CHARLES MARKHAM CONDER AND GODFREY TWYNAM VIVIAN, or CAMBORNE, ENGLAND.
GRUSHING-MILL OF THE ROLLER AND RING TYP E.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES MARKI-IAM Comma and G ODFREY TWYNAiE VIVIAN, both subjects of the King of Great Britain, and both residing at Camborne, in the county of Cornwall, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Crushing Mills of theRoller and Ring Type, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of crushing, grinding or pulverizing mills which comprise a rotating annular anvil ring against the inner surface of which crushing or hammer rollers are pressed, the crushing operation being effected between the anvil ring and the rollers. This 1nvention comprises certain improvements which render this class of machines more convenient in use and more effective in operation.
According to the present invention the annular anvil ring is preferably mounted on a shaft not having a fixed axis, but which is capable of accommodatingitself to the center of pressure between the rollers, and thus. equalizers the amount of material between the rollers and the ring. other improvements are introduced which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings is shown an example of construction according to the present invention.
Figure 1 shows an end elevation of the machine, with the driving pulley removed and swivel bearing frame broken away so as to show the slide block and spring arrangements.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the machine.
Fig. 3 is a section through the springs and slide blocks showing adjustments.
Fig. i is a plan, with the casing partly broken away so as to show one of the rollers and a portion of the ring.
R-eferring'to the drawings, 1 denotes the base of the machine on which are mounted the half head casting 2, the supporting frame 3 for the slide blocks at, and the frame 5 carrying the swivel bearings 63. The annular anvil ring 7 is carried on. a spider frame 8 mounted so as to turn on a shaft 9 provided with journals 10 suitable for sliding on bearingsurfaces in the half head casting 2. Shafts 12' are mounted at one end in swivel bearings 6 carried by the frame 5, and near their other end in slide p Specification of Letters Patent.
Certain bearings a arranged close up to the head casting 2. These slide bearings are supported on the slide frame 3 and are pressed outwardly toward the inside of the annular ring by means of springs 13. On the ends of the shafts 12, which are preferably tapered and project inside the anvil ring 7, are mounted rollers fl]. adapted to crush or grind the material between them and the inside of the anvil ring 7. As the shafts l2 and consequently also the rollers 11 are capa ble of lateral sliding movement the rollers 11 are enabled to accommodate themselves to the center of pressure between them and the ring 7 cooperating therewith. In this manner the feed of materialbetween the ring and the rollers is equalized as the rollers would move to the center of pressure and equalize the material if more material should be disposed atone point between one of the rollers and the ring. In operation should any hard or uncrushable substance Patented Apr. 12, 1921. Application filed December 10, 1920. Serial No. 429,756.
be fed between any roller 11 and the ring 7, V
the spring or springs 13 yield, and prevent any fracture of the machine, while the crushing pressure which is consequently 111- creased due to the springs compressing is equal and opposite being exerted on the two rollers 11 diametrically opposed inside the annular anvil ring 7. i
For crushing materials of varying hardness screw collars 14 are adapted to be screwed on screwed pins or studsl15 provided on the slide blocks 4 so that the tension of the springs arranged between the opposite ends of the springs 13 are arranged tofit around bosses 30 provided on the blocks 4-. The axes of the roller shafts 12 are atan angle to the horizontal to facilitate p the feed, while the tendency for the weight to keep the roll shafts 12 in the lower posi tion is counteracted by a suitable spring 28 arranged between a lug 31, cast on the frame 3 and the lower slide block/f. The lower end of the spring 28 is adapted to act against the headof a screw pin 27 which screws into a tapped hole in the lug Slon the frame 3 and when the correct position for the roller shafts 12 has been'obtained, by adjusting I the position ofthe screw pinfi' flpacking pieces or shim plates 29 are inserted between the head of the pin 27 and the lug 31.
One of the roller shafts 12 is extended b yond the swivel bearing 6 and has a belt pulley 16 keyed thereto tor driving the machine. On the shafts 12 are mounted suitable sprocket wheels 17 connected together by an endless chain 32. It will be understood that the object of driving both rollers positively is that the wear on the rollers is equalized and any slip with the resulting wear is avoided. The half head casting 2 hereinbe'fore described has ears or lugs 18 cast thereon which are adapted to receive hinge pin 19, passing through similar ears or lugs 33 on the top covers 20, 21. The cover 21 carries the feed chute 22 and hopper 23. A cut-off slide 24 is arranged to operate in a slot machined in the base of the hopper 23 and is drawn in or out by means of a lever attached to a lug 84. by means of a pivot pin 26. By forming the top cover in two parts 20, 21 as set forth, it is possible to swing back the part 20 and inspect the rollers 11 and the ring 7 in their respective working positions.
Having thus described our invention What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
A machine for crushing materials including a frame, an anvil supported by the frame, a pair of shafts, movable bearing blocks supported'on the frame in which the shafts operate crushing rollers mounted on the shafts and adapted to cooperate with the anvil, resilient means disposed between the bearing blocks for normally urging them away from each other, and resilient means normally exerting a pressure on one of the bearing blocks to urge the same toward the opposite bearing block.
