Description
M. L. BRANDT.
HAIR TRIMMER AND COMB THEREFOR.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. I, 1918- Patented Nov 23 192% I A 72 van for m i? fil UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAURICE L. BRANDT; OF BROOKLYN, YORK.
. Ham-TRIMMER AND coma rnnanron.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, MAURICE L. BRANDT,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough, of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hair-Trimmers and CombsTherefor, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hair trimmers and cutters of a'type which bears the same relation to the means ordinarily employed as does the safety straight razor, and by means of which son may cut and trim his own hair.
The objects of my invention are to provide a device for domestic use, which will not require any particular skill to operate, which may be used with either hand and upon either side of the head without adjustment.
Further objects are to provide a comb or guard, which will shield both sides of the cutting device, which will be securely retained in position and which will automatically free itself of hair.
A further object is to provide a handle for tonsorial cutlery which will be of such a shape as to be conveniently grasped by the hand whereby a firm hold upon the implement may be secured and by means of which the device may be suspended when not in use.
These and further objects more fully appear in the following specification and accompanying drawings considered together or separately.
I have illustrated one embodiment of my invention in the accompanying drawings in which like parts are designated by similar characters ofreference, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hair trimming device embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross .section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a similar view taken 'on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of my invention a perapplied to a straight razor, and
Fig. 5 is an end. elevation of the same.
In carrying out my invention I provide a holder provided with a handle 2. The handle is preferably of the configuratipn illustrated, having a ring 3 for the reception of the second finger, a concavity 4 to Specification of Letters Patent.
Application med March 1, 1918. Serial No.
razor to the old fashion,
one side thereof which acts as a rest for the forefinger, a similar concave portion 5 on the opposlte side of the ring for engagement by the thlrd finger, a curved tail piece 6, under which the fourth or little finger may engage, and a curved rest opposite the concavity 4 with which the thumb may engage.
The holder 1 is constructed of spring metal and is of approximately U shape havmg a bowed back and leaf portions 7, 7. The holder is open at one end to permit of the insertion of a cutting member 8.
The member 8 as illustrated is an ordinary safety razor blade of the single cutting edge and with a reinforcing element 9 secured in place opposite the cutting edge. illustrated the above described type of blade for convenience but desire to have it understood that the invention may be carried out with other styles of blades.
In connection with the elements of the device as above described I provide a comb or guard 10. The comb is secured in place over the holder and one end thereof abuts against a shoulder 11 on the handle whereby the comb will be properly positioned relatively to the longitudinal dimension of the blade 8.
The comb 8 comprises a back 12 and two depending levers 13, 13 which are disposed one on each side of the blade. The leaves extend below the cutting edge of the blade and their lower edges are spaced apart and do not contact with the blade or with each other. The lower edges of the leaves are in the form of teeth 14, as in well known ty%es of safety razor guards.
A ach leaf 13 is cut away at one or more points to form openings 15 of more or less V-shape. The material at the upper side of the openings is bent inward to form guides 16 to engage the side members 7, 7 of the holder or the cutting member as the case may be. The comb may be composed of resilient material and the engagement of the guides "16, 16 with the holder or blade will retain the comb in position. The openings 15 and the spaces between the blade and the leaves of the comb willpermit the hair severed by the blade to escape from between the blade and comb and the bent in portions 16 will deflect the severed hair to the out- Patented Nov. 23, 1920. p
and 5 in which case the parts 16 will have frictional engagement with the sides of the blade.
The comb may be made of any desired material such as metal, hard rubber, celluloid. horn, etc.
The device may be used in much the same manner as is a safety razor. The comb being always between the skin and the blade will prevent the hair from being out too short and by changing the angle of the device relativel ,to the scalp the hair may be trimmed to tie length desired.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described the principle of my paratus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the a aratus shown is merely illustrative, and that the invention may be carried out in other ways.
Having now described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the character described comprising a blade and a comb member having two leaves one on each side of the blade, there being a plurality of openings of considerable length compared with their Width in, each leaf at a distance from the edges thereof, the material of the leaves being bent inward at the upper sides of the openings to engage the sides of the blade longitudinally thereof to form guides, said guides being inclined outwardly from the blade in the direction from the edge to the back thereof.
2. A device of the character described I comprising a holder, a cutting blade seinvention, together with the ap" 3. A comb or guard for a cutting blade 4 comprising a back, two leaves extending from the back and adapted to embrace the blade, said leaves having comb teeth along one edge thereof, there being an opening in each leaf at a point removed from the teeth, said openings being oppositely disposed and of considerable length in the direction longitudinally of the device, each end of said opening extending in the direction away from the comb teeth thereby forming a tongue in each opening, the tongues being inclined inward with their edges adapted to engage the sides of the blade, the incline of the tongues tending to direct the hair, severed by the blade and forced toward the back of the blade, away from the blade and outside of the guard or comb.
This specification signed and witnessed this 28th day of February, 1918.
