To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MiLoN J. TRUMBLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alhambra, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Steam-Boiler, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to steam boilers, and more particularly to steam boilers which are adapted to be used in automobiles or other vehicles.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a steam boiler which will be very light in weight and which will be very strong in proportion to its weight. Further objects and advantages will be made evident hereinafter.
Referring to the drawings which are for illustrative purposes only,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a section 011 line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the stay rivets.
In the form of the invention illustrated in the drawing, a fire box 11 is provided having a burner 12 in the bottom thereof and a flue 13 in the top. Secured inside the fire box 11 is a cylindrical jacket 15 and secured inside this jacket in spaced relationship therewith is a shell 16. The jacket 15 and shell 16 are secured to an outer an nular head 17 at the top and bottom thereof, the jacket and shell being welded thereto, and the ends of the space inside the shell being closed by heads 18 also welded in place. Rigidly secured between the shell 16 and the jacket 15 at frequent intervals are rivets 20; these rivets having the form shown in Fig. 3 and consisting of a central portion 21 and ends 22 of smaller diameter. These rivets are secured in drilled holes in the shell 16 and jacket 15 and are riveted over and welded. It will be noted that the mem bers 15, 16 and 17 form a rigid and extremely strong member when complete, and that the members 20 form heat conducting members assisting in delivering the heat of combustion to the water as will hereinafter be explained.
Located inside the shell 16 are four induction tubes 30, these tubes being connected into the space between the shell 16 and the jacket 15, hereinafter called the preheating space, and extending downwardly to a point near the bottom head 18. Secured in the head 18 in gas tight relationship there with are fire tubes 81. A water pipe 33 is connected into the space between the shell 16 and the jacket 15 and a steam outlet pi 35 is connected into the top of the boiler, being secured in gas tight relationship in the head 18. lVater being delivered through the pipe 38 passes upwardly between the shell 16 and the jacket 15, being heated by its contact with the jacket 15 which in turn is heated by the hot gas delivered by the burners 12. As previously explained, the rivets 20 serve to conduct heat from the jacket 15 and deliver it to the water. This water is finally delivered through the induction tubes 30 to the bottom of the boiler near the header 18. The hot gases of combustion also pass upwardly through the fire tubes 31, being taken oil through the flue 13, the body of water and steam around the tubes 81 being heated by these hot gases. Steam is drawn 011' through the pipe 35 and delivered to any type of engine to which the inventor desires to connect it.
I claim as my invention:
A steam boiler comprising a jacket; a cylindrical shell concentrically located inside said jacket; rivets radially placed and connecting and staying said jacket and shell together; annular heads closing the ends of the space between the shell and the jacket; means for introducing water into said space; circular heads closing the cylindrical steam space inside said shell; fire tubes passing through said cylindrical steam space parallel to the axis of said space; an induction tube connected into the top of the space between said shell and said jacket and delivering fluid to the bottom of the steam space and means for withdrawing steam from said space.
