POTATO GRINDER. APPLICATION FILED IuL'Y 24,19Is.

OZM'S Eeri 3mm/woz l VCA v @lum/aga LOUIS BERK, 0F ALSTOWN, WASHINGTON.
POTATO-GRINDER.,
Application filed July 24,
To all whom it may concern: n
Be it known that I, LoUIs Bunn, a citizen of the United States residing at Alstowinin the county of Douglas and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Potato-Grinders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable other skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in potato grinders or graters.V
The principal objectof the invention is to vprovide a device of the above mentioned character which is simple in construction, strong, durable and inexpensive to manufacture.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character stated which can readily be taken apart for purposes of cleaning and repairing, etc.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of the device.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration, is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates an approximately cylindrical casing provided at its upper side with a hopper 2 and at its lower side with an outlet opening 3. Preferably cast integral with, and extending-downwardly from one end of the casing, is a standard or supporting leg 4 which is provided at its end with a suitable` clamp 5, which is adapted to be attached to a table or other support 6.
Vithin the casing 1 is a'hollow drum or cylinder 7, which may be made ofiany suitable material, such as for example, wood or metal. This drum is slightly shorter than the length of the casing 1 and is adapted to be rotated in said casing. Extending longitudinally from end to end along the outer surface of the drum 7 are grooves 8, disposed at points opposite each other. On the drum or cylinder 7 is fitted a sheet metal grinding or grating cylinder 9, provided Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. '7, 1920.
1919. Serial No. 313,099.
with rating teeth or perforations 10 which are a aptedy to be brought into contact with the article to be grated or ground. At points opposite each other on the cylinder 9 and extending longitudinally and entirely across the interior of the grating cylinder are keys or ribs 11 which are adapted to enter the recesses 8 of the drum 7 and thereby retain said cylinder on the drum. As shown, the keys or ribs l1 are preferably formed by stamping the metal cylinder inwardly.
In order to rotate and properly support the cylinder and drum in the casing 1, ploy a crank-handle l2 and a shaft 13. The shaft is preferably square for the greater part of its length and extends through, and is seated in square openings 14 in the opposite heads of the hollow cylinder or drum'l 7. The opposite ends 15 of the shaft are round and are journaled through bearing openings in the opposite ends of the casing 1. The outer end 16. of the shaft is reduced and threaded to engage a winged nut, which is adapted to hold the parts together as shown. y
It should be noted that the hopper 2 of the casing is wide enough to permit easy removal of the grating cylinder therethrough.
As shown, one of the sides of the casing 1 is concentric with the axis of the drum 7 and is adjacent to the outer surface of the drum, and the other side of the casing converges from its top toward its bottom and is spaced from the surface of the drum to form a tapered passage 17. Therefore, when the vegetables to be ground are placed in the hopper 2, they are fed by the rotating cylinder toward the tapered passage 17 and down through the same, being ground liner as they reach the outlet 3.
When it is desired to remove the grating c linder from the casin for purposes of c eaning, etc., it will on y be necessary to remove the shaft 13 from the grating cylinder and drum, thus leaving the grating cylinder free to be taken out through the hopper 2. It is.obvious that any and all vegetables may be equally well round with my grater, and that it is not to e restricted for use in grinding potatoes.
The grating perforations or teeth will be arranged fine or coarse or in any other suitable manner, as may be required for different purposes.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herein shown and described is to be taken as a preferred embodiment of the same, and that various changes in the shape, Size and arrangement-of parte may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
A grinder comprising a casing having curved side Walls merging into a rounded bot-tom provided With a longitudinally eX- tending outlet, the upper portions of the side walls being bent outwardly to provide a wide inlet mouth and a hopper extending upwardly therefrom, a cylinder extending side Wall of the easing extending in diverg-Y ing relation to the cylinder on the arc of a circle eccentric tothe drum and iii-st side Wall of the casing, and a vremovable turning shaft journaled in the casing Walls and extending longitudinally throughvthe casing and drum. n
In testimony whereof I have hereuntoset my hand.
LOUIS BERK.
