VENT-COVER FOR STORAGE BATTERIES.
Specification of Letters Patent. .PafentedMa 1, 1.921
Application filed September 18, 1919. SeriaI No. 324,638
To all'whom it may concern: Be it known that'I, Bacon Fom), a cit zen of the United States, residing at Phlladelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Vent-Cover for Storage Batteries, of which'thefollowing 1s a specification.
Storage battery jars, more especially those in use on submarines, are provided with openings used for filling and for the ingress of air for ventilation, and these openings are or should beprovided with detachable covers adapted to emit of the free ingress of air and to exc ude foreign articles and removable for the purpose of filling or refilling the jars.
' 'pal object of the present 1n- The prmci vention 1s to rovide a vent cover of a form and construction which can be made of hard Figure 1, is a sectional view illustrating a vent cover embodying features of the invention in application to a cell cover of which only parts are shown.
Fig. '2, is a plan view of the under side of the cover, and
Figs. 3 and 4, are sections taken on the lines 3-3, and 4-4 of F ig. 1.
- In the drawings the venticover, consisting of hard rubber or rubber material, com-- prises a dished diskor cap 1, internally provided with intersecting or cruciform ribs or radiating webs'2and 3, having axial-ex tensions l and 5, at the central portion of the disk, toform a guide, a nd some of the extensions are laterally provided with locking flanges 6, disposed toward the rim of the disk. As shownthe locking flanges are curved and are supported by walls 7 and 8, extending to theinner face. of the disk.
Those skilled in the art of hard rubber manufacture will know that the described formand structure can be successfully manufactured from hard rubber or rubber ma- .terial and it ma be remarked that the cruciform shape'og the rims affords free ingress, all around the rim, for air. In use the extensions 5 and 4, for-ma stem or guide for inserting the vent cover into the open end of the tube or stand pipe 9, of the vent fittingor ventilatin tube, and the locking flanges 6, upon suita 1e rotary movement of the cover, engage grooves 10, in the interior of the tube 9, afterthe manner of a bayonet joint, and so prevent accidental detachment of the cover, while permitting of its ready prising a dished disk internally provided, withcruciform ribs having axial extensions v at the central portion of the disk to-form a guide and some of the extensions laterally provided with locking flanges disposed toward the rim of the disk.
2. A vent cover for storage batteries'comprising'a dished disk internally provided with cruciform ribs having axial extensions at the central portion of the disk to form a guide and some of the extensions laterally provided with, curved locking flanges disposed toward the rim of the disk and equippedwith supporting walls extending I to the innerface of the disk.
I 3. A vent for storage batteries consisting of the combination of a ventilatin tube,
and a cap mounted over the end of t e tube;
and provided with radiating webs having ventilation spaces between them and extending into the tube to center the cap, substantially as described.
4. A vent for storage batteries consisting of the combination of a ventilating tube, a cap covering the end of the tube and provided with radiating webs having ventilae tion spaces between them and of'which portions extend into thetube and of which portions abut on the end of the tube and aim stitute stops.
