RULE HOLDER.`
APPLICATION FILED IuNE`I. 192o.
Patented Apr. 12 1921.
lllllny, MU MH R m J MORRIS PETERS, INC.- LITHn.. WASHINGTON. Dv C UNITED STATES JOI-IN HERICK, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
RULE-HGLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 12, 1921.
Application filed June 1, 1920. Serialr No. 385,411.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JOHN Herron, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas lCity, in the coimty of Jackson and State of Missouri, have. invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rule-Holders, of which the following is a. specification.
My invention relates to improvements in safety rule holders adapted to be applied to pockets of overalls and other garments to prevent loss of rules from said pockets.
The device is so arranged that it can be readily attached to a garment for use or quickly detached when the garment is to be laundered.
In the accompanying drawing which shows the preferred embodiment of the invention:
Figure l is a front elevation of a pocket equipped with the device.
Fig. 2 is a. broken vertical section on line lim-ll of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the device.
F ig. 4l is a detail perspective of a clamp forming part of the device.
Referring now to the various parts in which like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the different gures of the drawing, A. designates a portion of one of the legs of a pair of overalls having a pocket B consisting of the usual oblong patch stitched at the side and bottom edges to the garment and open at the top for the reception of a rule C.
Referring now more particularly to the novel features of the invention, 2 designates a pad consisting of cloth, leather or other suitable material provided at its front side and intermediate its upper and lower ends with a loop et.
6 designates an elastic of suitable length folded intermediate its ends to form a loop 8 for holding a clamp 10, which is swing ably mounted in said loop 8 to engage and disengage the upper end of the rule C. The clamp l() is, preferably, formed from one piece of wire as disclosed by Fig. 4. The front portion of the clamp l0 is provided with a tab 12 whereby said clamp may be readily swung in and out of engagement with the upper end of the rule.
A cushion 13 is applied to the clamp l0 to prevent the same from scratching or otherwise damaging the rule C when said cla-mp is moved into and out of engagement with said rule.
The elastic 6 extends downwardly through the loop 4 and is detachably secured at its lower end to the lower end of the pad 2 by a fastening device la, which coacts with a similar fastening device 11i in detacha-bly securing the p ad 2 to the garment A. The fastening devices la are, preferably, of a well known form of butto-n embodying two members which can be readily separated so that the pad 2 and parts attached thereto can be removed when the garment is to be washed.
The pad 2 is fixed in such relation to the top of the rule C as to require the elastic 6 to be stretched when the clamp l0 is en gaged over the top of said rule C and cause said clamp to exert a downward pressure upon the rule and thus reliably hold the same in the pocket, irrespective of the position the wearer of the garment may assume, and also while the garment is inverted while being removed from the wearer. By being able to attach the pad 2 higher or lower upon the garment, the device can be readily adjusted to engage rules of different lengths without unduly stretching the elastic 6 and causing it to lose its elasticity.
From the foregoing description it is apparent that l have produced a rule holder embodying the advantages above pointed out, and while l have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, l reserve the right to make such changes in the construction, combination and arrange ment of parts, as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what l cla-im and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A safety device for holding a rule in the. pocket of a garment consisting of a suitable length of elastic adapted to be secured to the garment, and a clamp swingably connected to said elastic and adapted to engage over the upper end of a rule to hold the same in the` pocket.
2. A safety device for holding a rule in the pocket of a. garment consisting of a suitable length of elastic adapted to be secured to the garment, a clamp formed from one piece of wire swingably connected at its rear to the elastic and adapted to engage over the upper end of the rule to hold the same in the pocket, and means secured to the front of said clamp to swing the same in and out .able length of elastic, means for securing said elastic to the garment, a clamp swingably connected at its rear portion to said elastic and adapted to engage over the upper end of a rule to hold the saine in the pocket, land a tab connected to the forward portion of the clamp whereby the same is swung in and out of engagement with the rule.
4:. A safety device for holding a rule in the pocket of a garment consisting of a suitable length of elastic, a clamp swingably connected to said elastic and adapted to engage over the upper end of the rule to hold the same in the pocket, a pad provided with a loop through which the elastic extends,
and means :for detachably securing the elastic to the pad and the pad to the garment.
Y In testimony whereof l aiiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses;
JOHN HERICK.
lfliitnesses F. Gr, FISCHER, L. J. FISCHER.
