DEVICE FOR ROLLING-IN TUBES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 15320.
Application filed October 16, 1916. Serial No. 126,009.
T 0 aZZ whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HEINRICH A. TH. FnnNrznL, subject of the King of Prussia, residing at Berlin, Germany, Hindersinstrasse 2, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Devices for Bolling-ln Tubes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a device for rolling in tubes.
The object of the invention is to provide a device for rolling in tubes which is so constructed that by means of uniform rollers the end of the tube is flanged simultaneously with the expanding of the body thereof whereby the end of the tube may be given any desired shape.
In the preferred form of the device according to the invention the uniformity of the rollers is obtained by differently forming the mantle. of the roller in three parts in such a manner that each end of the roller carries a conical member while the middle part is adapted to roll and form the tube. The conical members serve to give the roller the required hold upon the conical mandrel or the like without producing considerable wear by the edge-contact between mandrel and roller. The middle part of the roller therefore need not to bear against the mandrel whereby a great freedom with regard to the shape thereof is obtained.
In the accompanying drawings a section through a device according to the invention is shown by way of example.
The example illustrated is based upon the well-known tube rolling machines in which three rollers are arranged around a conical mandrel (Z located in a casing e. The rollers, of which only one is shown in the drawing, each consist of the middle part c, the inner end part 0' and the outer end part 0 The end parts 0' and 0 have 'a common generatrix which coincides with that of the mandrel (Z. The middle part is so shaped, that it not only expands the tube a in the flange b but that it produces at a a flange of cambered shape.
1. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with a conical mandrel adapted to be inserted in the end of a tube and tapering continuously from end to end and toward a point lying without the tube, and a casing surrounding the mandrel, of an expanding roller arranged in the casing and comprising longitudinally tapering end sections engaging the mandrel, the taper of said sections being reversed relatively to the taper of the mandrel, and an intermediate section shaped to simultaneously expand and flange the end of the tube engaged thereby.
2. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with a conical mandrel adapted to be partially inserted in the end of a tube, and a casing surrounding the mandrel, of an expanding roller extending within the casing and comprising longitudinally tapering end sections, said end sections being portions of a single cone engaging the mandrel, the taper of said sections being reversed relative to the taper of the mandrel, and the section having the greater diameter lying without the casing, and having an intermediate section shaped to simultaneously expand and flange the end of the tube engaged thereby.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY HASPER, ALLEN F. JENNINGS.
