souri, have invented a certain new and useful 7 Improvement in Sanitary Cushioned Bed Vessels, of which the following is a complete specification.

T he present invention relates to sanitary bed vessels, and aims to. provide an improved device adapted for use by invalids or children, the device serving as a sanitary means for protecting the bed clothing.

Accordingly I have provided an improved article of this character which serves the function of the ordinary bed pan, but with greater comfort to the user, the device comprising an inflatable cushioning element with "a flexible bed vessel structure associated therewith, together with a waste receptacle suitably connected to the vessel and convenient and comfortable means for holding the device in its proper position while in use.

lVith this general object in View, the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing illustrating a construction which has been devised for embodying the improvement, after which the novel features therein will be defined in the ap oended claims.

Referring to the drawing in detail, this illustrates the improved device as comprising an inflatable cushion element 4 of substantially U-shaped outline and provided with a nipple 6 for inflating purposes. The inner periphery of the cushion 4 is formed with a flexible lip 8 for suitable connection,

. as by stitching 10, to a similar flexible lip 1 formed on the outer margin of a bed vessel 14 which is made of any appropriate flexible and waterproof material, such as rubberized fabric; by means of this mode of attachment the vessel 14 is thus flexibly suspended within the U-shaped cushion 1 when the latter is inflated, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. Atthe front of the vessel 14, the same is provided with a flexible tube 16 of any desired length, leading to a waste receptacle 18 located on the floor or at any convenient point below the level of the bed.

The vessel 14 is also formed with a tapered apron extension 20, preferably in one piece 1 with the material forming the vessel, the apron being adapted to be folded backward into position overlying the vessel 14, for the purpose of passing between 1 the legs ofthe patient and up over the abdomen. The flexible lip 12 is extended on past the ends of the cushion 4; part way along the sides of the apron, so that these extended portions of the said lip are folded back along with the apron, when the device is in position for use, thus serving to prevent any leakage out over the front corners of the vessel.

The free end of the apron 20 is provided with a pair of fastening elements 22 adapted to connect the end of the apron detachably to the ends of an elastic belt 24 which is provided with. the fastening elements 26; the belt 2 1 is designed. to pass around the waist of the patient, and is also provided with an elastic piece 28 attached to a flap 30 at the rear of the cushion 4.

It is thus apparent that I have provided a neat and simple as well as inexpensive type of construction for efliciently carrying out the desired object of the invention. The cushion forms a comfortable support for the user of the device, and the flexible formof vessel 14 adds further to the comfortable character of the device by being suspended flexibly within the cushion when the latter is inflated for use, the vessel serving as a sanitary means for completely protecting the bedding, and the waste matter being collected and discharged through the tube 16 to the receptacle 18. The lip 12 of the vessel forms a gutter acting as a retaining wall around the rear and both sides of the vessel, and when the apron 20 is folded backward, this obviouslv closes the front of the vessel, and the folding backward of the front extensions of the lip 12 likewise seals the front corners of the vessel against any leakage. The device is quickly and conveniently applied in position for use, in which position the same is retained in a comfortable manner by the elastic belt 24: and its connections to the apron and cushion 4:.

While I have shown and described what I regard as the preferred form of embodiment of the improvement, I desire to reserve the right to make such formal changes or modifications as may-fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.

I aving described the invention, what I claim is: v

1.. An article of the character described comprising a substantially U-shaped inflat-' vided with a tube communicating with said vessel.-

2. An article of the character described comprising. a substantially U-shaped inflatable cushion provided with a flexible lip extending around the inner periphery thereof, a flexible bed vessel secured to said lip and flexibly suspended thereby within the cushion and in substantially the same plane as said cushion when the latter is inflated, and a waste receptacle provided with atube communicating with said vessel.

An article of the character described comprisinga substantially U-shaped inflatable cushion, a bed vessel provided with a flexible lip attached to the inner periphery of said cushion and flexibly suspending the vessel within the cushion when the latter is inflated, said vessel being formed with a flexible apron adapted to be folded backward in position overlying said vessel and said flexible lip being formed with extensions projecting past the ends of the cushion part way along the sides of said apron, and a waste receptacle provided with a tube communicating with said vessel.

4. An article of the character described comprising a substantially U-shaped inflatable cushion, a bed vessel inclosed by said cushion and flexibly suspended therefrom, said vessel being provided with a flexible apron adapted to be folded backward in position overlying said vessel, a waist belt adapted to be connected to the free end of said apron and provided with an elastic connection to said cushion, and a waste receptacle provided with a tube communicating with said vessel.
