UNITED STATES PATENT GUSTAF L. FINSTRGTI. Ol CHICAGO, LLENOIS.
PORTBLE BED.
Application filedv September To @ZZ whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, GUsTAF L. -FrNsTnonn a citizen ont the United States, residing at Chicago, in trie county of Cook and State of illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Portable Beds, or" which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to folding, collapsible or contractible beds, cots and the like and has practical reference to the conveniently portable types thereof. The object of my invention is to provide a bed of this type which may be constructed so that it may be reduced to substantially suit case space dimensions when not in use and yet be nrmly supported and supporting.
il? ith these general objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction., combination and arrangement ot parts, all hereinafter described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing` and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing- Figure l is a front elevation ot' the-bed 1n its closed or compact form.
Fig. 2 is an end view ot' the form of the bed shown in Fig. l.
F ig. 3 is an elevation, partly broken away, of the bed drawn out, extended or made ready for service.
Fig. 4 shows the bed partly pushed together or restored to its Figs. l and 2 position. Y
Fig. 5 is an enlarged section of a broken away upper part portion ot' one of the series o' substantially identical outer legs to which the bed-bottom clamps are pivoted, taken substantially on the line 5-5 on Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is a section on an enlarged scale taken substantially on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 'f' is a section on an enlarged scale taken subitantially on the line .T-i' of Fig. of a broken away portion ot the clamp bars 2O and 21.
The ser ral views illustrate a simple and Specification of Letters Patent.

shown), pivoted to corresponding series of outer legs 3. The inner member at the foot end of the bed is designated separately by the numeral 4, being distinguished from the intermediate inner members in that it is longer than the latter, and with its companion member 4 carries a cross bar and clamp that engages the foot end of a bed bottom 5 which may be a sheet of canvas, woven `wire, or other suitably flexible material. Each of the outer members at the head end of the bed is designated by the nun eral G.' The members G are longer than the members 3, being' extended in length to support the pillow portion or pillow sup- .ort at the customary inclination or elevation. rEhe members 3 carry the supports for the side edges of the bed; the members 4 support the foot end; the members 6 support the head end of the bed and the members 2 are free of bed-bottom attach- The outer legs attached to the inner legs 4 are separately designated by the numeral i'. The leg' 7 is pivoted at 8 and 9 to legs 2 and 4, respectively and each of the legs 3 is pivoted at l0, l1 and l2 to three inner legs 2. The legs 6 are each pivoted at 13 and 14 to two inner legs 2.
rille outer legs 3 and 6 support the side edges ot the bed bottom 5 through a'series of clamps each ot which consists of a pair ot members l5 and 16 that are secured to each other by screws or bolts 17 and are supported pivotally upon a screw, bolt or pivot 18 which passes' through a bore in the member l5 and has, in the present embodiment, a head i9 that is countersunk into the inner face ot' said member l5, as shown in Figs. l and 5.
The upper ends ot the members 3 and 5 are beveled parallel to the bed bottom when the bed is extended as in Fig'. The members 4 at the toot-end oi' the bed are connected at theirupper ends by a combination bed-bottom clamp 'and cross bar or brace that consists ot a pair ot bars 2() and 2l that, like the smaller side clamps, are seeuredor drawn toward each other by screws or bolts 22 and clamp therebetween the foot end edge ofV the bed bottom 5, as, shown in Figs. 2, 3 and-4. Sections ot the' side edges ot the bed bottom 5 are in like manner clamped between the members l5 and 16. Each of the inner legs 2 is connected with its companion member 2 at the opposite side of the bed by an upper cross bar 23 fl C) and a lower cross bar 24, the ends of which may be secured to said inner legs in any suitable manner, or by a mortise and tenen joint suggested by dotted lines in F ig. 1.V
sidewise angular movement of the Outer and inner legs. These connections between the inner legs may be varied in numerous ways, preferably to the end of leaving` packing space below the folded bed bottom as shown in Fig. 1. The upper ends of the elongated outer legs 6 are beveled as at 25V and said upper ends are hinged at each side-at 26 and 2T to a pillow frame, board or support 2S. The side clamp members 15 and 16 lie upon and parallel with the legs 3 and 6, as indicated in Figs. 2 and el, when the bed is closed he pillow portion 28 is, when the bed is thus closed, folded over and upon the legs and may be hooked, tied, or otherwise secured to the cross bar and clamp 20, 21 and be provided with a carrying handle if desired. The pillow portion thus turned over as a cover may well serve as a seat or table when the bed is not in use. The legs, braces and clamps are, when the bed is closed, stacked compactly upon each other and in such a manner as to provide soaces or compartments 29, 30 and 31, as indicated in Fig. 1, which are approximately two-thirds of the area included 4within the outer boundary lines of the folded or closed bed. These spaces may be varied as to size relative to each other and as toV number by any desired rearrangement of cross-bars between the legs 2 at opposite sides. and are adapted to receive'pillows and bed covers, or such articles as are usually carried in a travlers bag or case. If the height of the bed is reduced in height to occupy the vertical dimension of an ordinary suit case, say, Jfourteen or fifteen inches, there will still be ample room for a lightbed cover and pillow, as the folded bed bottom 5 when made of canvas requires but a small amount of space. VThe headend of this bed bottom is shown tacked onto the board 28, 32 indicating the fastenings.
As shown in Fig. 3 the side- clamps 15, 16 for the side-edges of the bed bottom or sheet 5 are limited in length to leave spaces therebetween suliicient to facilitate said clamps assuming the angular relations shown in Fig. 4 which represent either l Y A,
of the sheet between the Clamp 0n @h leg '7 and the leg l depressing` the end of the clamp directed toward said leg l thereby elevating'the opposite end and therewith the end adjacent to said opposite end of the clamp on the leg 3 which Ais adjacent to the leg 7, and so on. 'The opening and closing; of the betL is therefore practically an instantaneous operation `free from the requirement of manipulations which would be involved if the bed bottom and side clamps required a series of individual adjustments to form the Zig-Zag folding of the parts upon caen other. Y
l claim as my invention- 1. The combination of a series of legs arranged substantially parallel to each other for each side of a bed, y,another similar series of legs which are pivoted to and cross the first mentioned legs, a series of bed bottom clamps pivoted on the latter and cngageable with the side edges of a. bed bottom., fastening means for the endfedges of said bed bottom, and a bed-bottom carried by said listenin@- means and legs.
2. The combination 'with a flexible bed bottom, of a plurality of substantially rigid frames arranged transversely of said bed bottom, a plurality of bed bottom supporting legs pivoted to opposite sides of said l"rames, a bed bottom clamp pivoted to each of said legs and engaging sections of the side edges of said bed bottom, a pillen portion nivoted to two of said legs and supporting the head portion of said bed bottom, and means on one of said frames which support the foot end portion of said bed bottom.
3. The combination with a flexible be bottom, of a series of relatively movable clamp members, a series of legs upon which said` clamp members are mounted, said clamp members engaging side portions of said bed bottom, means engaging the head and the foot portions of said bedbottom mounted on the legs at the head and foot of said bed, and connections between said legs on which the latter are movable to lie compactly upon each other or to assume eX- tended or spaced apart relations.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
GUSTAF yL. FINSTROM.
