Description

A. G. UDGAARD.
WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 24. 1920.

I I 9 I Q ANDREW G. UDGAARD PATENT osricla.
ANDREW G. UDGAARD, OF MILES CITY, MONTANA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
WRENCH.
Patented Mar. 29,1921.
Application filed May 24, 1920. Serial No. 383,676.
1 To all whom it may concern:
7 I the following is a specification.
This invention relates to socket Wrenches and the object is to provide a simple and eificient wrench having an improved form of socket. The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved wrench.
Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the socket shown at the lower extremity of the wrench in Fig. 1. 7
F ig.' 3 is a diametrical sectional view of the lower portion of the wrench as seen in Fig. 1, but showing the socket in compressed position.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 in Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, -5 designates the shank of a wrench, shown as bent to form a handle 6, and provided with a top handle 7. The lower end of the shank is shaped into a substantially. rectangular portion 8, on which is slidably but not rotatably mounted a socketmember 9 having a hexagonal (or other desired) shaped opening adapted to be engaged by a nut or bolt head (not shown).
A hexagonal washer or cleaning plate 10 is riveted to the end of the shank 8 and is adapted to slide snugly in the socket 9.
A pin 11 is secured in the shank 8. Between said pin 11 and the socket member 9, and about the shank 8 is placed a coil spring 1-2, which tends to hold the socket down against the washer 10.
With socket wrenches heretofore it has been found a common source of annoyance to have the socket fill up with dirt or to have a nut get stuck so tightly therein that it takes considerable time and patience to clear the socket again. This is positively overcome by'my construction insomuch that the socket can be quickly and easily cleaned by merely knocking or pushing it back against the spring 12, which spring will immediately thereafter again restore the socket to its normal position.
Having now therefore fully shown and described my invention what I claim to be new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A wrench of the class described consisting of a shank adapted to be turned, a socket member adapted to be slidably positioned on one end portion of said shank, said socket member having a multilateralelongated carity therein, a cleaning plate secured to the end of said shank portion, said plate adapt: 'ed to snugly fit 1n and slide in said cavity,
a spring adapted to yieldingly pressagainst said socket member and hold it normally in extended position against said cleaning plate.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ANDREW o. UDGAARD.
