Be itknown that I, JAMES R. BERARDY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Brookl n, in the city of New'York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grating-Machines, of which the following is a description.

The present invention relates to improvements in grating machines, and more especially a machine for grating cheese, nutmegs or the like.

An object of the invention is to provide a machine of this character which will be convenient to operate, efficient and reliable in use, and may be maintained in a thoroughly clean and sanitary state.

A further object is to enable the auto matic holding and grinding of the material to be ground, when the same becomes too small to be conveniently held in the hands.

It is also proposed to provide a machine of this character which will be relatively compact in size, so that the same will afford a convenient culinary accessory.

WVith these and other objects in view, an embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, and this embodiment will be hereinafter more fully described with reference thereto, and the invention will be finally pointed out and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, the embodiment of my invention shown therein comprises a cabinet 10 formed of wood in the embodiment illustrated, but which may be of metal or any other suitable material, a sliding and removable cover 11 being provided at its upper open side, said cover being provided along the three sides with tongues 11 engaging grooves 11 in the upper portion of the cabinet.

This construction is adapted to provide 1 a very close fit, so that. any odor from the contents, such as cheese, will not permeate the room when the machine is not in use.

The front wall of the cabinet is provided at its upper portion with a panel 12, removable by means of screws 18 and 1a, and at its lower portion with an opening 15, through which a drawer 16 is adapted to slide, the front panel 17 of the drawer being flush and closing the front wall in the fully pushed-in position of the drawer. The drawer rests upon the base of the cabinet, and is guided along its upper sides by strips 18, beveled at their upper sides, and overhanging the inner edges of the side walls of the drawer, so that the particles of ground material will be guided into the drawer, and will not lodge upon the strips or upon the upper surfaces of the sides of the drawer.

Above the drawer there is provided longitudinally of the cabinet, a shaft 19 journaled at its rear end in a socket fixture 20, secured upon the rear wall of the cabinet, and at its forward end in a socket 21 of a plate 22, secured to the inner side of the front wall, the said ends also extending into a socket 23, formed in the said front wall, and of greater depth than the socket 21, the shaft terminating inwardly of a face plate 24, having an opening 25 therein for the insertion of a handle. The open upper end of the socket 23 is closed by the panel 12, the shaft being removable together with the drums, carried thereby, and presently to be referred to, when the panel is removed. Upon the shaft there are mounted two grating drums, the smaller and forward drum eing especially for the grating of nutmegs or the like, while the larger drum is for the grating of cheese or the like. The smaller drum comprises a solid wooden form 26, of cylindrical shape, incased in a thin metal covering 27, at its ends, and cylindrical surface, an outer sleeve 28 having prongs 29 struck up therefrom, being provided over the cylindrical surface. The drum is held upon the shaft by nuts 30 and 31, provided upon a threaded portion 32 of the shaft. The larger drum is similarly formed, comprising a wooden form 34, a thin metallic covering 35 incasing the cylindrical surface and the ends, and a cylindrical sleeve 36 having prongs 37, preferably not so fine as the prongs of the smaller drum, being provided on the cylindrical surface. At the rear end of the drum there is also provided a plate 38 having prongs 39, this end being spaced from the rear end of the cabinet.

, The drum is held in place upon the shaft the shaft 19 is disposed.

Above the shaft 19 and rearwardly of the larger drum there is provided a shelf 45 mounted upon supporting strips 46 and 47, and removably secured in place by screws 48 and 49, disposed diagonally and screwed into the side walls of the cabinet. A recess 50 is provided in the'shelf 45, open at its forward side and closed at its other three sides by side wall portions 51 and 52 and a rear wall portion 53, and within the recess there is provided a plunger 54 guided at its sides by projections 55 and 56, engaging grooves 57 and 58 in the side walls 51 and 52; guide rods 59 and 60 being provided upon the plunger, engaging passages 61 and 62 in the rear wall 54, and having springs 63 and 64 thereon, adapted to force the plunger forwardly, but of such length that the plunger will not engage the, surface of the drum.

When itis desired to use the machine, the cover 11 is removed, and a handle 65, having a screw threaded hole 66 in its hub portion 67 is engaged with the screw threaded end of the shaft 19 through the hole 25 of the plate 24. When not in use this handle may be conveniently placed in the drawer. The cheese or other material to be ground is held upon the drum against one of the side walls of the cabinet, and thereupon the drum is rotated by means of the handle 65, causing the cheese to be grated and drop into the section of the drawer provided therefor. When one does not care to hold the cheese against the drum, or when it becomes too small to conveniently hold, the same may be placed against the rear pronged surface of the drum, and yieldably held by means of the plunger 54; Nutmeg or other material may be ground upon the smaller drum without the particles commingling with the particles of material ground by the larger drum, the partition 43 guiding the particles into the particular section of the drawer provided therefor. The cylindrical surface is especially intended for grating of large pieces of cheese or the like, while the end surface of the drum in coiiperation with the plunger, is for automatically grinding small pieces without the necessity of holding the same with the hand. It will be understood that I may employ only one grating drum,

or if desired, I may provide more than two in such cases where one has occasion to grate various substances.

From the foregoing description, it will be seen that the means which I have provided for yieldingly urging the material being grated against the disintegrating means on the end of the rotating cylinder is wholly inclosed within the cabinet or container. Also, it is to be noted that by the removal of the screws 48 and 49 this means can be readily removed from the container inde pendently of the cylinder, while said cylinder, with its operating shaft, can then like- ,wise be removed from the container by first detaching and removing the panel 12.

I have illustrated and described a. preferred and satisfactory embodiment of my invention, but it is obvious that changes may be made therein within the spirit and scope thereof, as defined in the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A grating machine comprising an upright casing or container, and a division wall therein constructed so as to divide the upper interior portion of the container into a plurality of compartments, a receptacle slidably fitted in the lower portionof the container and interiorly divided into a plurality of compartments in communication with the compartments of the container, a plurality of rotatable grating cylinders disposed in the compartments of the casing and directly above the compartments of the receptacle, and supported by the division wall.

2. A grating machine comprising an upright casing or container, a horizontally disposed, rotatable cylinder mounted within the container, and having disintegrating surfaces, one of which functions in the nature of the side wall of the cylinder, and the other as an end wall ofv the cylinder, and a support for material to be grated by the lastnamed disintegrating surface arranged wholly within the container and disposed in alinement with said last-named disintegrating surface, and means slidably mounted on said support and adapted'for automatically advancing material held by said support against said last named disintegrating surface.

3. In a grating machine, a container, a shaft, journals for said shaft at therespective ends of said container, one of saidjournals opening upwardly, and adapted to permit said shaft tobe lifted therefrom, a removable panel adapted to be disposed over said last-mentioned journal to close the same, a grating drum mounted on said shaft, and a receptacle below said grating drum adapted to receive the material.
