To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE A. Bowman, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dante, in the county of Russell and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fluid-Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a fluid pump of the rotating impeller type, and is especially adapted for mine water handling in View of the fact that its construction embraces but a single moving part readily adjustable'to compensate for weardue to grit, acid water and other sludge material encountered in mine pumping conditions.
The invention has, as a further object, the provision of a pump which is so constructed that the impeller acts to uniformly accelerate the velocity of the water from the inlet to the discharge side of the pump.
A further feature of the invention is the mounting of the impeller in a pump casing having the inlet and discharge heads separable from the pump casing body, which latter part is a relatlvely simple casting requiring but little machining and hence may be cheaply replaced and the same inlet and discharge heads used with a new pump casing body. The impeller of the pump forms another novel feature of the invention in that the fluid pumped is uniformly accelerated in the passage from end to end of the impeller by reason of the fact that the impeller is of a type having a continuous helical rib of increasing pitch from the inle to the discharge end thereof.
Another object of the invention resides in the provisionof a ump which is outside packed and is so 00 structed that the packing is accessible without disturbing the pump connections or setting.

In detail: The pump comprises a pump casing body A having'a base 1 and a pump casing body 2 which is provided with a passage 3 tapering from the inlet toward the discharge end. The base 1 is strengthened by the ribs 4 and may be bolted in place. by suitable lag screws or other'means 5 as shown. The inlet and discharge ends of the um casin body 2 are flanged as shown at 6 a d 7 a? purposes to be hereinafter set forth. The impeller consists .of a shaft 8 having keyed as at 9 or otherwise secured thereto an impeller 10 having the continuous helical rib 11 of gradually increasing pitch from the. Inlet to the discharge end so as to uniformly accelerate the velocity of the fluid pumped toward the dlscharge end thereby making it possible to pump against a relatively large head of Water.
{it the intake end the flange 7 of the pump caslng body is bolted to the flange 12 of an intake head 13 which incloses the intake end port on of the impeller shaft 8 and also is provided with an intake passage 14 adapted to receive the threaded end of an intake pipe 15, said intake head being secured in place by bolts 16 extending through the flanges 7 and 12 with a suitable packing ring 17 therebetween, which bolts are tightened up by means of the nuts 18. The intake head s cut out as shown at 19 to receive a hearing collar 20 which seats against the shoulder 21 in said cut-out and a spring 22 bears against said collar 20 and also re celves one side 23 of a stufling box the other side of which is flanged as shown at 24 to fit over the side 23 of said stufling box and both sides are beveled to accommodate the packing 25, as shown. Adjustment of the stuffing box for tightening on the shaft 8 is secured by means of a stufiing box face plate 26 bearing against the outer end of the stuffing box and adjusted by means of bolts 27 screwing into the intake head. The end 28 of the intake head is bored out or cored out as shown to receive the said face plate 26 .and the outer end of the said intake head is flanged as at 29 to receive an end bearing 30 havlng the bearing bushing 31 and the flange 32 which bolts up against the flange 29 and seats against the packing ring 33 and is held in place by bolts 34 and nuts 35. The extreme end of the shaft carries one half of a flanged coupling 36 which is bolted to a similar half 37 by means of bolts 38 and nuts 39 for the purpose of direct connection of said shaft to the shaft 40 of a suitable prime mover such as an electric motor ,or the like. The outlet or dischar e head of the pump is formed similarly to t e and which ha'sa spring reason of the fact that it seats on a suitable packin ring 43 and the shaft 8 extends throug a "collar 44 seatin on a shoulder 46 bearing therea'gainst and the end of which spring receives one half 47 of a stufling box, the other half of which is indicated at 48 and has a flange e extending over the opposite side of t stufling box and both halves be1ng beveled to receive the packing. 49, the stufling box being tightened up against said packing by the face plate 50 screwed down into position by the bolts 51, the discharge head 41 being cored out or bored out as shown at 52 to receive said face plate and having a flange 53 which is secured bv bolts 54 and nuts 55 to 'a flange 56 of a thrust bearin head to be later described, a suitable pac ing rin 57 being placed between the two flanges. he thrust bearing head 58 is extended from the flange 56 and carries a bearing bushing 59 which has a shoulder 60 receiving the ball race 61 accommodating the balls 62 and which 'coiiperate with a second ball race 63 .held thereagainst by a bearing plate 64 and a nut 65 on the end of the shaft 8 and to which access may be had by-means of the cover plate 66 held in place by bolts 67 and nuts 68 so as to protect the bearing and will be noted that there is very little likelihood of any leakage past said stufling boxes. I claim:
1. A pump comprising a conical casing having its ends open and provided with flanges, inlet and discharge heads having flanges secured to said first named flanges, a shaft extending through said heads and provlded witha conical impeller arranged within said casing and having a helical rib of gradually increasing pitch toward the discharge end, said heads being provided with chambers having shoulders, bearing collars having shoulders contacting with said first named shoulders, stufling boxes within said chambers and provided with interfitting sections and packing, glands adjustably connected to said heads, and closure plates at the ends of said chambers for concealing said stufling boxes and provided with bearings rotatably receiving said shaft.
2. A pump comprising a conical casin having its ends open and provided wit flanges, inlet and discharge heads having flanges secured to said first named flanges, a shaft extending-through said heads and provided'with a conical impeller arranged within said casing and having a helical rib of' gradually increasing pitch toward the dischar e end, said heads being provided shoulders, bearin collars having shoul ers contacting witl i said first named shoulders, stufiing boxes within said chambers and, provided with interfitting sections and packing, lands adjustably connected to said hea s, closure plates at the ends of said chambers for concealing said stufling boxes and'provided with bearings rotatably receiving said shaft, and an end thrust bearing arranged upon one end of said shaft.
