IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,955, dated February 18, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN WILBUR, of Chesterton, in the county of Porter and State of Indiana, have invented. a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the'lettoward the main roll by springs at each end,

the fabric passing between the large and small rollers. The invention consists in' certain details of construction fully described herein after.

In the drawing, AArepresent the end-pieces or standards, in which is journaled a cranked shaft, B, carrying a large corrugated wooden roll, 0. In the inner face of each standard two vertical dovetail grooves, a a, are cut, and into each groove is inserted a dovetail-tongue projecting from the middle of a short segment, D. The segments at each end are coupled together by a link, b. In the segments are journaled the ends of small rollers E. F is a spiral spring secured to the lower end ofeach standard, and to the upper end of each standard is attached a bail, G, whose upper ends are attached to the middle of each segment, so as to draw both down or allow one to move up independently of the other, which is highly essential where fabrics of varying thickness are run through between the roll and rollers. H H are two round girts, mortised and projecting through the lower ends of the standards alit-tle way.
