UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT A. BRUDER AND AUGUST J. BRUDER, OF HOLLY, MICHIGAN.
VENTILATOR FOR CLOSET-BOWLS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 22, 1921.
Application filed October 16, 1920. Serial No. 417,306.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALBERT A. BRE'DER and Atetsr J BRUDER, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Holly, in the coimty of Oakland and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilators for Closet-Bowls. of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
In our Patent X0. 962,190, granted June- 28, 1910, there is disclosed a novel ventilating attachment for closets, wherein the closet bowl or hopper is provided with a hollow ported seat member adapted to communicate with the atmosphere and providemeans of carrying off foul air and obnoxious odors. g
This invention aims to provide a some what similar ventilating attachment which may be manufactured at a comparatively small expense, more readily installed, and more easily maintained in a sanitary condition. The attachment is particularly characterized by a novel outlet member with which the hollow seat communicates, the outlet member being anchored in position relative to a bowl or hopper by a fixture of the bowl or hopper, and the attachment in its entirety does not encumber the bowl or hopper, detract from its appearance or in any manner interfere with the customary use. Instead, it contributes to a thorough sanitation and a toilet fixture possessing many advantages compared to bowls and hoppers now in use.
Our invention will be hereinafter described in connection with the drawing. wherein- Figure 1 is a plan of the ventilating bowl attachment, partly broken away and partly in section, and
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the closet bowl provided with the attachment, which is partly" broken away and partly in section. 1
In the drawing, the reference numeral 1 denotes a conventional form of bowl or hopper having a rim 2 with its rear edge provided with an'extension 3, and mounted in said extension are spaced vertically disposed bolts 4 having the upper ends thereof provided with heads 5 resting on the extension 3. The lower ends of the bolts thave nuts 6 retaining said bolts in engagement with the extension.
The bolt heads 5 are provided with transversely alming openings to receive the reduced ends 7 of a pin 8 supported by the heads 5 in spaced relation to the extension 3. The pm 8 will be held between the heads 5 and the outer ends of said pin may be prov1ded with detachable ornamental heads 9.
Detachably mounted on the rim 2 of the bowl 1 is ahollow seat member 10 having its inner walls at the front of the bowl, provlded with an opening 11 and the inner wall of said seat member has another opening 12 at the rear portion of the bowl 1, so that foul air may escape through the openings 11 and 12 of the hollow seat member. The rear portion of the hollow seat member terminates in a chamber 13 having a fiat wall 14 provided with a large opening 15, said opening being in a plane with the open ings 11 and 12- and longitudinally alining therewith.
The rear portion of the hollow seat member 10 has side cars 16 which are slotted or somewhat hooked shaped, as at 17, so that the ears 16 may be fitted down over the reduced ends 7 of the pin 8. between the heads 5 of the bolts 4.- and the heads 9 of the pin 8. The space between the hook shaped ears 16 is such that said ears may be accurately fitted against the outer side walls of the bolt heads 5 and these bolt heads will prevent wabbling or lateral displacement of the hollow member 10 relative to the bowl rim 2. The hook shaped ears 16 may serve as supporting means for a hinged or pivoted lid 18 should it be desired to close the top of the hollow seat member 10.
Abutting the flat wall 13 of the hollow seat member 10 and communicating with the opening 15 of said flat wall is the inner flattened end portion 19 of an outlet member 20 adapted to communicate with the atmosphere. The inner flattened end portion 19 of the outlet member 20 corresponds in width to the distance between the bolt heads 5 so that the end portion of said outlet member may be accurately fitted on the extension 3 and held against lateral displacement by the bolt heads 5.
The inner end portion 19 of the outlet member 20 is made of a depth to fit between the pin 8 and the extension 3, and to prevent longitudinal displacement of the inner end of the outlet member the upper wall of said member, adjacent the sides thereof, has a set of lugs 21, said lugs providing seats for the pin 8, so that said pin may cooperate with the bolt heads 5 and the extension 3 in positively holding the inner end of the outlet member in position to have the hollow seat member 10 communicate therewith.
The hollow seat member 10 may be made of aluminum or any light and durable material that will not corrode or which may be finished so as not to corrode and at the same time afford a neat appearance that will harmonize with the finish of the bowl 1. With the hollow seat member 10 detachable it may be removed and dipped, flushed 0r otherwlse treated to render it sanitary. The arrangement of the openings 11, 12 and 15 are such that-a swab may enter a hollow seat member and clean the inner walls thereof.
What we claim is 1. The combination of a closet bowl, a hollow seat member thereon. an outlet member having an end portion on said bowl communicating with said hollow seat member.
' and means supported by said bowl and ineluding bolts at the sides of the end portion of said outlet member and a pin above the end portion of said outlet member and connecting said bolts for permanently holding the end portions of said outlet member and positioning said hollow seat member on said bowl.
2. The combination with a closet bowl, of a hollow seat member on said bowl provided with openings communicating with said bowl, bolts carried by said bowl, a pin connecting said bolts, an outlet member between said bolts and under said pin and communicating with said hollow seat member, and means carried by said hollow seat member engaging said pin to detachably hold said hollow seat member relative to said bowl.
3. The combination set forth in claim 2, wherein additional means on said outlet member cooperates with said pin in preventing displacement of said outlet member.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
