DYEING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 16, 1920.
v Application'filed December 9, 1919. Serial No. 343,685.
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it lrnown that I, HOWARD M. DUDLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State or" Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dyeing-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to dyeing devices and refers particularly to devices suitable for the dyeing of fibers in skein form.
The even and equal dyeing of yarn skeins is difiicult to obtain in those devices in which the skeins are subjected to the action of a circulation dyeing liquid. This result is due chiefly to the difiiculty experienced in obtaining a uniform distribution of the dye ing liquid in all parts of the device at all times.
The necessity of obtaining uniform distribution is increased in those cases which are now or" most frequent occurrence in which the dye liquid consists of a number of dyestufis having different solubilities and different afiinities for the fiber. Unless the distribution is absolutely uniform under these circumstances, the dyed results will be uneven and useless.
ily device is constructed to overcome this particular difliculty and presents a means whereby the distribution of the dye liquid will be uniform throughout the entire dye ing. chamber thus producing even and uniform dyed results.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating one form of my device, similar parts are designated by similar numerals.
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic side plan view of one form of the device of my invention.
Fig. 1 is a broken view in the direction of the line 1 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the receptacle, dyeing chamber and contained parts.
Fig. 3 is a section through the line 33 of Fig. 2. I
Fig. 1 is a section through the line l"I of Fig. 3.
The particular form of the device of my invention, shown in the accompanying drawings, comprises a receptacle formed by the sides 10 and 11, the ends 12 and 13, the bottom 14 and the top 15. The sides 10 and 11 carry the angle irons 16, 16, 17, 17, and the ends 12 and 13 carry the angle irons ries of openings 25, 25. A foraminous plate 26, comprising a series of spaced parallel bars 27, 27 rests upon a flange 28 at the lower extremities of the sides 10 and 11 and the ends 12 and 13. The plate 26 and the bottom 22 form a chamber 29. A foraminous plate 30, comprising a series of spaced parallel bars 31, 31 has an outwardly eX- tended flange 32 capable of placement upon the tops of the sides 10 and 11 and the ends 12, and 13. The plate and the top 15 form a chamber 33. The top 15 has the inwardly extended baffle-plate 3-1 and the bottom 14 carries the member 35 with the baffle-plate 36.
A lower liquid chamber 37 is thus formed in the lower portion of the receptacle and an upper liquid chamber 38 is thus formed in the upper portion of the receptacle. Pipes 39, 39 are contained in opposite sides of the lower liquid chamber 37 and pipes 10, 10 are contained in opposite sides of the upper liquid chamber 38. These pipes 39, 39, 40, 40 pass entirely through the liquid chambers 37 and 38 and have a series of openings 11, 41 in their upper portions throughout their entire length within the liquid chambers. One end of each of the pipes 39, 39, a0, 4.0 is closed by a cap 12 fastened to the sides and ends of the receptacle by the screw bolts 13, 13, a tight joint being formed by the shipping box 14:. Drain pipes 415, 45, each carrying a valve 45 act as a means for drawing the liquid rom within the liquid chamber 37. A pipe 16 enters the liquid chamber 37 and a pipe 4L7 enters the liquid chamber 38.
Placeable within the'dyeing chamber is a skein holding device comprising upper side pieces 48, 18 and lower side pieces 19, 19, connected by the end pieces 50, 50. The end pieces 50, contain a series of holes 51, 51, through which retaining pins can be passed, the pins also passing through holes in the bettom pieces 49, 49, thus allowing of 48, 4-8 are connected to the foraminous pipe 60 by means of the pieces 4-8, &8 and the bottom pieces d9, 4&9
have a series of holes 52, 52 through which the skein sticks 53, 53 may be passed to support the skeins 100, 100. T he top pieces plate 30 by the links 5a, 54. p
Each of a series of members 55, 55 has an extended threaded bolt 56 capable of being screwed into holes in the upper plate '24 and the foraminous member 30. Each member 55 has link 57, into which can be inserted a broken link 58 attachesto the top 15. The top 15 has a series of eye- bolts 59, 59 for purposes of removal.
The pipes 46and connected to the three-way cock 61, the pipe 60 emptying into the reserve tank 62. A pipe 63, carrying the valve 6%, connects the reserve tank 62 with the receiving ends of the rotary pumps and 66. Each pipe a0 is connected to a pipe 67 by means of stalling boxes 68 and 69 and the two pipes 67, 67 converge into the pipe 70 which is connected to the pipe 71, carrying the valve 72, and connected with the delivery end of the pump 66.
. Each pipe 39 is connected with a pipe 73. T he two pipes 73, 73 converge into the pipe 7% which is connected to the pipe 75, carrythe valve 76 and connected with the delivery chamber of the pump 65. The pipe 71 is connected with the air pipe 77, carrying the valve 78 and the pipe 7 5 is connected with the air pipe 79 carrying the valve 80.
A pipe 81, carrying the valve 82, passing through one or the upper caps 42, enters the chamber of the testing device 83, corresponding to the chamber 38 of the larger device and a pipe 8 carrying the valve 85, passing through one of the lower caps 42, enters the chamber of the testing device 83, corresponding to chamber 37 of the larger device. The testing device 83 is exactly similar and proportionate to the larger receptacle and its contained parts.
The operation of the device is as follows i The top 15 and the skein holding device are removed and skeins 1G0, 100 placed upon the rods 53,53, the distance between the upper rods 53, 53 and the lower rods 53, 53 being such as not to cause a tension upon the fiber. The skein holding device is then attached to the member 30 and the member 30 and the plate 24 attached to each other by the screw bolts 56, 56, and the top 15 attached to the members 55, 55 by means of the links 58, 58 and the whole inserted within the dyeing chamber and the receptacle, the member 30 being supported to the sides and ends or the dyeing receptacle and the top 15 resting upon the sides and ends of the liquid thus passes from the reserve tank 62,
through the pipe 63, the pump 65, the pipes 75, 74, 7 3 and 39, 39 into the lower liquid chamber, 37, whence it passes, after distribution by the battle plate 36, through th to raminous plate 22, the chamber 29, the 0- raminous bottom 26, the dyeing chamber, the loraminous top 30, the chamber 33, the foraminous -member 24, the upper liquid chamber 38, the pipes 47 and 60 to the reserve tank 62 for continuous distribution. At the same time the liquid enters the testing device 83 through the pipeSel, passin upwardly through the members contained therein and through the pipe 81 to the liquid chamber 38.
l i hen a reverse direction of he liquid is desirous, valve 76 is closed, valve 72 is opened and the threeway cook 61 opened between the pipes 46 and 60. Pump is stopped and pump 66 is started. The liquid is thus passed downwardly through the device in an opposite direction from that described above.
l Vhen it is desired to pass air through the device, xthe liquid is drained oil and air forced through the pipes 77 and 79, thus causing it to pass through the device in opposite directions, all'of the valves being closed with the exception of valves 78, 86, 82 and 85.
It will thus be seen that by means of my device, the dye liquid is thoroughly mixed in the reservetank and is introduced into the receptacle through the perforated pipes 39 and i0 equally along twosi'des or the receptacle from which while being continuously mixed by bail'le plates and toraminous members is introduced into the dyeing chamber for purposes of dyeing. By these means a uniform even treatment of the fiber is caused, resulting in even and uniform dyeings. V
I do not limit myself to the particular size, shape, number or arrangement of parts as described and shown, all of which may be varied without going beyond the scope of my invention as described, shown and claimed.
