ANCHORING- DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Norman S. SKED, residing at Pennington, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented certain Imprm'enients in Anchoring Devices, of which the following is a specification;
This invention relates to anchoring devices, and more particularly to improvements in the eyes of said devices through which a guy or other supporting stay may be looped whereby the strains arising from the bending or looping of. the said guys or stays through the said eyes may be minimized.
In the construction of electrical transmission lines it is customary to reinforce the strength of the poles of these lines at points which are or may be subjected to excessive strains by extending a guy from a pole to an anchor buried in the ground, or to some other anchorage. One end of the guy, which usually consists of steel wires stranded. together, is made fast to the pole, and the other end is looped through the eye or ring of the anchoring device. After the guy. has been pulled to the desired. tension, the free end is fastenedto the standing portion of the guy. In order to avoid injury to the strands of the guy at the point where it passes through the eye of the anchoring device, while the guy is being pulled up, and after the guyhas been made fast, it
has, been customary to insert a thimble in the eye of the anchor rod and to place the guy in the groove of this thimble prior to pulling the guy taut.
The thimble generally used heretofore consisted of a grooved strip of metal bent into the shape of a horseshoe or a ring, and adapted to be linked with the eye thereby encircling, either partly or entirely, the rod forming the-eye. The radius of curvature of the groove of the thiinble is substantially the same as that of the guy, and the radius 2 of curvature of thebend of the thimble is greater than the radius of a cross-sectionct the rod or bar forming the eye, at the point where the guy Will normally. rest when pulled taut. In practice it has been found diflicult to prevent the thimble from becoming dislocatedwhcn the necessary tension was being applied to the guy, thereby permitting the guy to be bent around the rod forming the eye, and subjecting the strands of the guy to severe bending stresses. has necessitated releasing the tension on the guy and again readjusting it in the groove of the thimble. My invention substantially eliminates the trouble heretofore experienced. since the thimble is designed to tit tightly in the eye of the anchoring device, and to form a rigid combination therewith.
This invention will be more fully understood by referring to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a plan view of said thimble, and Fig. 2 represents the arrangement of the thiinbie within the eye of the anchor rod. The thimble shown in Fig. 1 may be made of malleable iron or other suitable material, in substantially the form shown therein. The groove 1, which is adapted to receive the rod that forms the eye of the anchor, has approximately the same radius as the rod by which the eye is formed. The groove 2, which is adapted to receive the guyand to form an adequate bearing surface therefor, lies in a plane substantially perpendicular to the plane of groove 1 and has a radius plurality of separate grooves, each capable.

, The thimble is attached to the anchoring device, as shown in Fig. 2, by bending or forming the anchor rod around the thiinble 3 in such manner that, whenbent in the position shown in Fig. 2. the rod will fit closely into groove 1 of the thimble. The free end of the rod is then welded or otherwise fastened to the other portion of the rod at point 4 thereby forming the eye. The rod and thimble, shown in Fig. 2, may then be galvanized or otherwise treated to prevent rusting. By properly designing the thimble and by carefullyv adjusting the anchor rod to the thimble in the process of assembling the parts it is practicable to obtain a combination of eye and thimblc that will remain stable when subjected to the strains due to pulling. up the guy 5 that rests in the groove 2 of the thimble. It will be seen, therefore, that by means of this invention, the difiiculty heretofore experienced has been substantially eliminated.
Although the invention has been shown and described as embodied in a particular.
form, it is evident that it is not restricted or limited to such form, and. that it is capable of embodiment in other forms within the scope of the appended claims.
Whatis claimed is:
1. In an anchoring device, the combination of an anchor rod having an eye formed in one end thereof, and a thimhle having two grooves, one of which is adapted to close cooperate with that part of the rod forinin the eye, so that the thiinble will be rigidly held in definite position in the. said eye, and the other groove being adapted to form a bearing surface for a guf: wire that may he looped through the. eye of the said anchor rod.
2. In an anchoring device, the COIl1l)ll1\- tion with an anchor rod adapted tor connection with a guy of a thimble having two grooves therein, the planes of which are substantially perpendicular to each other, one of said grooves being adapted to fit within the eye of the said rod and to be rigidly held therein and the other of said grooves adapted to form the bearing: surface for the said guy.
3. In an anchoring device, the combination with a thiinble having therein two grooves, the planes of said grooves being substantially perpendicular to each other, of a rod adapted to he formed into one of said grooves and having its free end securely attached to the main portion of said rod whereby the thinihle is rigidly fastened to said rod and a guy adapted to be formed.
