VERMIN-PROOE COMBINED MATTRESS YAND SPRING.
' To all wit-om it may concern.'
of vermin lodging thereonl or getting inside j thereof 'is prevented and which may be washed without in anyway injuring it, either by submerging it in water or other cleansing iiuid or applying said iuid thereto in any desired manner;
Another object is to so constructthe mattress that yit will not require the use of a spring and yet will be sufficiently resilient to be thoroughly comfortable.
Another object is to construct a mattress ,of this character made of rubber of varying resiliency, the members of which are vulcanized together so as to produce a smooth joint to avoid forming harbors for .vermin and to render it comfortable to the user.
With these and other objects in view,` the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as herinafter shown and Vdescribed, and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure l represents a perspective View of a mattress constructed in accordance with this invention; and, v
Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof.
In the embodiment illustratedthe inflatable mattress 1 constituting thisinvention comprises a rectangular lower section 2 constructed of vulcanized rubber and .fabric similarv to the casing of a pneumatic tire and of athickness to render the side and end walls suiciently stiff to prevent collapse when subjected to the weight of the user and to cause the section to maintain its shape when inflated. This rubberized fabric must also be airtight to provide for the section 2 being inflated in a manner hereinafter described. l
This lower section -2 forms a substitute for the woven wire or spiral spring ordinarily used and includes a. bottoin, top 4:, end
Specification of Letters Patent. 'Patente Man 15, 1921,l Application filed Dctober 8, 1920. Seria1 No. 415,594.
This section 2 is surmounted by a correspondingly-shaped section 8 composed of .soft rubber of the same character-vas the inner tube of a pneumatic tire and which is vulcanized to section 2' along the upper edges of the sides and ends -ofsaid section forming a smooth connection so lthat no shoulders, or indentations will be such as would be likely to harbor vermin. lThe superposed sections 2 and 8 form individual air chambers which are designed to be inflated to withstand any'desired pressure, each having a valve as shown at'7 and lformed 9- for connection with a pump or other suitable compressed air source.
A mattress constructed as above described will be thoroughly sanitary in'thatit can be washed and disinfected whenever necessary either by deiiating it or not and it may be entirely submerged in acleansing fluid without injuriously affecting it. The exterior' o nly of the mattress is subject to infection since no germs can obtain access to the inte- The lower section 2 is preferably inflated to a pressure ofabout forty-five or fifty pounds and the upper section may be inflated to suit the wishes of the user and may be rendered' either hard or soft according to thedegreeof inflation. When so iniated a thoroughly' comfortable bed is provided without the use of any springs and one which can be readily collapsed for storing.
or transportation.'
' The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set lforth in the specification, but it will be understood that any modifications within the scope of the claims may be made in the construction without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What T claim is: V 1. A. vermin-proof mattress composed o ico superposed iniiatnble sections', the lower -being constructed of :r vulcanized compara.- tively hard rubber fabric. and adapted to perform the funetion'of a spring and the upper of soft rubber to provide a. bed of varying softness.
2. A vermin-proof mattress composed of superposed inflatable sections, the lower being constructed of n vulcanized .comparatively hard rubber fabric and the upper of soft rubber, said sections being vulcanized together to form a smooth airtight joint.
3. A vermin-proof mattress 'composed of a closed, airtight molded lower section with 4. A vern'iin-proof mattress composed of ai lower molded hollow rubber section having n n inflation valve, the rubber being of sufficient rigidity to avoid collapse under ordinary conditions, and a soft rubber seetion superposed on said irst mentioned section and vulcanized thereto and equipped with an infiation valve.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature hereto.
