COMBINED WATERPROOF SHEET AND FLASHING RECEPTACLE. APPLICATION FILED IUNE 1?, 1919.
Patented May 10, 1921.
ATTORNEY JOHN 1., HOLDER,
OF COPIAGUE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE BARRETT COMIAN'Y,
A. GQRPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
CGMIBINED WATERPROOF SHEET AND FLASLTING RECEPTACLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 10. 1921.
Application filed June 17, 1919. Serial No. 304,962.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN T. HOLDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Copiague, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Vaterproof Sheet and Flashing Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in damp proofing parapet and fire walls and in providing a look for wall flashings and has for its object the production of a device used in connectiontherewith which shall be cheap to manufacture, easy to install and shall require a minimum for repair and maintenance.
Heretofore difficulty has been experienced through inferior brick or mortar, thereby necessitating the application of a waterproof course. "Considerable expense'is also entailed because a groove must be du into the face of the Wall. into which the e ge of flashing strips are placed and fastened. This invention overcomes these/ objections by preventing water from '"percolati'ng' through the wall and at the same time facilitates the placing of the roof flashing.
The device serves as a combined flashing receptacle and damp proofing course for a wall. The invention will be readily understood from the description and the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective of the device and Fi 2 is a broken away section throu' h a wall in which the device has been insta led.
In the drawings reference character 1 represents a sheet of waterproofing material having a sheet of metal 2 inclosing one ed e thereof as shown. The metal is preferably bent at 3 to form an offset portion as shown. The sheets 1 and 2 form a sheet or device which is designated as a whole by the reference character S.
During the construction of the wall 4,.
,roof flashing 8.
2 leaving an open space 5 between the offset portion of the metal sheet 2 and the course of brick below the sheet. The insertion of the sheet S does not interfere with the construction of the walls as the mortar 6 is applied in an obvious manner between the courses where the sheet is placed. The sheet S is installed a short distance above the roof deck 7 so that the edge of the roof flashing 8 may be introduced into the space 5. After the flashing 8 has been inserted in the s ace 5 the edge 2 of the sheet 2 may be ent downward over the roof flashing 8 as shown in' solid lines.
It is obvious that the sheet 1 may be made of different sorts of materials through which water cannot pass, such as so-called rubber roofing, or other waterproof fabrics or sheets. The sheet 2 may be made of metal or other material that is capable of being bent and of retaining the shape into which it is bent. If water enters the wall above the waterproofing sheet through any defect in or injury to that portion of the Wall it is stopped by the sheet S. The bent over portion of the sheet 2 readily sheds water from the face of the wall 4 over the.
The sheet 2 may be straight instead of being bent at 3 and the space 5 may be lef under the sheet 2 in any convenient way when it is installed. A line may be made some distance from and parallel to the outer edge of the sheet 2 to indicate the distance the sheet 2 should project from the face of the wall. One side of the sheet 2 may be left off with somewhat satisfactory results and other changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as covered by th following claims.
Claims:
1. In a device of the class described. a combined waterproofing course and flashing receptacle comprising a sheet of non-metallic waterproof material having along one edge thereof a strip of metal surrounding its edge and extending inwardly along the sides of said sheet with substantially the en tire area of one side of said strip in contact with said sheet.
2. In a device. of the class described, in combination. a sheet of flexible waterproof material and a strip of metal attached along one edge of said sheet, substantially the entire area of one side of said strip lying in contact with said sheet.
3. In a device of the class described, in combination, a sheet of flexible waterproof material and a strip of metal attached along one edge of said sheet, substantially the en'- tire area of one side of said strip lying in contact with said sheet, a portion of saidsheet and stri being offset from the remainder in a p ane parallel to the plane of the remainder.
4:. In combination, a brick wall, a waterproof sheet between two courses of said wall, said sheet having a metal strip "at tached to one edge thereof extending beyond the face of said wall and said sheet extend- I ing between said courses further than said strip. a
5. In combination, a brick wall, a waterproof sheet between twovcourses of said wall, said sheet having a metal strip attached to one edge thereof extending beyond the face of said wall and leaving a space ithin said wall below said strip.
6. In combination, a brick wall, a waterproof sheet between two courses 'of said 'wall, said sheet having a metal strip with an offset portion attached to one edge thereof extending beyond the face of said Wall.
