SUPPORTZNG-BRACE COVERS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patgnted lfl 17 1921 Application filed January 10, 1921. Serial No. 436,264.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS A. l/ VATTs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supporting- Braces for Covers, of whichthe followmg is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements 1n braces for lids, it being more particularly intended to brace and hold in open position other container showing the lid in open position with my improved brace applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a similar view in enlarged form and partly broken away and shown in section.
Fig. 3 is a view of the inner side of the lower end of the brace showing the releasing finger of the same in the position 1t assumes to permit the brace to be engaged by the holding part on the body.
Fig. 4; is also a view of thelnner side of the brace showing the releasing finger thrown to a position to disengage the brace from the holding part.
Fig. 5 is a top plan view Of the lower part of the brace and the releasing finger.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents one of the end walls of the body of the casket or other structure to which my 1 nvention is applied, and 2 the top or 1rd. The brace is represented at 3 and has 1ts upper end pivoted as at in a su1tably formed elongated recess 2 in the lid. The lower end of the brace rests in a pocket 5 formed in the upper edge of the end wall of the body. The under edge of the brace 3 has, near the lower end thereof, a recess 6 to engage a pin 7 which extends across the pocket 5 near the inner end th ereof for the purpose of holding the top in 1ts raised position.
As the cover is raised, the slotted portion of the brace automatically drops over this pin 7 and in order to release the brace therefrom when it is desired to lower the cover I have devised the following construction: Pivoted to the extreme lower end of the brace as at 8 is a lever 9, one end ofwhich is provided with a laterally-extending lip 10 which overlies the-top edge of the brace; the brace, coincident with the lip, being provided with a recess 11 to'permit the insertion of a finger of the operator beneath the lip to raise the lever 9 for the purpose to be described. The low-er edge of the lever 9 is provided with a beveled surface 12, which, when the lever is raised, engages the pin 7 and cams or lifts the brace away from the pin 7 to release it therefrom, as shown in Fig. d. The extreme lower end of the lever 9 is formed with another angularly-extending face 13, which, when the lever is lifted to the position shown in Fi 4: will temporarily rest upon the pin. o soon as the lid begins to lower, however, this face 13 will ride off of the pin, permitting the brace to drop upon the bottom 5 of the pocket 5 and during the lowering movement of the cover the face 13 will ridealong the bottom 5 holding the lever 9 in the position shown in Fig. 4. Near the limit of the lowering movement of the cover, the lever 9 will contact the over-hanging portion 5 near the outer end of the pocket and return the lever 9 to the position shown in Fig. 3 so as to uncover the recess 6 so that it will be free to again engage the pin 7 upon the next raising movement of the cover.
The extreme outer end of the lever is also provided with a laterally-extending lip 14, which when thelever is raised, engages the end of the brace and forms a stop.
In ordinary practice, one of these braces will be provided at each end of the cover and, by the, construction described, it will be seen thatwhen the operator releases one brace from its corresponding pin, it will" be held in released position while the brace at the opposite end of the structure is being released. This arrangement also provides a very simple arrangement which is ecomical in manufacture and effective for the purpose for which it is intended. I
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a structure of the character de described, the combination, with a body and i into a pocket in the body, the lower end of the brace having a recess, a projection in said pocket to engage said recess, and a cam lever pivoted to the lower end of said brace to engage said projection to lift the brace therefrom.
'2. In a structure of the character de scribed, the combination, with. a body and a cover, of a brace pivotally connected to the cover and having its lower end extended into a pocket in the body, the lower end of said brace having a recess, a projection in said pocket to cooperate with said recess, and a cam lever pivoted to the lower end of said brace to engage said projection to lift the brace therefrom, the end of said cain lever having a lateral projection whichoin the raised position of the cover lies on the upper edge of the brace.
23. In a structure of the character described, the combination, with a body and a cover, of a brace pivotally connected to the cover and having its lower end extended into a pocket in the body, the lower end of the brace having a recess, a projection in said pocket to cooperate with said recess, and a lever pivoted to the lower end of said l scribed, the combination, with a body and a cover, of a brace pivotally connected to the cover and having its lower end extended into a pocket in the body, the lower end of the brace having a recess,-a projection in said pocket to cooperate with said recess, a cam 40 lever pivoted to the lower end of said brace adapted when raised to engage saidprojecticn and lift the brace therefrom, together with means for holding said cam lever in its raised position during the lowering move- I ment of the cover, and a projecting part at the outer end of the pocket to engage said lever to restore it to its former position.
In testimony wherof, I have hereunto set my hand this 4th day of Januar 1921.
