base, a rod supported on said post and in engagement with said plunger rod adapted to be engaged by the tone arm for shifting the plunger rod to effect the setting' of the brake lever.
4. An automatic stop device for graphophones comprising in combination with the graphophone tone arm and brake lever, a mounting base fixed to the graphophone frame, a horizontal cylinder iixed to said mounting base, a plunger rod shiftable in said cylinder and in engagement with the graphophone brake lever during rotation of the graphophone turn-table, a post ad justably fixed to said mounting base, a rod supported on said post and in engagement with said plungerl rod adapted to be engaged by the tone arm for shifting the plunger rod to effect the setting of the brake lever, and means for retaining -the lower end of the rod operatively positioned relative to said plunger rod.
5. An automatic stop device for graphophones comprising in combination with the graphophone tone arm and brake lever, a mounting base fixed to the graphophone frame, a horizontal cylinder fixed to said mounting base, a plunger rod shiftable in said cylinder and in` engagement with the graphophone brake lever during rotation of the graphophone turn-table, a post adjustably lixed to said mounting base,` a'rod supported on said post and in engagement with said plunger rod adapted to be engaged by the tone arm for shifting the plunger rod to effect the setting of the brake lever, the inner end of said cylinder being slotted for the reception of said rod and a spring carried by said cylinder `for maintaining the lower end of the rod within the cylinder slot.
6. An automatic stop device for graphophones comprising in combination with the graphophone tone arm and brake lever, a mounting base ixed to the graphophone frame, ahorizontal cylinder iiXed to said mounting base, a plunger rod shiftable in said cylinder and in engagement with the graphophone brake lever during rotation of the graphophone turn-table,` a post adjustably fixed to said mounting base, a rod supported on said post and in engagement Withl'said plunger rod adapted to be engaged by the tone arm for shifting the plunger rod to effect the setting of' the brake lever, and means for limiting the swinging movement of saidrod.
7. An automatic stop device for graphepliones comprising in combination with the graphophone tone arm and brake lever, a mounting base fixed to the graphophone frame, a horizontal cylinder fixed to said mounting base, a plunger rod shiftable in said cylinder and in engagement With the graphophone brake lever during rotation of the graphophone turn-table, a post adjustably fixed to said `mounting base, a rod supported on said post and in engagement With said plunger rod adaptedto be engaged by the tone arm for shifting the plunger rod to effect the setting of the brake lever, and means adjustably mounted on said post for limiting ment of said rod.
