Description
L. COHEN.
AUTO BUMPER.
APPLICATION FILED AUG-23, 1920.
' 1,6O,369.. Patented Nov. 30, 1920.
, Lamb Cohen UNITED STATES LOUIS COHEN, OF J OI-IN'STOWN, NEW YORK.
AUTO-BUMPER.
Application filed August 23, 1920.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, LOUIS COHEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at J ohnstown, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Auto- Bumper, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bumpers, and more particularly to bumpers designed for use in connection with motor vehicles, it being the primary object of the invention to provide movable end sections, movable in one direction, to eliminate any possibility of the ends of the bumper being damaged" by meeting with obstructions when the motor vehicle supplied with the bumper is being backed.
A further object of the invention is the provision of resilient means for returning the movable end sections of the bumper to their normal positions after the same have encountered anobstruction.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without de arting from the spirit of the invention.
eferring to the drawing Figure 1 illustrates a plan view, partly broken away, to illustrate the interior. construction of thebumper.
Fig. 2 illustrates a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 illustrates a sectional view taken online 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to thedrawing in detail, the.
reference character 5 designates the main or body portion of the bumper, which is formed preferably of channel iron, the ends thereof being'formed at angles as at 6 to provide abutments for the inner extremities of the movable end sections 7.
Each of these movable end sections 7 is secured to the body portion 5 as by means of the hinged connections 8, which connections permit the end sections 7 to hinge forwardly, but prevent the end sections from moving rearwardly beyond a predetermined point, the inner ends of the sections 7 abutting with the outer ends of the body portion 5, to lend rigidity to the end sections to per Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 30, 1920.
Serial No. 405,249.
part of the 'bythe reference character 9, there being provided a securing bolt 10 passing through the tubular member 9 and having one end thereof secured to the front wall of the body portion 5 in a manner to retain the tubular member 9 against movement with relation to the body portion 5.
The ends of the tubular member 9 are braced against movement by *means of the plates 11, which are disposed at opposite ends of the body portion 9, there being provided bolts 12 for securing the plates 11 to the body portion, the ends of the -tubular member 9 being however disposed in spaced relation with the ends of the body portion 5.
Extending rearwardly from the body portion 5 at points adjacent to the respective ends thereof, are a pair of arms 13 disposed in spaced relation with each other, the arms being connected however by means of pivot pins 14, which pivot pins provide supports for the pivoted arms 15, the inner extremities 16 thereof being designed to contact with the plunger heads 17 of the plungers 18, which are shown as operating in the ends of the tubular member 9. a
A pair of arms indicated at .20 are carried by each of the end sections 7, which arms are connected by the shafts 21 which in turn support the rollers 22 that operate over the curved surfaces 23 of the free ends 24 of the arms 15, so that movements of the end sections 7 toward the forward portions of the bumper, cause the rollers 22 to gnove over the curved surfaces 23 to place the coiled springs 19 under tension, so that when the end sections 7 are released, the coiled springs will urge the plungers outwardly to move the end sections rearwardly to positions as indicated by Fig. 1 of the drawing.
In the operation of the device, assuming menses that a motor vehicle supplied with a bumper constructed in accordance with the present invention, is being backed from a garage, and the front wheels of the vehicle have been turned to cause the bumper to contact with the side members of the door frame, it is obvious that the end sections 7 will move outwardly, thereby relieving the bumper of the strain caused by the bumper meeting with the obstruction.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A bumper including a central body portion and movable end sections, a tubular member supported within the body portion, plungers operating in the tubular member, pivoted arms carried by the body portion and having one of their respective ends contacting with the plungers, and means carried by the movable end sections and contacting with the pivoted arms for moving the plungers in one direction.
2. A bumper including a central body portion and movable end sections, a tubular member carried by the body portion, plungers moving in the tubular member, resilient means for normally urging the plungers outwardly, and means pivotally supported adjacent to the ends of the body portion and contacting with the plungers and movable end sections for forcing the movable end sections to their normal positions.
3. A bumper including a central body portion and movable end sections, a tubular member supported by the body portion, a'plunger operating in each end of the tubular member, a pair of arms disposed adjacent to each end of the body portion, a pivoted arm carried by the first mentioned arms, the inner extremities of the pivoted arms contacting with the plungers, each of the pivoted arms having a curved surface, and means carried by each end section and contacting with the curved surfaces for moving the plungers Within the tubular member. v
at. A bumper including a central body portion and movable end sections, a tubular member carried by the body portion, and having its ends disposed in spaced relation with the body portion, a plunger operating in each end of the tubular member, pivoted means operating at each end of the body portion and contacting with the plungers and end sections, whereby movement of the plungers produces a relative movement of the end sections.
5. A bumper including a central body portion and movable end sections, a tubular member supported within the body portion, pivoted arms carried by the body portion, each or said pivoted arms having connection with the end sections, and means movable within the plunger and contacting with the pivoted arms for normally moving the pivoted arms in one direction.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
LQUIS C HEN,
lNitnesses ALFRED D. DENNISON, EUGENE Moore.
