Description

' A. HUFFER.
Blind-Hinges.
No, 136,061, Patented Feb.18,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIoE.
ABRAHAM HUFFER, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNO'R TO MAURICE H. MERRIMAN, ()F SAME PLACE.
lMPROVEMENT IN BLIND-HINGES.
Specification. forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,061, dated February 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I ABRAHAM HUFFER, of the city of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Surface BlindJ-Iinges; and I do hereby declare that the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same.
My invention consists in combining with a surface blind-hinge provided with a spring, such as is described and shown in my patent of October 11, 1870, a projecting bearing for the attachment of said spring, as hereinafter described.
In the drawing, Figure l is a perspective view of my improvement as adapted to brick buildings; Fig. 2, a similar View of the hinge as adapted to wood buildings; Fig. 8, a plan of Fig. 2.
This hinge is a surface-hinge, screwing directly outside the wood, instead of being mortised in as in my patent of October 11, 1870. Fig. 1 shows a left-hand hinge, and Fig. 2 a right-hand hinge.
The hinge is made of two parts, A and B, as usual, A being the stationary part carrying the pintle a, and B the swinging part carrying the socket b. The leaves of the hinge are at right angles to the arms (1 cl, which carry the pintle and socket, and are made of difl'erent lengths, according as the hing s are to be used on brick or wood buildings. The socket b has the cam-head 9 provided with the cams h h, and against this cam-head bears the flat spring D consisting of one or more leaves, as is described and shown in my aforesaid patent. The construction and operation of the cam and spring are the same as in that patent. The base of the spring is riveted or otherwise attached to a bearin g, G, which stands at right angles to, and is connected with, the leaf of the sta- Y tionary part of the hinge.
My present invention consists in the employment of the right-angled bearing-plate G, in combination-with the hinge and the spring, by which means the device is made a surfacehinge, and can be attached to brick walls as well as wood. In this respect it differs from my patent to which I have before referred, that being simply a mortise-hinge and capable of application only to wood buildings. By the use of the. plate 0 I can make it a surface hinge,.and the plate is specially intended for the attachment of the flat spring D, and for no other use. I cla-nn it, therefore, only in con:
nection with this spring. In its application to wood buildings the bearing 0 may be set flush into the wood-work, as shown in Fig. 3. The hearing has, preferably, two flanges, ff, for keeping the spring in place. P
Having thus described my invention, I do not claim, broadly, a surface blind-hinge; nor do I claim, here, a cam and spring for holding a blind, as that is embodied in my former patcut; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters'Patent, is-
In a surface-hinge, the combination of the stationary part A with the bearing-plate O at right anglesto it, in which is secured the flat spring D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed -my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. 1 ABRAHAM HUFFER. Witnesses:
R. F. Oseoon, WM. 0. BAINE.
