AM PHarawmoGreAPH/o C0. mman/ms ma UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY S. DEWEY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO MICHAEL W. WOLF, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN RAILROAD SWITCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 137,535, dated April 8, 1873; application filed September 20, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY S. DEWEY, of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Railroad Switches, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to the combination of crooked rails and frogs with railroad switches, in such a manner as to decrease the liability of the train to run off the track in case ofthe misplacement of switches.
The crooked rails A A are placed beside the switch-rai1s E E, and confined to and moved by the same switch-bar G G and switch-lever L. When the switch is set for the side track N N, the crooked rails A A take the place of the ordinary switch -rails E E. When the switch is so set at the vibratory or movable end, the pivot end is always fixed at the double end of the parallel frogs B B."v Said frogs are laid in and form part of the main track H H, as well as the frogs B B. The object of the crooks in rails A A is to give the proper direction to the engine when running on and off the switch.
When the engine runs onto the said crooked rails A A its massive Weight holds them firmly when the wheels strike the curves; also when the engine leaves the crooked rails A A and runs onto the main track through the frogs B B it describes nearly a straight line, guided by the frog-guard F, leaving the principal con cussion and friction on said crooked rails A A While still under the weight of the engine, and prepared to sustain the said pressure.
I make no claim to the main track, side track, switch, or frog-guard, for I am aware that these are not new; but
I claim as my invention- The combination of the crooked rails A A with the switch-rails E E, side track N N, switch-bar G G, frogs B B, and frog-guard F, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
HENRY S. DEWEY.
