The inner end ofthe basket is. formed with an Iopen end which bearsagainst the back wall yofthe ash pit. VWhen in position the f basket fits betweenthe opposing angle bars 18 and 19 so that the basket moves with ythe -H-frarne when operated. The basket is also provided with a casting 31 suitably secured thereto, having a socket projection 32 adapted to' receive the inwardly projecting portion of the shaking lever 7 when removed from the socketed trunnions 6 kaccording to the -usual practice. The lower draft door 3 shaking of the lever 7 causes the asbestoA fall into the basket 30 which at the same time is rapidly reciprocated back and forth crosswise of the ash pit by reason of the action of the shaking lever 7 through the depending portion 25, link 26, supplemental lever 24 and lever 2l, thereby reciprocating the H-frame upon the horizontal portions of the U-bars 8 and 9 and shaking the basket and causing the iine ash to drop into the ash pit and retaining the cinders therein. As soon as the shaking operation is completed the lever 7 may be removed together with the supplemental lever24, the supplemental lever 24 and lever 7 being then separated by withdrawing the pin 28, the inwardly projecting portion of the lever 7 may be then inserted in the socket 32 after the ash pit door has been opened and the basket 30 removed, the cinders being then'dum ed yfrom the basket into the ire pit of the urnace on to the hre bed,"this operation being readily performed by reason of the inner end of the basket being left open.
From this description it will be seen that we have devised a very simple device whereby the ashes, as they are shaken from the furnace may be simultaneously sifted and the cinders separated therefrom removed and replaced in the re. If'it is found necessary to shake the cinders in the basket more than is done by the above operation the shaking `lever 7 may be removed and separated from the supplemental lever 24, the supplemental lever 24 being left in engagement with the lever 21. The lever 24 may then be operated by hand to perform this extra shaking. It has, however, been found in practice that the sifting operation performed when shaking the ygrates is sufficient to separate the cinders from the ash. i
What we claim as our invention is:
l. In a furnace, the combination with the ash pit, grate bars and shaking levers, of a supporting structure located beneath the grate bars, a shaking basket slidably supported upon the supporting structure, and a ilever mounted intermediately of its length upon the supporting structure and `connected at its inner end with the shaking basket,l an arm depending from the `shaking "lever, a supplemental lever engaging ythe lever of the shaking basket and extending through the draft opening of the ash pit,
and means for `engaging the `depending por-` tion of the shaking lever and the supple-y mental lever whereby the supplemental lever is-reciprocated by the operation of the shaking lever.
2. In a furnace, the combination with the `ash pit, grate bars and shaking levers, of
a supporting structure located beneath the grate bars, a shaking basket slidably supported upon'the supporting structure, a'
lever mounted intermediately of its length upon thesupporting structure and connected at its inner end with the shaking basket, an arm depending from the shaking lever, a supplemental lever engaging the lever of the shaking basket and extending through the draft opening of the ash pit, and a link pivotally connected at one end to the depending portion of the shaking lever and engaging the supplemental lever with l,the opposite end.
3; In a furnace, the combination with the ash pit, grate bars and shaking levers, of a supporting structure located beneath the grate bars, a shaking basket slidably supported upon the supporting structure, a supplemental lever pivotally mounted intermediately of its length upon the supporting structure and pivotally connected with the shakingbasket at its opposite end, a
supplemental lever engaging the outer Aendof the shaking basket lever and lextending through the draft door of the furnace, and having a perforation' at' its outer end, an arm depending from the grate bar shaking lever, a link pivotally connected to the lower end of such arm, a pin depending from the opposite end of the link and adapted to extend through the perforation of the supplemental lever.
4. In a furnace, a supporting structure adapted to fit within the ash pit and provided with cross bar portions, a frame comprising opposing angle bars connected together, a shaking basket fitted between the opposingangle bars, a lever pivoted at one end upon one of the cross bars of the supporting structure and pivotally connected at its opposite end to the frame holding `the shaking basket, and means extendlng through the draft door for operating the lever. i
5. In a furnace, a supporting structure adapted to fit within the ash pit and `provided with cross bars, an H-frame compris ing opposing angle bars slidably resting upon the cross bars,land a cross bar connecting the angle bars together intermediately of their length, a vlever pivotally supported upon one of the cross bars of the supporting structure 4and at the opposite Vend Ito the cross bar ofthe H-frame, and meansrextending throughthe ash pit ydoor of fthefurnace for `operatingdhe lever. 1
