To all whom t Avmay concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD R. PENRosE,
.a citizen of the United States of America,
and a resident of Logansport, in the county of Cass and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improve- The invention further consists in theV means employed for securing a revoluble head to the upper end of the lifting screw.
The invention further consists in providing the screw-operating mechanism with a pivoted socket member t0 lreceive an actuating lever whereby the. operating mechanism may be actuatedY with the actuatingv leverat various angles to said mechanism.
The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be understood readily by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims hereinafter given. i a
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, one preferred form thereof' is illustrated in the drawings, this form having been found to give satisfactory and reliable V(results although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be'variously arranged and organized and the invention is not limited to the precise arrangementand organiin a pin 29 forming a pivot for` the doublezation of these instrumentalities as'herein shown and described, except as required by the scope of the appended claims.

Specification of Letters Patent.

' Formed in the upper end of the base 1(9)` i is a nut 12 in which is mounted a revoluble lifting screw 13.
The upper end of the' lifting screw 13 is provided with the cylindrical bearing surfaces 14 and 15 between which is a flatsided, preferably hexagonal, portion 16.
This hexagonal portion 16I has fitted thereto, a ratchetl, secured to the screw 13 by "means'ofa pin 18 which prevents end movement of said ratchet on said screw 13.
Fitted to the cylindrical bearing surface -15 is a plate 19 and fitted to the cylindrical bearing surface 14 is a similar plate 20.
The parts of said plates 19 and 20 yradiating from the screw 13 have secured'thereto a member v21 interposed between said-plates. These plates 19 and 2O and member 21 arev fastened together by means of bolts 22 a and nuts 23.
This construction:` facilitatesl the assem- `blingof the device but ifdesired the plates 19 and 20v and member 21 may be formed integral.
The member 21 vhas at its outer end an ear bifurcated end 26 of a member 27 having a socket'28 in the outer end thereof vadapted to receive the end of any usual actuatin lever. I
acting pawl' 30. The outer end of the pawl 30 is V-sliaped and is adapted to be engaged by the V- shaped end ofthe locking bolt 31.
This bolt 31 is mounted in a socket 32 in the member 21 and is pressed outwardly by means of the spring 33 in the-rear thereof.
The bolt 31 is provided with a groove 34 extending longitudinally thereof and coactving, with 'a pin 35 threaded to the member 21. AThis pin 31 limits the movementof the bolt 34 in opposite directions and prevents so i V24:' having a bolt 25 yhorizontally disposed Vtherein which bolt 25projects through the the rotation thereof so that the V-shaped end of said bolt 31 is always in position to coact with the V-shaped outer end of the pawl 30.
In Fig. 2 the pawl 30 is shown locked in position to move the operating device in the direction of the arrowa on said figure.
When, however, it is desired to move-the operating mechanism in the opposite direction; the pawl 30 may be snapped past vthe Vshaped end of the lock `bolt 31 and said pawl 30 will then belocked in position to attain a reverse movement of the lifting Screw 13.
Above the plate 5, the screw v13is` provided with `an enlarged end 36 having an annular'groove37 in thel upper face thereof.
This groove has disposed therein a plurality of anti-friction members such as the balls 38 shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
Resting' upon the balls 3S is a revoluble head 39 having an apron 40 extending downwardly and surrounding the enlarged end 36 ofthe screw 13.
The screw 13 is Valso provided with a central, upwardly extending cylindrical projection 41 fitted to a cylindricalfliole in the,
head 39.
The upper end of the head 39 is provided with a shouldered depression 42 in which and against the shoulder of which is positioned a plate 43 secured to the reduced end '41 of the screw 13 by vmeans of a securing member 44.
' The head 39 is provided with a cap 45 secured thereto by means of screws'46, said cap closing the depression 42.
The plate l43'in Vthe depression 42 prevents the headfroin being displaced from the screw 13.
The upper face of the cap 45 is serrated as indicated at 47 and this face engages the work to be lifted when the work is mounted upon the cap 43 and as the load is being lifted the head 39 willbe prevented from rotating while the operating mechanism is effecting the rotation of the screw 13 in th nut 12. Y
This makes a very simple construction of lifting jack well adapted for certain uses, is inexpensive to make, and easily operated.
It is believed that the operation and many opposite sides thereof of a greater diameter l than that of said screw; a ratchet fitted to said f1at-sided portion; a pin extending through said ratchet and screw; and screw operating mechanism having bearings on said cylindrical bearing surfaces and adapted to be oscillated about the axis of said screw. v

The combination of a base provided with a non-revoluble nut; a. lifting screw for said nut having formed integral therewith a cylindricalhead, a cylindrical bearing surface beneath ysaid head having a diameter less than that of said head, a portion beneath said bearing surface having a plurality of flatV sides, and another cylindrical bearing surface beneath said flat-sided portion and having a diameter less than that of the first-mentioned bearing surface and greater than that vof vsaid screw; a ratchet fitted to said flat-sided portion; ineans'preventing endk movement of said ratchet rela? tively to said screw; and screw-operating mechanism having bearings on said cyliiidrical bearing surfaces and adapted to be y oscillated about the axis of said screw.
3. The combination of a vbase provided with a non-revoluble nut; a lifting screw for said iiut having formed integraltherewitli a `cylindrical head and two cylindrical bearing surfaces beneath said head and separated byr a flat-sided peripheral portion; a ratchet fitted to said yflat-sided portion; means preventing end movement of said ratchet relatively to said screw; a bifurcated member straddling said ratchet and having bearings for said separated cylindrical bearing surfaces; and a lspring-pressed pivoted lpawl mounted on said bifurcatedmember and coactiiig with said ratchet.
