IMPROVEMENT IN DINING-TABLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,?79, dated April 15, 1873; application filed April 7, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ABEL LAND, of Hillsdale, county of Hillsdale, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dining-Tables; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are top views of the same under different arrangement of the leaves;

and Fig. 3 is a bottom or inverted plan, showing the movable parts. Fig. 4 is an edge view of the table when packed for transportation; and Fig. 5 is an elevation of the same, showing the removable legs as packed. Fig. 6 is a view of the movable leaves, showing the dowels and dowel-sockets.

Like letters indicate same parts in all of the figures.

A in the drawing represents the semicircular or fixed parts of the top of the table. a a are removable leaves having one straight and one beveled or angular side, and are onequarter the size of the triangular ordoubleinclined leaves b b.

In Fig. 1 the table is represented as an ordinary straight extensiontable; while in Fig. 2, by the arrangement of the leaves with the wide ends all on one side of the table, a curved or bent table is produced, which is found to be a desirable form in some instances, enabling the mistress to have all persons at the table within the distance of the width of the same. The two forms are produced by having an odd number of leaves, two of which must have one straight side, as a a, and by having the dowels on both sides of one leaf, and recesses or sockets therefor in both sides of the next adjacent one.

To the under side of the fixed partA A are attached flanges B B, made by preference of bent wood, and secured by angle-irons h -h, Fig. 3. The irons h and strap h form sockets for the upper end of the removable-legs F, as seen in the drawing. Gross-plates C extend across and connect the bent webs or flanges B, and serve as attachments for the hinged extension-pieces D. The pieces 0 are arranged far enough from the extremities of the flanges B to allow of the folding of the extensionpieces D .and the cross pieces 0 within said extremities, so that the table may be reduced to a perfect circle, if desired. The cross-pieces O are made to be screwed or firmly secured together, and to form sockets for the middle legs F. The extension-pieces D are made with their adjacent ends beveled so that said pieces cannot be drawn into line with each other. By this means the table can be folded without first bending the joints of the extensionpieces. The cross-pieces G C are secured together and their legs F F secured therein, when the table is set up for use, by means of screws or bolts.

By detaching the parts 0 O and removing the legs and placing them in the space between the flange B and cross-plate G, as seen in Fig. 5, the whole table is reduced to a very small bulk, and is thus adapted for transportation or packing away, as may be desired.

Extending from one plate, 0, through slots in the cross-pieces O C to a windlass, i, is a cord, :20, which, being drawn up by the wind lass, is adapted to tighten or hold the parts A A at any desired distance apart. A pawl, K, operated by the spring j, holds the ratchet on the windlass 2' so as to prevent its turning when the table has been adjusted and the cord as drawn up. M is an adjustable brace or stud to hold the pawl K away from the ratchet-wheel on the windlass; pawl, spring, and stud are all connected with a'suitable box attached to the plate 0 in a full-sized table.

A handle or crank may be attached to the ratchet-wheel for convenience in operating the same, as shown at 2, Fig. 3.

The advantages of this invention. are that a convertible, straight, or curved extensiontable is produced, and the same can be packed in the smallest possible compass, and, by the flexible extension, it can be passed. through narrow doors without turning, and is cheap of constructionas well as easy of adjustment.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The construction and combination of parts herein described, whereby a convertible, straight, and curved extension-table is pro duced, as specified.
