COMBINED TOILET ARTICLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led March 30, 1920. Serial No. 369,897.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, RAMN Dn- ECHE- VARRIA, a subject of the King of Spain, residing at Santa Cruz, in Tagulaya, Davao, .Philippine Islands, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Toilet .Articles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to a combination toilet article. f
The object of the invention is to produce a toilet article embodying, in a single struc ture a razor of the ordinary class, a safety razor, a hair cutter, a comb, a screw driver, a nail cutter, a nail file and a shoe buttoner. The foregoing objects, and others which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and operative arrangement of parts such as is illustrated by the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a view of the improvement employed as a comb.
Fig. 2 is a view showing the device em- K ployed as a double-edge comb.
Fig. 3 is a view of the device employed as an ordinary razor, that is, a razor in which the blade is not protected, one edge of the blade, however, being covered by the toothed element of the improvement, while a portion of the handle is broken away andthe pintle-11 is shown in section.
Fig. 4 is a view showing the device employed as a safety razor.
` Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 isa sectional view approximately `on-the line 6-6 of Fig. 4.
Fig.`- 7 is a sectional view approximately on the line 7-7 of Fig. 1. 1
Fig. 8 isa perspective view of the main member detached "from the handle.
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the removable member.l
Fig. 10 is a perspective view of the wedge member which includes the nail cutter, file and screw driver. y
Fig. 11 is a plan View of the blade.
As disclosed by the drawings, the improvement contemplates a handle member 10 which comprises spaced sidesconnected at theirouter ends and having at their inner ends a transversely arranged removable connecting member in the nature of a pintle 11. The pintle passes through a preferably square opening 12 adjacent one end of a shank -13 of my improvement. The end of the shank, outward of the opening 12 is cut or otherwise formed to provide a hook 14, and this hook serves as a shoe buttoner. The opening itself, when the main member is removed rom the handle may serve as a wrench, but in addition to this the said shank vis provided with another s uare openin which may be larger than the rst mentione opening and which serves as a wrench. This opening is indicated by the numeral 15.v
The shank is in the nature of a fiat member formed, approximately midway of its length with a depressed or channeled portion that extendsfto the outer end thereof and Patented Mar. 22, 1921.
which, in reality provides the head for the head also provides a shoulder 19 at its juncture with the shank, and the head has spaced substantially rectangular openings 20 therethrough.
The removable member is broadly indicated by the numeral 21 and is in the nature of a comb, having its outer portion or head 22 in the nature of a flat plate but provided,
upon Vits inner edge, and on one of its faces with a ledge or shoulder 28, and from this shoulder portion extend the teeth 24. The head is of a length to be received 'in the depressed face of the head of the main member and to Contact with both the inner and 'longitudinal shoulders thereon, "(while' the outer edge of the head of the main member is designed to-engage with the shoulder or ledge 23 of the member '21, when the members are assembled. The head 22 of the member 21, upon its referred to reduced face isprovided with hooks 25 that have their beaks extending in the same direction, and these hooks are designed to pass through the openings in the head. i Y
-The locking key comprises a flat plate and is indicated by the numeral 26. This key has spaced slots or openings 27 therein which are designed to be arranged longitudinally against the outer face of the head of the main member and to receive the hooks 25 of the removable comb member. When the removable member is arranged upon themain member as above described the width of the key member is sufficient to tightly engage with the inner faces of the beak portions of the hooks 25 to hold the sections assembled, but when the parts are arranged to produce other articles such engagement of the key with the hooks would not permit of a space between the members to receive the blade, which will presently be referred to in detail, and therefore I depress one of the faces of the key in a line with one of the end walls of the openings. the said depressions being indicated by the numerals 38. The key, upon one of the faces thereof is serrated to provide a nail lile 29. and upon one of the ends thereof is reduced and sharpened to provide a screw driver 30. one of the edges of the reduced portion being sharpened, as at 31 to provide a nail cutter.
The blade employed with my improvement is of that class used upon a safety razor of the Durham class and is indicated by the numeral 32. The blade has both of its ends sharpened and is centrally provided with an elongated slot 33. When the blade is to be used upon the device as an ordinary razor the hooks of the removable member are passed through the slot 33 in the said blade. The hooks are also passed through the openings in the head of the main member. and the teeth of the removable member are arranged in the same direction as the teeth of the main member. This permits of the depressed face of the head of the main member being arranged outwardly, and in the said depression the key 26 is arranged. The slots in the key receive the projecting beaks of the hooks 25, and in order to properly compress the elements the beaksl of the hooks are received -in the depressed portions 28 which aline with the openings 27 in the key. It should be stated that the key is of a length approximately equaling that of the head of the removable member and the depressed portion in the head of the main member.
When the device is employed as a safety razor the same is arranged on the removable member as just described. but the removable lmember is positioned on the main member so that the teeth thereof extend in an opposite direction from the teeth of the main member, or in other words the removable member is positioned as when the device is employed as a double comb. The key is arranged over the outer face of the head of the main member to permit the hooks 25 passing through the openings 27 thereafter the key is moved longitudinally in an inward direction to permit of the inner faces or the hooks being received in the depressed oortions 28 of the key.
lt is thought that from the foregoing description. when taken in connection with the drawings the simplicity of the construction and the advantages thereof will be apparent without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what 1s claimed as new. is
l. In a device for the purpose set forth, a handle comprising spaced sides having one of their ends connected and a removable pintle at its other end.. a slotted shank engaged bv the pintle` said shank having an extension providing a head, t-lie said head being depressed from one of its faces and provided with openings. said head having teeth projecting from the shoulder provided by the iepression. a removable member including a head having a depressed face and teeth extending from the shoulder provided by the depression. the head of the last mentioned member having hooks extending in :he same direction and designed to be passed through the openings in the first mentioned member. and the shoulders of the respective members designed to co-a'ct when the menioers are arranged in one position, a key member having slots therein designed to receive the beaks or' the hooks and to be moved longitudinally to frictionally engage with said hooks and hold the members assembled.
.t ln combination with a two-sided handle having one of its ends connected and its other end provided with a pintle, of a flat plate including a head and a shank co-extensive with the head, both the head and the shank being slotted and one of the slots of the said shank designed to be engaged by the pintle of the handle, the head having one of its faces depressed to provide a lower and an inner end shoulder, teeth on the head extending from the lower shoulder, a removable member including a flat head having one of its edges provided with an outstanding ledge and teeth projecting from the said ledge, the head of the last mentioned member having hooks extending in the same `iirection. a slotted blade designed to be aranged between the members and to receive through the slot thereof the hooks of the removable member, said hooks designed to also pass through the openings in the head of the lirst mentioned member, and a key having slots therein and being depressed in a line with said slots designed to be arranged over the hooks and to be moved longitudinally to bring the depressed portions thereof into frictional engagement with the hooks to retain the first mentioned members assembled.
ln testimony whereof I alx my signature.
RAMN DE ECHEVARRIA.
