UNITED S'r'rEs rrrcn.
THOMAS M. LOSIE, OF ELMIRA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE LOSllE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE STOVE-PIPE COVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,457, dated April 1, 1873; application filed August 17, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. Losrn, of Elmira, in the county of Ghemung and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Face-Plate Attachments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification and to the letters and figures of reference marked theron.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a front view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear view of my invention. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of my invention.
This invention has relation to the faceplates The devices embodying my invention comprise a metallic face-plate composed of two concentric rings and a central adjustable register or ventilator, and a set of guards or bent wires, de signed to secure the device to the chimney hole and to hold the stove-pipe. The novelty consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the guards or bent wires with reference to the faceplate, substantially as and for the pupose specified.
Referring to the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention, A designates a sheetmetal ring having lugs to rising from its face, and struck up by means of a semicircular punch. The internal diameter of this ring is about or nearly equal to the wall-hole or thimble which receives the end of, a stove-pipe. The inner edge of this ring is flanged at z, and underneath the flanges are laid the curved sections of wire, which form the connections between the guards b and serve to keep said guards in their position perpendicular to the plane of the face-plate. These curved sections of wire are secured by bending the flanged inner edge of the face-plate around them. There are four of said guards, running back from the ring A to a place where they are bent inwardly or radially, and secured together by means of a button, (1. Each pair of guards is formed from a single piece of wire. The sections of said guards running back from the ring touch the surface of the flue-hole or thimble, and are bent to zigzag shapes so as to be stronger and to bite the surface more firmly. These guards serve to hold the ring in place, and also when the stove-pipe is inserted to hold it and prevent it from being pushed too far into the flue. B represents another ring, similar in form but of smaller size than the ring A. This ring overlaps the inner edge of the ring A, and is secured by the lugs a, a notch, 0, being cut in the edge to enable the ring to be put under said lugs. The ring B is employed when the ring A is too large for the stove-pipe, and is also used for the purpose of holding the register or ventilator O, which is applied to the hole in summer time. The register 0 consists of two slotted revolving disks. The spaces or slots may be regulated in size for ventilation purposes or closed altogether. The register is secured to the ring B by means of the struck-up lugs 0 one of the disks having a notch, e, to fit over one of the lugs while the register is being applied or taken off.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The face-plate ring, having its inner edge flanged at z, in combination with the bent wire I) and button (I, substantially as specifled.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS E. LOSIE. Witnesses:
J NO. T. DAVIDSON, JOHN A. REYNOLDS.
