Specification of Letters Patent.

To all wit-0m it may concern.
Be it known that I, UnnN F. BnLTzLnY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Hagerstown, State of Maryland, have inv ited certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Drilling and Beaming and Couutersinking, of which the following is a specification.
he invention is an improvement upon portable apparatus for drilling, reaming or countersinking and it consists of the features, combinations and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims. Attention is here directed to applicants co-pending application 287,259, new Patent #1352646, which contains generic claims for similar subject matter.

In these drawings, 1 indicates a feed foot and 2 a clamp. Both of these parts are mounted one frame bar 3 and they are designed to clamp the work piece indicated at a between them, for which purpose they are adjustably mounted on the frame bar, clamping means being provided at 4, 5, of any suitable construction for fixing these parts to the frame bar. This frame bar passes through a' bracket or support 6, which is provided with bearings at 7, 8, to receive the frame bar, and this. bracket forms the support for the motor indicated at A in dotted lines, the tool being indicated at 9 in dotted lines. The motor at its rear end is supported by a screw-threaded sleeve 10 mounted in the arm 6 of the bracket 6, said sleeve being turnable by a suitable handle 11. A rod 12, screw-threaded at 13 is mounted in the sleeve and is provided with a handle 14 whereby it may be adjusted to eject the tool 9 when desired, for which purpose the rod 12 is provided with an ejector pin 15. The front end of the motor is supported by a pivoted member 16 which is held in position by a rod 17, pivoted at 18, to the bracket and having a wing; nut
1.9 whereby the supporting member 16 may be set in the desired position. i
The bracket 5 has a recess at 20 in its lower face at a point between its bearing portions '7 and 8, the wall of this recess being substantially concentric with the frame bar In this recess and supported by the frame bar 3 is a supplemental bracket 21 carrying a cylinder 22, which bracket is fixed to the frame bar by a set screw 23 passing through the bracket and operated by a lever 24. The piston 25 of this cylinder has a piston rod 26 connected with the arm of the main bracket 6 and this piston rod has a fluid pressure conduit 28 formed therethrough with which there is connected any suitable piping for conducting fluid pressure to the conduit 28 and thence to the space 29 within the cylinder. I show a pipe 36 which is provided with any suitable coupling connections and valve means for controlling the fluid pressure.
A handle 31 is connected with the bracket so that this may be manipulated and there isan adjustable collar 32 mounted on the frame bar to form a stop for the movement of the parts. In the operation of the ap pliance the work piece having been clamped between the feed foot 1 and the clamp 2, and the tool and the motor having been properly mounted, fluid pressure is supplied the space 29 of the cylinder 22 so as to act on the piston and force some toward the right in Fig. 1, and as this piston is conuected with the arm 2? of the bracket 6, this whole bracket will be moved relative to the frame bar 3 and its feed foot and clamp so that the tool will engage the work piece and perform the drilling, countersinking or other operation thereupon.
I do not limit myself to the use of the clamp in connection with the feed foot as for some classes of work the clamp would not be needed. The drawing presented with this specification is for illustrative purpose and is not to be regarded as restrictive upon the scope of my invention which defined by the appended claims.
It will be noticed that the arrangement of the cylinder partly within the main bracket 6, which latter is provided with a recess for receiving" this cylinder makes a cinistruction which is compact in form and which occupies the minimum amount of space along the frame bar 3, and also in a lateral direction in respect to said frame bar.
By looseningthe set screw 23 the frame bar may be shifted through the cylinder bracket so as to bring the feed foot to the approximate desired position against the work piece or to present the work piece to the tool. It will be understood that the apparatus may be used for drilling parts of machinery which are too large to be clamped between the feed foot and the clamp 2 as shown in the drawing, and it may be used in connection with large stationary machine parts or frames.
V I claim as my invention:
1. In combination a drilling apparatus, a
'main frame bar, a feed foot carried thereby,
a motor and tool supporting bracket slidably mounted on the frame bar, a cylinder bracket mounted on the frame bar at a point between the ends of ;the motor supporting bracket, a cylinder carried by the cylinder bracket, a piston within the cylinder, and a piston rod connected with the motor supporting bracket, substantially as described.
2. In combination a main frame bar, a feed foot thereon, a bracket for supporting the motor and tool slidably mounted on the frame bar and extending laterally therefrom a cylinder bracket fixed to the frame bar and extending laterally therefrom in the opposite direction from the motor supporting bracket and located between the plane of the ends of the motor supporting bracket and a piston within the said cylinder connected with the motor supporting bracket, substantially as described.
3. In combination a main frame bar, a feed foot thereon, a main bracket for supporting the motor and tool slidably mounted on the frame bar, and having a recessed central portion, a cylinder bracket mounted on the frame bar and extending into the recessed portion of the main bracket and a piston within the cylinder connected with the main motor supporting bracket, substantially as described.

In combination with a main frame bar, a feed foot thereon, a main motor supporting bracket, slidably mounted on the frame bar, and having end bearings with a recess between the said end bearings, the wall of which is substantially concentric with the frame bar, a cylinder having a frame portion fixed to the frame bar within the recess of the main bracket and between the end bearings thereof, a piston in the cylinder, an arm on the main bracket and a piston rod connecting the said arm with the piston, substantially as described.
