Be it known that I, TRACY V. BUUKWAL# Apparatus for Chilling- Bearings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is designed to preventthe warping of articles, particularly anti-tricton bearing cones or rings, due to chilling and hardening as by plunging the heated article in a cooling fluid, and a characteristic desideratum attained is the substantial reduction, of the amount, cost and waste ot' grinding. otherwise involved.
rl`he invention has the further advantages of attaining these objects simply, rapidly and eiiiciently, with consequent economy.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of apparatus comprised in the linvention, Fig. 2 is a sectional view` ot' details of the samcincluding modifications in construction, and F ig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3X-3" of Fig. 2.
The mechanism, as illustrated, is adapted for chilling the conical bearing rings 1 and preventing them from warping. It comprises a female die 2 provided with the inverted conical aperture and seat 2 adapted for engaging the exterior of the ring 1 in conforming relation, in combination with the inverted conical plug or male die 3 adapted to enter the ring in conforming relation and communicate continuous pressure thereto during shrinking, for the purpose of maintaining its shape.
As illustrated in Fig. 1, the plug or male die 3 is provided with the grooves 3 for the circulation of the cooling fluid therethrough in contact withthe interior surface of the ring, and, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, the female die 2 is provided with the grooves 2 for the circulation of the cooling fiuid therethrough in contact with the exterior surface of the ring.
The die 2 is adapted to rest upon a platen 4 which is carried by a rod 5 fixed to a piston 6, the latter acting in a cylinder 7 against the pressure of a fluid as air coinmunicated thereto through the conduit 8.
The platen 4 is adapted to reciprocate in the cooling fluid receptacle 9 having-.an aperture 10 in the top thereof, with which they platen registers, and a rim 9 for preventing the overflow of the cooling fluid.
The platen 4 contains the passages 4 and the recess 4 connnunicating therewith, to permit the cooling fluid to flow freely therethrough and through the die mechanism holding the ring under pressure, as the platen with the ring and die mechanism are forced downwardlyr into the cooling iuid against the resistance ofthe fluid in the cylinder 7 on the piston G and as these parts are elevated by the pressure of the iiuid in this cylinder. f
lhe male die 3 is carried down by a rod 1l, manually or otherwise, as by a piston 12 ot' larger diameter than the piston 6 and actuated by finid pressure as air ina cylinder 13. The cylinder v13 contains a coiled spring 14 for retracting the piston 12 With the parts connected thereto when the air in the cylinder'is released and is provided with a conduit 15 containing a three Way valve 1.(3 connecting it with the conduit 6, for admitting and releasing motive fluid which operates the pistons, the valve admitting fluid to both cylinders to squeeze and immerse the rings and releasing the pressure in the cylinder 13 to effect the Withdrawal ot' such rings.
The article to be treated is placed hot, at the hardening temperature, in the female die and pressed therein by the male die during quenching, the pressure following the article as its shrinks with the lowering of its temperature and preventing distortion as a result of the maintenance of the pressure until cooling and shrinking are completed.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. The apparatus for chilling articles which comprises a receptacle having a top containing an aperture and a rim adapted for preventing the overfiow of liquid rising through said aperture, a platen adapted to reciprocate in said receptacle in registration with said aperture, a piston connected with said platen, a cylinder in which. said piston acts, a die supported by said platen, a second die adapted to coact with said die first named in squeezing a heated article, a piston connected with said die second named, a cylinder in which said piston second named acts, and means for reciprocating said pistons to effect the immersion of said dies and articles.
2. The apparatus for chilling conical bearing rings which comprises a female die having a conical seat, a conical male die,
one of said dies provided With grooves, a
receptaclecontaining a cooling fluid, and means for pressing said dies together against a heated ring held between them and simultaneously immersing them in said cooling Huid to chill said ring.
3. The apparatus for chillin articles which comprises a pair of dies adapted for squeezingr such articles, pistons connected with the respective. dies, one of said pistons being' of larger diameter than the other, cylinders in which the respective pistons are pressed in opposite directions, a spring for reti-acting the larger of said pistons, a 1' ceptacle for a cooling Huid, and means comprising conduits and valve, mechanism lor simultaneously supplying fluid pressure to said cylinders, pressing said dies against an article held between them and translating said dies together to immerse said article,
