IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.

, Myinvention has for its lobject Vto furnish an improved machine for washing clothes, which shall be simple in construction, convenient in use, and eii'ective in operation, Wash-v ing the clothes quickly and thoroughly, and without injuring them, and which may be used as a receptacle for unwashed clothes and as a wash-stand. rlhe invention consists in the combination of a concave stationary rubbing surface, and a vibrating rubber .of corresponding form, pivoted in slotted bars, which are provided with lateral arms or extensions, hinged to the side ot' the tub or box, as hereinafter described.

A is the box of the machine, which is made with vertical sides, inclined ends, and horizontal bottom, as shown in Figs. l and 2, and is supported upon legs B of such a length as to raise the machine to a convenient height. G is-a frame, which is iitted into the box A, and

theinner edges of the side bars of which are l curved upon the arc of a circle, and havel Wires D, ot' iron or other suitable metal, attached to them about an inch apart. The wires D are further secured in place by semicircular plates c', placed upon arid secured to the curved edges of the said side bars of the I E. The disks E are further connected by a rod, G, that passes through their middle parts, and the ends of which project to serve as pivots H, or as supports for said pivots H. The pivots H enter and work in longitudinal slots, in the vertical arms of the bent bars I, so that the rubber may move up and down to adjust itself to the thickness of the clothes to be operated upon. The upper ends of the said slots are enlarged to allow the said pivots to pass in and out readily. The enlarged upper ends of 'said slots are covered to prevent the pivots from coming out accidentally,by buttons J, the upper ends of which are pivoted to theupper ends ofthe vertical ends` of tle bars I,

and their lower ends are notched, so that should the pivots I rise to the upper part of their slots they may enter the said notches and thus lock the buttons J. The bars I are bent at right angles and their horizontal arms extend along and rest upon the upper edges ot' the plate c ofthe frame C, and have hooks4 formed upon their ends to hook into eyes or staples attached to the said frame G Vso that the rubber can be conveniently turned back for the ready insertion and removal of the clothes. To the middle parts of the semicircular disks E are attached the lower ends of the levers K, in the upper ends of which Work the ends of the round L, whichis designed to serve as a handle in operating the machine. To the middle part of the round L is attached an eye or staple, M, to receive a hook, N, attached to the end of a rod or bar, O, so-that the machine may be operated when desired by a person sitting atthe end of the box A. l) is the cover of the box A, which is hinged at one edge to the upper edge of one side ot' the box A, so that it may be turned back into a horizontal position to serve as a table to hold the clothes when being put into and removed from the machine. The free edge of the cover P is supported when turned back by a detachable leg, Q, which is connected with said cover by a hook and eye, or other convenient detachable means. The cover Pis provided with an upwardly-projecting ilange, R, along the edge of its two ends and one side, to adept the boX and cover, when the rubber has been removed, to serve as a wash-stand.

It should be observed that When the rod or bar O N s used the round L should be made rigid by a pin passed through its end and through the lever K.
