Our invention relates to improvements in safety devices for presses, of the form used as a guard or protection for the operator of a punch press or any of the various forms -of presses used for punching and forming? operations and particularly to prevent injury to the hands of the operator, and the. object of our improvement is to produce a device that is simple and reliablefor the purpose specified, and which, furthermore, is particularly effective and efiiclent in that it involves in use a' positive connection for I the hands of the operator with the moving part of the press whereby the hands are positively pulled away from the position of.

atsoever the method may be for operatlng the moving dle, in operating the press, durlng the per1od of separation of the dies the operator has occasion to bring either one or both hands in the space between the dies forhandlmg the work and must, in order to avoid injury, withdraw the hand or hands from such positlon before the dies come together. Accidents happen, resulting in inury to the operator, in cases in whlch such withdrawing of the hands from'the danger zone is left entirely to the action of the operator By the-use of our invention the operator can withdraw his hands from the danger zone freely, substantially in the same manner as if there were no safety device provided, but in case of neglect on the part of the operator to do so the safety device operates positively to pull the hands away, so that the operator is not relied upon for safe operation.
The manner of effecting this result is as follows :-The device is arranged duplex and symmetrical on the two sides, comprising for each side a cord 18 rove through suitable guide pulleys, connected by the upper end to the moving blockl and promoving block 14 in time to prevent being caught between the dies12 and 1 5.
I As shown, there are two guide pulleys for the cord, comprising for each side an upper pulley 21, posltioned to one side and-secured to the opposed upright 13 and preferably slightly above the uppermost position of the upper end of the cord 18, and the lower pulley 22, which, as shown,,is supported at about the level of the lower, fixed die 12 and to one side, being supported from the base 10 by a side bracket 23.
Sash-cord may be used for the cord 18. The upper end of the said cord 18 may be secured to an eye, as a screw-eye 24, 1n the front face of the block 14,
An elongated spring 25 may beprovided to take up slack, being secured by the lower I end of the bracket 23 and having the upper end 26 secured to the generally upwardly directed body portion 27 of the cord 18.
In some cases the cord may be inclosed by the coils of the spring.

A safety device for presses having a fixed die and a movable die comprising a cord having one end connected to the movable die, having the other end adjacent the fixed die and provided with means for ,being secured to the hand of the operator, and guide means for guiding the body portion of the said cord, and the parts being constructed and arranged to pull the said other end away from the said fixed die during the movement of the movable die, suitably to withdrawthe hand 6f the operator away from the danger zone between the two dies.
2. A safety device for presses as described in claim 1 and provided with an elongated spring, connected to the said cord, for taking upslack in the corddu'ring the movements of the movable die.
