Description

M. FELDINE.
WATERPROOF MAGNETO CONSTRUCTION.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 1a, 1918.
Patented Nov. 9, 1920.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHEL FELDINE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WATERPROOF MAGNETO CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed April 16,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MIC EL FELDINI}, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVaterproof Magneto Construction; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to magneto construction, and it has for an object to provide a construction in which certain of the operative parts are inclosed within a moisture and dust proof chamber.
A further object is the provision of a protecting hood which is detachably carried by the magneto and yieldable means for retaining this hood in place.
Further objects will be apparent from the following specification, appended claims and drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sec tional View through the device showing the parts in elevation,
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view showing parts in elevation, and
Fig. 3 is a Vertical cross sectional view.-
Referring to the drawings, in which the several parts are clearly shown, 10 indicates a base to which the magnets 11 are attached as by the screws 12. The distributer housing is shown at 13 and the contact breaker box at 14. The housing for the armature and pole pieces has its top face plane as shown at 15, and the rear wall of the plate supporting the distributer housing has its face plane as shown at 16 so that a portion of these faces 15 and 16 may be used in the formation of a sea]. for the prevention of the entrance of dust, and moisture into the chamber included between the bight of the magnets and the armature housing.
A hood 17 is slidable in the space between the armature housing and the bight of the magnets and this hood is provided with a visual opening 18 and an oil duct 19 which leads to one of the bearings of the armature shaft. The bottom edges of the walls of this hood are faced so that a snug fit will be had with the plane face 15 and the ends of the walls about the open ends of the hood are of increased thickness as at 20 to permit the formation of a recess 21 in which sealing Specification of Letters Patent.
1918. Serial No. 228,986.
element 22, such as felt or other desirable packing is placed. When properly placed, this sealing strip contacts with the face 16 to form an effective seal between. the hood 17 and face 16. The top of the hood is provided with a depressed portion 23, in which a spring 24 is secured and this spring is so positioned as to exert its action against the magnet and thereby depress the lower edges of the hood against the face 15.
A U-shaped spring 25 is secured within the hood at the closed end, and this spring is disposed to engage a post 26 forming one of the terminals or connections in the magneto construction. I
It is evident that when the hood is slipped within the opening between the face 15 and the bight of the magnets, the spring 24 serves to maintain an effective seal between the lower edges of this hood and the face 15 and the spring 25 holds this hood against longitudinal movement to maintain the seal between the packing 22 and face 16. Therefore, moisture and dust cannot enter the chamber formed by this hood to interfere with the operation of the included operative parts.
Having thus described this invention, I claim:
1. In combination with a magneto, of a substantially three sided hood one side of which is adapted to slidingly seat upon the magneto, and means for yieldingly holding the hood against its seat as said hood is slid to or from place.
2. In combination with a magneto, of a substantially three sided hood one side of which is adapted to slidingly seat upon the magneto, means for yieldingly holding the hood against its seat as said hood is slid to or from place, and means for releasably holding the hood in place.
3. In a magneto having a secondary conducting element including a terminal post, a hood for said element, and a spring clamp for said hood having fingers adapted to engage upon opposite sides of the post for securing the hood in lace.
4;. In a magneto, a ood having open end face and an open bottom face, said open faces having engagement with parts of a magneto construction, and yieldable means for maintaining one of said faces in engagement while the other face is brought into engagement.
5. A magneto including a field magnet, an

zn'inutui'e housing, and an end wall, in combination, with a hood slidably mounted on said armature housing; Within said magnets, said hood having its edges provided with a sealing element for Contact with said end Wall.
6. A magneto including 21v field magnet, an
armature housing and an end Wall, in combination with a hood having its bottom edges faced to engage said armature hous- 10 ing, and having its end edges recessed to receive a sealing element for Contact with said end wall, and yieldable ineinbei's 01" in1parting downward and one way longitudinal movement to said hood.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature MICHEL FELDINE.
