To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES PERLEY, of the city, count-y, and State of New York, have invented and made a new and useful Improvement in ChainLocker Pipes for Vessels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1, is a plan of the chain locker pipe as with the cover removed. Fig. 2, is a vertical longitudinal sect-ion. Fig. 3, is a cross section at line 1, 1, of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4, represents the under side of the locking piece.

The like marks of reference denote the same parts in all the figures.

The pipes in general use passing through the deck of vessels to convey the chain cable into the locker, are formed as a simple metal pipe and flanch rising slightly above the deck; the result is t-hat water very often runs down into said chain lockers, and also rats pass down the same into the vessel, particularly when lying at anchor or fastened to a wharf or dock, and besides this difliculty is experienced in holding onto the extreme end of the chain and preventing the same dropping through into the chain locker below.

The nature of my invention consists in fitting thechain locker pipe with a hinged clamp or lock formed on its under side of a shape corresponding to the chain made use of, so that this locking piece when brought down onto the chain effectually holds the ,same from running back into the chain locker, and also allows the vessel to rideat anchor by the same, and being formed to receive the chain as it passes horizontally along on the deck just before it passes down into the chain locker gives facility for applying a metallic or other cover that effectually excludes rats and prevents the entrance of water, and by a small tow packing stuffed in around the chain, the said locker would be made perfectly water tight even if the vessel was submerged, but the locking piece being formed to coincide with the 13,760, dated November 6, 1855.

cl, is a metallic flanch or block extending out on one side of the pipe (b) and forlned with a groove 2, made iiaring at the outer end and curved downward at the inner end so as to allow the chain c, to run freely into or out of the chain locker.

On one side of the block el, I attach the locking piece f, by means of a hinge 3, so that it can be turned out of the way when the chain is passing in or out, and when turned down into place a pin 4, is made use of passing through the side part or fianch d, and this pin 4, I also make use of as a lever to raise up the lock, by inserting the same in the hole 6, provided for that pur pose. On reference to Fig. 4, it will be seen that the under side of the locking piece f, is so shaped as to lit over and permanent-ly hold the chain e, in place, the chain being shown by dotted lines. Thereby the chain cannot become detached, unless desired, without rupture of the parts, and in order to relieve the hinge 3, and pin 4, of any unnecessary strain when the vessel is atanchor, I make use of a square rib 5, entering a mortise in the flanch CZ. By this construction of locking piece to receive the chain horizontally I am enabled to form the upper edge of the flanches d, and c, and locking piece f, of a uniform height so as to receive the cap g, sitting over and around the edges of said parts as seen in Figs. 2, and.

It will be thus seen that my chain locker pipe is simple cheap and eiiicient, dispensing when desired with separate cable Stoppers, or bitts by which the vessel rides atanchor, and accomplishing the beneficial results heretofore specified.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The locking piece f, constructed substantially as specified and applied to the chain tober, one thousand eghthundred and fifty ve.
