FAN CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2, 1920.
Application filed December 23, 1919. Serial No. 346,817.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, DORsAY MCCALL Wnrrn, a subject of the Kingdom of Great Britain, and a resident of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Fan Construction and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
The object of this invention is to provide in a fan construction a flexible driving connection, whereby a certain amount of cushioning effect is given to the fan at the same time embodying with this resilient feature a design of but few and compactly arranged )arts. l The full. nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.
In the drawings, which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a front clevational view of the improved fan construction with the dust -.cap and securing nut therefor removed. Fig. 2 is a central cross sectional view of the same showing detailsv of the mounting. Fig. 3 is the same as Fig. 1 showing the modified form of fan con struction.
In the drawings 11 indicates a spindle or shaft upon which the fan structure is mounted and by which the same is driven. A collar 12, either integral therewith or rigidly secured thereto, provides an abutment for a bushing 13 rotatably mounted on the shaft or spindle 11, the same having an outwardly extending annular projection or circumferential flange 14, the same limiting longitudinal movement of the fan hub 15 rotatably mounted on the bushing 13. The fan hub 15 has an outwardly and circumferentially extending plate portion 16 to which are secured in any suitable manner fan blades 17. Herein the fan blades 17 are shown formed from a fan plate 18, the same being seatable in an annular slot 19 formed in the plate 16. As shown in the drawings shaft 11, bushing 13, hub 15 and plate 18 are so positioned that the faces thereof lie in substantially the same plane transverse to the shaft.
The shaft 11 has a forwardly extending portion 20 upon which is rigidly secured, by
being keyed or otherwise mounted, a spider or hub 21, the same having radiating driving arms or forks 22. Herein the fan construction is shown comprising four fan blades in spaced relation with each other and the driving spider provided with four driving arms or forks, the same being in spaced relation with each other and each fork being adapted to be positioned midway between two of the fan blades, as shown in Fig. 1. Means herein shown for transmitting power from the driving arm 22 to the fan blade comprises a driving block 23, the same being riveted to the hub plate 16. Herein the securing means is shown comprising a rivet extending through the driving block, which not only secures the same to the hub plate, but also secures the fan plate or the individual fan blades to the hub plate. The driving blocks 23 are shown formed upon an annular securing ring 241 and project inwardly from the same. Each driving arm or fork 22 carries a driving projection 25. Between each of the projections 24 and 23 is positioned a spring member 26, the same transmitting power from the member 25 to the member 23 for driving the fan.
A dust cap 27 having an inwardly extending flange portion 28 concentric with the shaft is adapted to be slipped over said forwardly projecting portion of the shaft and about said annular member 24, so that the driving casing is entirely inclosed by the hub plate 16, dust cap 27 and the annular member 24-. From the foregoing it will be understood that the springs 26 are retained in position by the dust cap secured to the spider, as shown.
Means for securing all of these members upon the shaft 11 comprises a threaded poi tion 29 of the shaft and a suitable nut 30 locked thereon by any suitable means, such as a pin 31.
In the modified form shown in Fig.3 there is shown only one spring 126 between the arms 22 and the driving blocks 23. However, this construction only absorbs the shock due to the sudden stopping of the fan during its rotation in the direction of the arrow.
The invention claimed is:
1. In a fan construction the combination of a driving shaft, a hub and plate member rotatably mounted on said shaft and carrylit) ing a plurality of fan blades, a plurality of driving projections extending axially of the plate and supported thereby a spider secured to said shaft adjacent said hub and provided with a driving arm said arm ere tending outwardly and radially intermediate said driving projections, and cushioning means interposed between said radial arm and said driving connections for yield ingly rotating said fan blades and providing a resilient driving connection therefor,
2. in a tan construction the combination of a driving shalt, a hub and plate member rotatably supported upon said shalt and adapted to carry a plurality or fan blades, a plurality of driving projections in spaced relation with each other and carried by said plate member and extending axially thereof a spider rigid with said shaft adjacent said plate member and provided with a plurality of arms in spaced relation with each other and extending" radially between said driving "projections, and resilient means interposed between said driving arms and said projections to provide a resilient driving connection therebetween for rotating said hub member 3. in a tan construction the combination of a driving shaft, a plate member rotatably mounted thereon, an annular member secured to said plate member, a plurality of fan blades rotatable with said rotatable member, inwardly and radially extending projections on said annular member, a spider secured upon said shaft provided with a similar number of outwardly and radially extending driving arms one of said arms being interposed between two of said projections, flexible means between said arms and said projections for yieldingly drivin the tan, and a cap mounted upon said shatt for forming a housing to inclose said driving connections,
