Description
STAYBOLT STR 'c TTTT E.
UNITED STATES i PATENT. orifice.
ROBERT s. MENNrn,
QF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOB TO FLANNERY BOLT CCM- PANY, OE' EITISBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
s'rnvisorfr STRUCTURE.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Ronn'r S. MENNIE, a citizen of Canada, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State oi' Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staybolt Structures; and I do hereby'declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to Which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in staybolt structures for boilers, and particularly to the features which constitute the mounting and closure for the head of a staybolt of the flexible type,-the object or my invention being to provide a bearing member for the head of the bolt, which may be made to'bear freely against the outer face of a boiler sheet and be inclosed, With the head of the bolt, by a cap or housing rigidly secured to the boiler sheet, thus obviating necessity for securing the bearing member for the bolt to the boiler sheet.
With this and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawing shows an embodiment of my invention.
1 represents an outer boiler sheet Which, Y in the present instance7 is represented as the inclined roof sheet of a heilensaid sheet having an opening 2 for the accommodation of a staybolt 3. It will be understood that the inner end of the staybolt may be secured in any suitable manner to the horizontal inner sheet, not shown.
The head 3a of the staybolt may be of such form as to present a curved or rounded face and a bearing member 4 is employed to provide a seat for the curved or rounded bolt-head. This bearing member is in the form of a sleeve having a curved seat 5 or the round head of the staybolt and said bearing member rests freely against the outer face of the boiler sheet around the bolt opening 2 in the latter. v
To adapt the sleeve or bearing member to the inclination of the roof or crown sheet and still permitthe staybolt to be disposed at right angles to the inner boiler sheet With which it is connected, the lower end of said sleeve or bearing member is beveled as at 6,

and this beveled lower end is made to conform to 4the contour of the sheet and bear freely thereon.
The bearing member 4c and the bolt head 3a are inclosed by a housing or closure 7 which surrounds said bearing member and retains the same in proper position on the Y boiler sheet and which has such form or contour as to provide a clearance 8 for the 'bolt head. The housing or closure 7 is beveled as at 9 to conform to the inclination of the boiler sheet, so that it may assume a positionA substantially in axial alinementy with the staybolt.
W'hen the parts shall have been assembled, the housing or closure 7 will be fixedly united to the boiler sheet by means of a Weld l0. This Weld surrounds the housing or closure at its edge and eifects an integral union of the same with the boiler sheet.
I have shown a tell-tale hole 11 Which terminates at its outer end Within the headed end ot' the bolt, and this tell-tale hole may extend to the inner end of the bolt to facilitate testing said bolt.
Having `fully described my invention vvhat I claim as nevv and desire Vto secure by Iletters-Patent, is
l. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having a bolt opening, of a bearing member disposed freely against the boiler sheet around said opening, a staybolt having a head mounted on said bearing member, and a closure inclosing the bearing member and bolt head and secured to the boiler sheet.
2. In a staybolt structure, the combination with a boiler sheet having a bolt opening, of a bearing member freely engaging the boiler sheet around said opening, a Vstay bolt having a head mounted in said bearing member, a housing closely encircling and engaging said bearing member and Welded to the boiler sheet, said housing having a part projecting beyond said bearing member and inclosing the headof the staybolt.
3. In a staybolt structure, the combination with an inclined boiler sheet having a bolt opening, of a bearing member having a beveled portion freely engaging said sheet around said opening and having a seat for the head of a staybolt, a staybolt having a head mounted on said seat, and a housing surrounding said bearing member and constituting a closure for the same and also for rthe bolt head, and a Weld uniting said housing to the boiler sheet. o
4. In a staybolt structure,.the combinetion with a boiler sheet having vat bolt opening7 a bearing member Seated freely on theV boiler sheetaround Said opening, a staybolt having a heed mounted on said bearing member, and a housing surrounding and engaging said bearing member and inolosing the bolt hea-d and having euch dimensions es to provide a. eleunnce for the bolt head, seid housing being welded to the boiler sheet. A
5. In `a st eybolt structure, the combina-- tion With an inclined boiler sheet having e bolt opening, of a bearing member having` Y an inclined inner end seated freelyvon said sheet around the bolt opening, a' s'taybolt having a, head mounted on said bearing member,l and V2L housing surrounding Vthe 2o bearing member and bolt head and having an inclined inner end Welded to the boiler sheet. o Y
In testimony whereof, I have signed this Speciioation inv the seribing Witnesses.
fitnesses Y GLEN E. SMITH, LoRn'rTA DEMPSEY.
