Inuenfor DouglasFTFesler .citizen of the United States, residin UNITED sTA es PATENT OFFICE.
DOUGLAS F. FESLER, 0F EVANSTON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOB, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE BASSIGK MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
LUBEICATING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 7, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DOUGLAS F. FESLER, i
a Evanston, in the county of Cook and tate of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lubricating Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in lubricating apparatus and is especially concerned with improvements in that type of lubricating apparatus wherein each bearing of the machine to be lubricated is provided with a lubricant receiving ni plo comprising means for establishing a etacliable connection with a source of lubricant under pressure, so that lubricant under high pressure can be forced into the nipple.
The objects of my invention are-- First; to provide a cap for nipples of inbricating system, such as described above, for excluding dirt, dust and moisture from the interior of the nipple and for protecting the spring-pressed closure thereof.
'Second; to provide a closure of the character described so constructed that it can be easily attached to and detached from the ni ple.
hird; to provide a cap of the character described, comprisin means for yieldingly holdingthe cap against inovrrnent longitudinally of the nipple in either direction and thereby preventing the cap from rattling on the nipple, and
Fourth; to provide a cap of the character described which is sim le in construction and economical to menu acture.
Other objects will appear as this description progresses, reference being had to the accompanying drawingsfln which- Figure l is a side elevation of my linproved oap. Fig. 2 isa side elevation of my improved ca showing it applied to a nipple.
*ig. 3 is a. central longitudi al Section through my improved cap showing it positioned on a nipple which is shownin side elevation, and I Fig. 4 is an enlar edside elevation of my improved cap, and t e nipple, with which t co-acts, portions of .the cap and nipple beingbrokenaway.
Throughout e severalviews similar ref- :uu adapted to receive t pie and produoingwalisugmeab lheslot.extends inwardly beyond the re,
erence characters will be used for referring to similar parts.
Referring to the drawings, reference character 5 indicates the end member of my improved cap, which is shown as being prov ded with a concave-convex boss 6, to provide a clearance space between the end memher and the spring-pressed closure 7 of the nipple.
' l he details of construction of the nipple 8 form no part of my invention, except in so far as these details co-uct with certain elements of my improved cap.
The details of construction of the nipple illustrated herein are clearly disclosed in the patent of Arthur V. Gullborg No. 1,307,733 and will not be described further except to state I make use of the ends 9 of the pin extending through the nipple for securing my cap thereto. A flange 10 depends from the edge of the end member 5 and is provided with a pair of outwardly flaring slots 11, dis iosed diametrically opposite to each other ie ends 9 of the pin extending through the nipple.
At a point intermediate the ends of the slot, the edges thereof are recessed as shown at 12 to provide a locking seat, or rather a pair of locking seats for the ends 9 of the pin, extending through the nipple.
Referring to Fig. 4, it will be noted that the recesses 12 are curved on a diameter slightly less than the diameter of the end 9 of the pin extending through the nipple, thereby providing two points of contact 13 on each side of the pin. It will also be noted that the width of the slot between the recesses l2 and the outer end of the slot is less than the diameter of the pin. This means that when the cup is forced over the end of the nipple, the edges of the slot uresprung away from cur-h other until the pin lies between the recesses 12 whereupon the edges spring toward ouch other and the pin is yieldingly confined against longitudinal movement in either direction between the points of contact Ill. There is, therefore, no' possibility of the cup-rattling upon the nipe sound,
oesses l2 and its inner end is circularly enlarged, usishown at 14. llythus extending the slot, I provide a mnstruction which is loss rigid and more yit'ldablo than if the slot should end at the inner ends of the reof said pin.
cesses 12, thus making it easier to attach and detach the cap from the nipple.
It will be noted from an inspection of Fig. 3 that the space between the recesses 12 and the end iece of the cap is such that the end cap is he id in spaced relation to the end of the nip 1e. As a result of this construction there is no danger of the end cap hearing against the closure 7 and there is no necessity for accurate machining of the cap 7 to permit the points 13 to contact properly with the in. v
While have described the details of the preferred construction of n1 improved cap, it is to be clearly understoor that my invention is'not limited to these details, but is capable of other adaptations and modifications within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim IS 1. The combination with a cylindrical nhple, having a pin projecting from one side thereof, of a cap for said nipple coznprising an end piece and means in! holding said end piece spaced from the end ofsaid nipple comprising a flange depending from the edge, of said end piecc, and provided with an outwardly liarin slat opening through the edges thereof. the edges of said slot at a point intcrnu-diate the ends thereof being recessed on a diameter less than the. diameter of said pin to provide a pair of spaced points of contact on opposite sides of said pin, the inner end of said slot being circularly enlarged.
A. The combination with a pvlindrical nipple, having'a pin projecting from one side thereof, of a cap for said nipple com prising an end piece and means for hold ng said end piece spaced from the end of said nipple comprisin' a flange depending from the cdglc of suit cnd piece, and provided with an' outwardly iiarin slot opening through the edges tbclcof, he edges of said slot at a point intermm-liate the tlhiH th'ercoi' being recessed on a diameter less than the diameter of said pin to provide a pair of spaced points ot' contact-on opposite sides 3. The combination with a cylindrical ni )ple, having a pin projecting from one sir e thereof, of a cap for said nipple comprising an end piece and means for holding said end piece spaced from the. end ofs'aid nipple comprising a flange. depending from the edge of said end piece and provided with a slot opening through the edges thereof,
the edges of said slot at a point intermediate the ends thereof being recessed on a diameter less than the diameter of said pm to' provide a pair of'spaced points of contact on opposite sides of said pini ,4. The combination with a cylindrical nipple, having a i )in projecting from one,
