IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR CRUSHING. GRINDING, AND MIXING MOLDING-SANILKtc.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,721, dated March 11, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J EAN OOTAVE HANorIN, of Paris, France, have invented certain Improvements in Machinery for Orushin g, Grinding, and Mixing Molding- Sand and other substances, of which the following is a specification:
The first part of my invention relates to the combination, with the ordinary crushing-mills, of two vertical, grooved, and multiple crushers, made either of metal or granite, each crusher. consisting of four or more conical-toothed stones or metal slabs, made in a single piece or united by bolts, and provided with grooves, the salient parts forming the conical teeth, which, in turning in the sand,'form furrows. The two crushers are arranged loose on a vertical shaft in such a manner that, in turning, the furrows made by one crusher are again divided by the second while rotating. The object of this part of my invention is to prevent the sand forming into rolls (as is the case in the ordinary crushing and mixing mills) 'and not getting properly reduced. As the crushers are very large the speed at their circumference is much greater than in the center, thereby producing a continual friction, the object being to reduce the particles into paste without the necessity of first drying the sand.
The second part of my invention relates to the combination, with the above named crushers, of two conical-toothed scrapers, mounted on the vertical shaft bearing the crushers; the object being to keep the teeth of the crushers clear of sand and prevent the clogging ofthe grooves. These scrapers are placed in front of each crusher and following the direction they take in turning.
Figure l is an elevation of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
A A are the two crushers in cast-iron or granite, which rest on a basin or circular trough B, also in cast-iron, supportedby wood or masonry C. D is the horizontal iron shaft, on which the crushers are mounted loose, so as to turn independently of one another. This shaft Dis thicker than'wide in the middle,
and is engaged in a slide borne by the vertical shaft E, the object being to admit of the crushers always resting their natural weight on the sand, whether it is unequally placed on one side or the other. The crushers are held in position by means of keys.
Motion is communicated to the horizontal shaft D and thence to the crushers by the vertical shaft E, at the end of which is placed an eighty-eight-toothed wheel, G, governed by a pinion, H, of twenty-two teeth, keyed to the small intermediate shaft I bearing the governing-pulleys J, one of which is loose, to stop the apparatus when the sand is prepared. The lower end of the vertical shaft E is supported by the foot K, furnished with a hard brass socket and a steel block. The upper part is sustained by an ordinary bracket, L, fixed on a beam purposely arranged to receive it and the two brackets of the governing shaft I. M M are the scrapers above mentioned.
With the kind of bowl or trough B described, it is desirable to have a collector, which leads thesand always to the middle, as in the ordinary mills, as one of the crushers grazes the inside of the bowl and the other the opposite side.- On the vertical shaft E is also attached a scraper, which is raised while the machine is working, and which is lowered when the sand is sufficiently mixed, and whose object is to cause its removal through the opening N made in the bottom of the trough or bowl. When work is resumed this aperture is closed by the small sheet-iron door 0. The
speed of the shaft of the crushers is twentyfive turns a minute.
I claim as my invention- 1. In an ordinary crushing-mill, the combination of a plain bed with the conicalgrooved and multiple crushers, A A, arranged.
to operate substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the crushersA A, of the conical-toothed scrapers M M, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
