Description

UNITED ,STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CALEB T. FAY, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE JENISEN LUBRICATOR COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.`
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-AXLE BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,977, dated February 18, 1873.
, nest Von J enisen, bearing date April 11, 1871,
and assigned by him to the JENISEN LUBRI- oAToR COMPANY: Also, I have assigned my present invention to the said J ENIsEN LUBRI- -GATOR COMPANY, by an instrument under my hand and seal bearing even date with the application.
My invention consists mainlyin the employment of a box or reservoir constructed of thin metal, in which the oil and lubricating-pad are placed. The innerend of the box is cut away for the working ofthe axle, and a semicireular ange is fitted over the lower half of the opening of the axle-box proper. Slots are made in the side of the box so as to admit the gate or spring-board for the end of the axle, and a beveled gate shuts down upon the entire end of the axle-box, which excludes the dust and water from the interior, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
Referring to the drawing, Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section; Fig. 3, a per- Spective view of the reservoir.
A represents a rectangular box, constructed preferably of thin metal, whose sides, when in position, extend upward to the brasses or bearing of the axle'B. The inner end is cut away for about one-half the diameter of the axle, and a semicircular iiange or thin edge, C, iits over the lower half of the opening in the box proper, on which the axle plays, in which position it is held by the lugs or points C'. By this means,
the oil or lubricating material which would naturally run oft from the axle and be lost is returned intothe box to ,be drawn up again and utilized. The outer end of the reservoir extends to near the end of the axle-box, and is on a horizontal plane with its sides. Vertical slots D D are made in the sides to admit the gate or spring-board E for the end of the axle, which corresponds in width to the space between the lugs 1) of the axle-box. A closelyfitting gate, F, with circular top, shuts into the end of the axle-box, in which position it is held by a set-screw, F. When the gate is raised, it will be seen that the end of the axle-box is flush with the door, so that the oil-reservoir can be removed like a drawer. By reference to this invention it will clearly be seen that but little, if any, of the oil can escape by slopping over or otherwise, as the sides of the reservoir or lining extend up to the bearings of the axle, and the outer end is on a plane with the sides, andthe inner ends surround a sufficient portion of the axle to prevent escape in that direction.
It will also be furthermore observed that this invention is almost indispensable to the successful operation of that class of devices which depend largely upon pads held by springs to eii'ect lubrication.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The lugs or points C C for holding the box when in position, substantially as set forth.
2. The axle-box i described, having the outside case with sliding cover F, removable reservoir A having slots D D and dan ge C', and gate or spring-bearer E, all constructed and arranged as described, for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
